Hashirama-cell and Sharingan augmentation 132 Appears heavily bandaged after receiving Hashirama Cells and implanted Sharingan. His later-exposed artificial arm contains more than a dozen stolen eyes; the First Hokage’s cells allow his body to withstand their drain 259.

Background / History

Danzo trained under Senju Tobirama, the Second Hokage, and served among his guards alongside Hiruzen Sarutobi, Koharu Utatane, Homura Mitokado, and Kagami Uchiha. Tobirama remained behind to fight pursuing Kumogakure ninja and cover their retreat. Danzo later became Root’s leader, while Hiruzen became Hokage and Koharu and Homura became senior advisers 35 253.

Before Minato Namikaze’s appointment, Danzo intended to place Orochimaru in power and rule the village from the shadows. Hiruzen’s selection of Minato frustrated that arrangement. Danzo’s dissatisfaction with Hiruzen became increasingly open after Minato’s death and Hiruzen’s return to office 86 129.

Danzo maintained a covert partnership with Orochimaru, supplying experimental subjects and resources in exchange for research and bodily modifications. Their cooperation was transactional: Orochimaru knowingly accepted being used because the arrangement supported his forbidden experiments 31 131 283.

Appearance

  • Heavy bandaging: Following his augmentation, Danzo appears extensively wrapped in bandages. Other Academy observers interpret this as evidence of serious mission injuries, while Sasuke recognizes the concealed transplants 132.
  • Artificial arm: Beneath the bandages is a pale prosthetic arm made with First Hokage Cells and implanted with numerous Sharingan 259.
  • Left-eye injury: Shisui stabs Danzo’s left eye with a kunai during their forest confrontation 65.
  • Body seal: The Reverse Four Symbols Sealing Technique is inscribed beneath his clothing and exposed when he tears it open 286 287.

Personality

Danzo regards coercion and ruthless control as necessary to protect Konoha. He condemns Hiruzen’s compromises and the clans’ competing interests, claiming that they have weakened the village. Even after confessing to plans to murder Konoha shinobi and manufacture a factional conflict, he insists that he has done nothing wrong 259 260.

His hostility toward the Uchiha combines prejudice with a desire to acquire their abilities. He describes their bloodline as inherently evil, considers erasing the clan from the village’s records, and seeks their Sharingan for his own use. Nevertheless, he avoids directly confronting the clan at its strongest and fears Shisui’s Kotoamatsukami 35 128 199.

Danzo habitually denies responsibility, demands evidence, and exploits gaps between covert operations and official records. When challenged over an attack on Academy children, he claims that Root was conducting a rescue and that the testimony may have been altered by genjutsu. He also uses shared secrets to threaten Hiruzen into backing down 55 259.

His alliances last only while they remain useful. He arranges Koharu’s death after she helps facilitate his return to Konoha, then promises to commemorate her as a village hero. During his final battle, his priority shifts from victory to escape; when escape becomes impossible, he threatens to take his opponents with him 281 284 287.

Abilities & Skills

Wind Release

  • Uses Vacuum Sphere and Wind Style: Shuriken while joining Root’s attack on Shisui 64.
  • Great Vacuum Sphere destroys Shisui’s Body Flicker afterimages across the forest 65.
  • Exchanges powerful Wind Release techniques with Hiruzen during their final battle 285.
  • His Great Vacuum Sphere is cleaved apart by Kagami Uchiha, preventing it from creating an opening for escape 284.

Implanted Sharingan and Izanagi

  • Uses stolen Sharingan to activate Izanagi, surviving Shisui’s sword through his chest and reappearing unharmed nearby 259.
  • Repeatedly survives lethal attacks from Kagami Uchiha and Susanoo-no-Mikoto 285 287.
  • Each use sacrifices an eye and consumes considerable chakra. Repeated activation leaves him sweating and breathing heavily 285.
  • Can combine Izanagi with the Reverse Four Symbols Sealing Technique, reappearing after sealing his previous body 286.
  • His available revivals are finite: only two Sharingan remain at the beginning of his last stand 287.

Hashirama-Cell Prosthesis

  • His artificial arm is created from First Hokage Cells and carries more than a dozen Sharingan 259.
  • The cells enable his body to withstand the implanted eyes’ drain 259.
  • He considers testing the arm’s power against strong Uchiha, but rules out Shisui because of Kotoamatsukami 199.
  • Exposing the arm reveals the theft of Uchiha eyes and destroys his ability to conceal the crime 259.

Reverse Four Symbols Sealing Technique

  • Releases streams of blood and creates a powerful suction effect within a sealed zone that isolates space 286.
  • Envelops the Reaper Phantom’s arms, interrupting its hold on him; Izanagi subsequently allows him to reappear 286.
  • Uses the technique again during the confrontation involving Hiruzen and the Reaper Phantom 286.
  • Threatens to activate it as a final mutual-destruction attack. Kagami’s Shadow Clones make that threat ineffective by occupying him without providing worthwhile targets 287.

Summoning and Weapon Techniques

  • Baku: Summons the beast during his attempt to escape the Sannin and Hiruzen 284.
  • Shuriken Shadow Clone Technique: Multiplies thrown shuriken into a large barrage against Kagami 285.
  • Body Flicker: Uses the technique to rush to Root’s destroyed underground headquarters 133.
  • Silently defeats the weakened Anbu guards at the Hokage Office window during his return to Konoha 282.

Root Command and Covert Operations

  • Directs surveillance, abductions, recruitment, and assassination operations through Root 22 31 132 258.
  • Uses cursed seals to compel operatives to obey. After the seals are removed, Shisui argues that the former members should regain their status as ordinary Konoha ninja 97.
  • Exploits Root’s arrest authority to label Shisui a traitor and authorize killing him if he resists 64 65.
  • Manipulates public opinion and bribes clans to support political proposals 78 81 237 245.
  • His detailed knowledge of Konoha’s security and secrets makes him a particularly dangerous enemy after his defection 261 284.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Shuriken: Used with the Shuriken Shadow Clone Technique 285.
  • Explosive tags: Hidden around the Hokage Office and detonated to create cover for his escape 260.
  • Bandages: Conceal his Sharingan transplants and artificial arm 132 137 259.
  • Operational scrolls: Used to issue instructions and trigger prepared phases of his schemes 83 128.

Relationships

  • Hiruzen Sarutobi — Former teammate, political partner, and eventual enemy. Their shared secrets repeatedly shield Danzo from punishment, but Hiruzen ultimately turns against him and attempts to seal him 35 55 259 285.
  • Orochimaru — Research partner whom Danzo finances with subjects and resources. Orochimaru abandons him when Wutong exposes their conspiracy and later joins the attack against him 31 131 258 283.
  • Sasuke Uchiha — Abduction target and persistent opponent. Danzo agrees to exchange him for experimental cells; Sasuke later undermines his reputation, exposes Root’s experiments, and advocates eliminating him 31 95 133 137.
  • Shisui Uchiha — Targeted for his eyes. Shisui injures Danzo during an ambush and later exposes his implanted Sharingan by forcing him to use Izanagi 65 259.
  • Fugaku Uchiha — Political and military adversary. Fugaku challenges Danzo’s accusations, counters his schemes, and prepares a secret operation against Root 43 128 232.
  • Obito Uchiha — Temporary collaborator operating as the Masked Man. Their alliance is mutually distrustful; Obito kills Koharu during their joint operation but abandons Danzo before his last stand 185 281 287.
  • Tsunade — Open opponent who destroys Root’s compound, publicly condemns Danzo, and orders Jiraiya to kill him. She later offers imprisonment instead of execution in accordance with Hiruzen’s final wishes 252 253 260 287.
  • Koharu Utatane — Former teammate and later intermediary in the succession conspiracy. Danzo betrays her once she has facilitated his return, allowing Obito to kill her 35 275 281.
  • Kagami Uchiha — Former teammate whose return terrifies him. Kagami repeatedly defeats his Izanagi-enabled revivals and helps create the opening for his death 284 285 287.
  • Wutong — Collaborator who defects after witnessing the conspiracy’s casualties. His evidence exposes Danzo’s assassination plan against Asuma and Team 7 258.
  • Dark Owl — Devoted Root follower who defects with Danzo and attacks Konoha’s sentries during his return operation 280.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Early Conflict over the Uchiha

Sasuke’s friendship with Naruto and promotion of the Will of Fire alarm Danzo because both the Uchiha and the Nine-Tails jinchūriki are essential to his plans. Hiruzen responds by protecting Shisui from Root interference. When Root later approaches the Uchiha compound, Anbu intercepts and injures its operatives, revealing a split between the two organizations 22 35.

Danzo agrees to deliver Sasuke to Orochimaru in exchange for viable experimental cells and orders three operatives to abduct him discreetly. After four Root members die inside the Uchiha compound, he accuses Sasuke and Shisui. Hiruzen’s demand for evidence and Fugaku’s questions force him to withdraw the accusation and suggest an unknown enemy instead 31 43.

A subsequent attack on Academy children again implicates Root. Danzo denies involvement and reminds Hiruzen that he previously allowed Orochimaru to escape. The veiled threat prevents direct punishment; Hiruzen instead orders him to stop creating trouble 55.

Ambush on Shisui

Danzo attempts to arrest Shisui under Root’s authority, then declares him a traitor who has colluded with outsiders. Shisui fights through the encirclement, stabs Danzo’s left eye, and flees toward Konoha. Danzo orders pursuit, determined to prevent him from returning 64 65.

When Itachi and Sasuke reach Shisui, Danzo treats their arrival as an additional opportunity. He leaves Shisui to himself while Orochimaru attacks the brothers. The confrontation expands to include Akatsuki enemies and responding Uchiha forces 65 67.

Public-Opinion Schemes and Root’s Decline

After another plan fails, Danzo commissions Orochimaru to modify six subjects with cursed seals and experimental materials. He also orchestrates praise of the Uchiha and Hiruzen as part of a larger scheme. The Uchiha uncover his involvement and report mysterious Sharingan users near the village 78 81.

Despite being confined, Danzo continues issuing orders through Root. Sharingan-equipped attackers subsequently cause disturbances inside Konoha; Hiruzen and the Uchiha suppress the unrest, capturing thirty-two people and executing six transplanted-eye users 83 87 89.

Sasuke redirects public attention by carving Danzo’s face above Hiruzen’s on Hokage Rock. Danzo attempts to exploit the incident to demand nomination as Fifth Hokage, but Hiruzen refuses. After former Root members are freed from their cursed seals and absorbed under Hiruzen’s authority, Danzo leaves a private meeting visibly defeated and reportedly removes the carving himself 93 94 95 97 103.

Hiruzen later permits him to take Root personnel back, but prohibits further cursed seals because Itachi has been credited with discovering how to break them 104.

Daimyo Plot and Bodily Augmentation

Danzo prepares to disrupt the Daimyo’s visit and publicly expose Hiruzen’s alleged wrongdoing. Uchiha intervention defeats the operation, leaving the speech undisturbed and strengthening the clan’s standing 118 124 128.

He subsequently appears at the Academy with Hashirama Cells and implanted Sharingan, taking several twelve-year-old boys away. Sasuke recognizes the new threat and destroys Root’s underground base. The ruins expose prohibited human experimentation, forcing Danzo to dismantle the facility and relocate Root above ground 132 133.

Rebuilding Influence

Hiruzen refuses Danzo’s request to place rescued children in Root, assigning them to the Uchiha instead. Separately, Uchiha pressure forces the Masked Man’s organization to suspend cooperation with Danzo, prompting him to seek greater reliance on Orochimaru’s research 174 185.

Danzo later supports admitting Land of the Moon ninja into Konoha and bribes clans to back his proposal. Root’s undocumented nighttime activities draw further scrutiny, and Shisui privately informs Hiruzen that interrogations have revealed Orochimaru’s name 237 245 247.

Tsunade destroys Root’s compound and publicly rebukes Danzo for abandoning Tobirama’s example. With Jiraiya present, Danzo does not dare retaliate directly 252 253.

Exposure and Defection

Wutong reveals Danzo’s assassination scheme against Asuma’s team and Team 7. Once confronted, Danzo initially denies responsibility. Shisui’s attack forces him to use Izanagi and exposes his arm full of stolen Sharingan 258 259.

Danzo then admits his intended alternatives: kill Asuma and blame the Uchiha, or kill Sasuke and blame Asuma. He rejects Hiruzen’s offer to surrender and relinquish his positions, instead denouncing the Hokage and Konoha’s clans 259.

After Jiraiya attacks and Fugaku blocks his escape with Susanoo, Danzo detonates hidden explosive tags. He disappears through an unidentified space-time technique. Hiruzen declares him a missing-nin, issues an S-rank pursuit mission, and disavows his future actions 260 261.

Return to Konoha

During the approaching Hokage succession, Koharu proposes contacting Danzo to help preserve the old leadership’s influence. Danzo instead uses the opportunity for his own operation: former Root members attack Konoha’s sentries, while hired assassins target Sasuke 275 280 282.

Danzo betrays Koharu, who is killed by Obito, and enters the Hokage Office alone after silently defeating its weakened guards. His unexpected arrival reveals that he is no longer following Hiruzen’s agreed plan 281 282.

Orochimaru, Jiraiya, and Tsunade pursue him. Hiruzen abandons the conspiracy, supports Tsunade’s succession, and joins the battle against his former comrade 283 284.

Final Battle and Death

Kagami Uchiha intercepts Danzo’s escape attempt and repeatedly kills him, forcing him to expend Sharingan through Izanagi. Danzo then battles Hiruzen until Obito ambushes the Hokage. Hiruzen responds by binding Obito and seizing Danzo’s soul with the Reaper Death Seal 284 285.

Danzo combines the Reverse Four Symbols Sealing Technique with Izanagi to survive. Susanoo-no-Mikoto enters the battle and inflicts further lethal injuries, while Obito eventually escapes and leaves Danzo behind 286 287.

With only two Sharingan remaining, Danzo rejects another offer of imprisonment and threatens to seal his opponents with him. Kagami’s Shadow Clones occupy him, allowing Susanoo-no-Mikoto to strike. His remaining revivals are overcome, and he dies during the confrontation 287.
