Background / History
Muzan's conflict with Hundred Eyes dates back a thousand years. Hundred Eyes challenged him in pursuit of martial perfection and broke free of his control. Because the rebellious demon could self-destruct to escape death, Muzan suppressed and sealed it rather than killing it 60.
Centuries before the main conflict, Yoriichi Tsugikuni inflicted a lasting psychological wound on Muzan. Muzan survived their encounter by exploding into 1,800 pieces. Thereafter, alongside his search for the Blue Spider Lily, he hunted people connected to Yoriichi and inheritors of Sun Breathing—a campaign known to Kokushibo 133 245.
Muzan also forcibly transformed the martial artist Hakuji after learning that he had massacred the dojo responsible for poisoning his loved ones. He erased Hakuji's memories, creating Akaza and leaving him with an overwhelming drive to become stronger 60 258.
Muzan and the Ubuyashiki family share a common origin. Kagaya identifies him as the source of the family's curse, but Muzan rejects responsibility for their suffering 245.
Appearance
Muzan initially appears as a tall young man in a clean, neatly fitted suit, conspicuously out of place in a filthy slum alley. His skin is paper-pale, and his crimson eyes convey a bloodthirsty brutality 50.
- Male presentation: A youthful face, pale skin, crimson eyes, and formal clothing 50.
- Female presentation: Appears before the assembled Kizuki in a woman's kimono and later presides over the remaining Upper Ranks while dressed as a woman 124 239.
- Resemblance to Kagaya: Their faces are described as approximately eighty percent similar 245.
- Poison-induced aging: His hair turns white, purple blood vessels rise beneath his skin, and his initially youthful face eventually develops wrinkles and age spots 258 259 260.
Personality
Muzan treats human life as disposable and regards himself as an immortal king approaching perfection. His ambition is personal rather than collective: he wants to overcome sunlight, and he dismisses both the Ubuyashiki curse and the people he has killed as irrelevant to that goal 245.
His authority rests on fear, punishment, and selective favoritism. He kills unsuccessful subordinates, abolishes the Lower Ranks, and denies Enmu the death he desires. In contrast, he treats Rui more gently and gives him additional blood and power 124 186.
Despite his claims of invincibility, Muzan is deeply afraid of death. Hiruma's resemblance to Yoriichi repeatedly makes him consider fleeing, while taunts about his past escape provoke explosive anger. As defeat approaches, his contempt gives way to frantic denial and terror 136 245 260.
He can nevertheless act cautiously and patiently. He avoids advancing into a courtyard that might contain traps and restrains the Upper Ranks while Nakime searches for the Corps headquarters 239 245.
Abilities & Skills
Demonic Blood and Subordinate Control
Muzan's blood creates and strengthens demons while providing a means of control and information exchange 124 133 258.
- Transformation: Turns humans into demons, including Hakuji, whose memories he subsequently erases 258.
- Empowerment: Injects Rui with a large quantity of blood through a thin whip, substantially increasing his power 124.
- Information transfer: Obtains a target's location from Kokushibo through demon blood 133.
- Inherited fear: Muzan's fear of Yoriichi and the Crimson Blade manifests in demons carrying his blood 116.
- Lethal blood: Hiruma considers Muzan's blood more dangerous than the physical force of his attacks because it can destroy his cells 136.
- Limits of control: Hundred Eyes breaks free of his control, and Nezuko is likewise recognized as a demon outside it 60 143.
Regeneration and Survival
Muzan possesses regeneration far beyond that of ordinary Upper Ranks. His body contains five brains and seven hearts, making conventional killing methods inadequate 187 259.
- Recovery from decapitation: Regrows his head within one second during the final battle and survives at least ten beheadings 259.
- Crimson Blade resistance: In the final encirclement, Crimson Blades cause burning pain but fail to suppress his regeneration 259.
- Survival through fragmentation: Escaped Yoriichi by splitting into 1,800 pieces; Tamayo later develops an anti-splitting drug effect specifically to prevent a repeat 245 246.
- Sunlight vulnerability: His central weakness and the reason the Demon Slayers repeatedly aim to hold him until dawn 50 137 259.
Blood Whips and Physical Combat
Muzan reshapes his flesh into a nineteen-weapon array: nine upper-body blood whips, eight emerging from his legs, and two bone-spurred arm whips 136 137.
- Leg whips: His fastest attack method, exceeding the speed of his upper-body and arm weapons 136.
- Multidirectional coverage: Uses seventeen whips to form a dense attack net around Hiruma 246.
- Overwhelming strength: Sends Hiruma crashing through several thick trees with a charged strike 136.
- Reserves of power: Uses only sixty to seventy percent of his strength during the initial battle against the assembled Hashira 138.
Clones and Mass-Produced Demons
Muzan creates expendable combatants to attack Corps targets without relying solely on the surviving Kizuki 218 228 239.
- Mass-produced army: Produces black demons with strength equivalent to Lower Ranks; Dōkū deploys them to test the Corps' defenses 218.
- Swordsmith Village clone: Creates a combatant from one arm and gives it two orders: kill the village's swordsmiths and every Demon Hunter in sight 228 229.
- Clone design: The village attacker has blood-red armor, six pale arms, and scarlet eyes. Muzan leaves no consciousness of his own within it 229.
- Combat applications: Four arms restrain Tanjiro, Genya, and Mitsuri while the remaining two fire energy blasts toward the evacuation route 229.
- Durability: Continues recovering after repeated decapitations; the fourth beheading immobilizes it for only five minutes 234.
- Limitation: Its body dissipates in sunlight, although it attempts one final attack while disappearing 235.
Sealing Techniques
Muzan devises a sealing-type Blood Demon Art to remove the Corps' strongest fighter and turn him into bait for a rescue operation 181.
- Heart of Sealing: Entrusted to Dōkū as part of the plan to trap Hiruma and draw out other Hashira 181.
- Stored power: A heart used in Rui's Blood Spider Domain contains a portion of Muzan's power 186.
- Enhanced regeneration: The blood crystal protecting Rui regenerates at Muzan's speed, overwhelming the attacking Hashira's ability to damage it 187.
Black Blood Thorns
Muzan compresses blood inside his body and ejects it through his pores as rapidly rotating, barbed thorns 259.
- Area attack: Its first final-battle use destroys buildings within a hundred-meter radius and leaves a large crater 259.
- Multiple targets: Sends twisting thorns toward the surrounding Demon Slayers before attempting to escape 260.
- Counter: Hiruma's white flames reduce the thorns to dust 260.
- Cost under poisoning: The initial release accelerates Muzan's aging by another four thousand years 259.
Paradise of the Dead
Paradise of the Dead disrupts the entire nervous system, causing convulsions and preventing victims from moving 260.
- Peak lethality: The narration states that an unweakened use would have annihilated everyone present, even leaving Yoriichi powerless 260.
- Heavy expenditure: Consumes enough power to prevent another full-scale use in quick succession 260.
- Emergency escape: Muzan drains his body to release a second version covering only a few dozen centimeters 260.
- Limited effect on Hiruma: Causes bleeding from Hiruma's seven orifices without immobilizing him, but buys Muzan a few tenths of a second to flee 260.
Weaknesses & Countermeasures
| Countermeasure | Effect |
|---|---|
| Sunlight | Remains the decisive threat to Muzan's survival and the focus of the Corps' stalling tactics 50 259. |
| Yoriichi-related imagery | Hiruma's red ponytail, sun earrings, and deliberately chosen clothing provoke fear and destabilize Muzan 136 245. |
| Human-transformation component | Forces Muzan to devote time and effort to resisting Tamayo's drug; it does not successfully return him to humanity 246. |
| Accelerated aging | Ages him by fifty years per minute. He has aged over six thousand years after roughly two hours, with the effect still continuing 246 258. |
| Anti-splitting component | Prevents the fragmentation escape that allowed him to survive Yoriichi 246. |
| Cell destruction | Uses concentrated Wisteria Poison tailored to Muzan's enormous body 246. |
| Coordinated encirclement | Multiple fighters repeatedly pin him down and decapitate him while waiting for dawn 259. |
Relationships
- Tendo Hiruma — Principal adversary. Muzan marks him for death, while Hiruma exploits his fear of Yoriichi and organizes resistance against him 124 130 245.
- Yoriichi Tsugikuni — Long-dead enemy whose attack shapes Muzan's fears, escape precautions, and persecution of Sun Breathing inheritors 133 245 246.
- Ubuyashiki Kagaya — Opposing leader who shares Muzan's origin and holds him responsible for the Ubuyashiki curse 245.
- Kokushibo — Trusted Upper Rank One subordinate who shares knowledge of Muzan's campaign against Yoriichi's connections and supplies target information 133.
- Hundred Eyes — Rebellious subordinate whom Muzan cannot reliably control or kill. Its intervention later allows Hiruma to escape Muzan 60 139.
- Rui — Favored subordinate whom Muzan strengthens with additional blood and grants access to a portion of his power 124 186.
- Tamayo — Pursued enemy and the creator of the four-effect drug that critically weakens Muzan 103 246.
- Yushiro — Enemy whose hatred of Muzan is rooted in his persecution of Tamayo 62.
- Nezuko Kamado — Victim of his attack and later his preferred means of overcoming sunlight; he seeks to capture and devour her 136 137 239.
- Tanjiro Kamado — Enemy who fights to protect Nezuko and ultimately defeats Muzan 136 260.
- Akaza / Hakuji — Subordinate whom Muzan forcibly transforms and deprives of his human memories 258.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Shinazugawa Household Incident
- Muzan appears in the slums and confronts Genya Shinazugawa. The encounter leads to a demonic transformation and an attack on the Shinazugawa household, prompting Hiruma to arrange the family's relocation and Sanemi's training 50 51.
Reorganization of the Twelve Kizuki
- After Doma and Hantengu die, Muzan confronts the assembled Kizuki, abolishes the Lower Ranks, kills Rokuro and Natagumo, strengthens Rui, and orders demons to kill Hiruma 123 124.
- Removing the Lower Rank designations makes powerful unnumbered demons harder to identify, increasing the Corps' workload and the risk of misjudging threats 133 159.
Attack on the Kamado Residence
- Muzan personally pursues a Sun Breathing-related target and attacks the Kamado home, where Hiruma is waiting to protect the family 133 135 136.
- He overwhelms Hiruma, captures Nezuko, and causes her transformation into a demon. Marked Hashira arrive but cannot secure a kill 136 137.
- Hundred Eyes blocks Muzan's attack, allowing Hiruma and his companions to withdraw as dawn approaches 138 139.
Attacks on Corps Resources
- Muzan develops the sealing plan against Hiruma, supplies power to Rui's domain, and produces Lower Rank-equivalent demons for Dōkū's assault on a district 181 186 218.
- His six-armed clone attacks Swordsmith Village while Hundred Eyes occupies Hiruma. Tanjiro's group holds the clone off through repeated decapitations until sunrise 228 229 234 235.
Pursuit of Nezuko
- After witnessing Nezuko overcome sunlight, Muzan considers devouring her more promising than finding the Blue Spider Lily 239.
- He orders the remaining Upper Ranks to stay inside Infinity Castle and locate the Corps headquarters. Demon attacks disappear from the intelligence network over the following month 239.
Final Battle
- Muzan reaches the Corps headquarters, where Hiruma and Kagaya confront him. Hiruma detonates a trap using Nezuko's blood, severely injuring Muzan and destroying the headquarters 245.
- Tamayo injects her specially prepared drug during the ensuing fight. Muzan retreats into Infinity Castle, drawing fifteen Hashira inside 246 247.
- While Muzan attempts to detoxify in a flesh cocoon, the Corps defeats his Upper Ranks. Yushiro's control of Nakime deprives him of Infinity Castle, forcing him to emerge prematurely 258.
- The Demon Slayers repeatedly behead and surround him. Muzan uses Black Blood Thorns and Paradise of the Dead, then makes a desperate escape attempt 259 260.
- Tanjiro attains the Transparent World and defeats Muzan with the support of his comrades' and mentors' spirits. Six months later, the Demon Slayer Corps disbands 260.
