Background / History

Mount Peach upbringing

Twelve years before the opening of the story, Kuwajima Jigoro found Hiruma as an infant at the foot of Mount Peach and raised him as his disciple. An otherworldly soul resides in Hiruma's body, while Jigoro recognizes his frightening natural talent for swordsmanship and perception. 1

Hiruma grows up treating Jigoro as a grandfather despite constantly evading drills, using tricks such as a moving scarecrow to fake his sword practice, and blackmailing Jigoro with gossip. Jigoro's harsh chases and punishments are nevertheless structured training intended to sharpen Hiruma's reactions. 1

Early demon slaying

While returning from Mount Peach Town, Hiruma is stalked and poisoned by a demon attracted to his Rare Blood. He feigns incapacitation, recovers from the poison, and decapitates it with a broken kitchen knife—his first documented demonstration of both his regenerative abilities and his willingness to bait enemies into mistakes. 3

Seeking real combat rather than training alone, Hiruma accompanies Rengoku Shinjuro on the Hachijojima Island mission with Jigoro's permission and a Nichirin Blade. 5

Demon Slayer Corps career

Hiruma helps bring several future Demon Slayers into the Corps' orbit, including Iguro Obanai and the Kocho sisters. He also advises Shinobu to develop a thrusting, poison-based fighting style rather than relying on decapitation. 7 15 24

During Final Selection, he kills thirty demons and deliberately allows Sabito to resolve his confrontation with the Hand Demon, intervening only to heal Giyu and prevent the demon's escape. 30 66

Personality

Hiruma is carefree, lazy, and openly mischievous outside combat. He dodges training, exaggerates injuries for sympathy, and habitually needles the people closest to him, especially Jigoro and Obanai. Beneath the antics, he is deeply attached to his Mount Peach home and instinctively calls Jigoro “Grandpa” when it matters. 1 37

He is confident to the point of arrogance about his talent, but his confidence is backed by an intense desire to improve through real combat. Kagaya's empathy helps Hiruma recognize that his deeper goal is to protect those around him and change the tragedies he expects to happen. 5 19
