Background / History

Tang San places unwavering faith in Yu Xiaogang after Lin Hui publicly challenges the teacher's martial-soul theories. He regards Yu Xiaogang as a father figure and vows to surpass Lin Hui in order to vindicate both himself and his teacher. 2

After confronting Lin Hui over his treatment of Yu Xiaogang, Tang San develops murderous intent and conceals a Sleeve Arrow in his sleeve. He then challenges Lin Hui to a duel, pledging to fulfill one request if he loses, provided it does not violate his moral principles. 6 7

Yu Xiaogang takes Tang San to the Soul Hunting Forest, where Tang San helps kill a Datura Snake using his hidden weapons and Tang Sect techniques. He absorbs its approximately four-hundred-year soul ring, advancing to level eleven and gaining the Blue Silver Grass skill Bind. 8 14

During the Notting Academy Grand Competition, Tang San defeats several classmates with excessive force, leaving students fearful of facing him. His match against Lin Hui ends in a crushing defeat when Lin Hui's Blue Silver Emperor suppresses Tang San's Blue Silver Grass; Tang San is left unconscious with broken ribs and extensive injuries. He ultimately places fourth. 12 15 16 19

Despite humiliation and doubts about his first soul skill, Tang San continues to trust Yu Xiaogang's promise that a second soul ring will allow him to defeat Lin Hui. After Xiao Wu leaves Notting with Lin Hui, Tang San resolves to attend Shrek Academy, become stronger, and take her back. 19 25

Personality

Tang San is intensely loyal to Yu Xiaogang, accepting his teacher's authority even when other students question it. He frames his loyalty through the belief that “a teacher for a day is a father for life,” and treats defeating Lin Hui as a way to prove his master correct. 2

He is highly prideful and competitive, particularly where Xiao Wu and Lin Hui are concerned. His jealousy over Xiao Wu's growing closeness with Lin Hui drives increasingly ruthless conduct in the Academy Grand Competition and later fuels his determination to reclaim her. 12 13 25

Tang San also adheres strongly to promises and personal honor. Though devastated by the consequence of his duel pact, he fulfills Lin Hui's demand rather than break his word. 22 23
