Background / History

Sanemi was raised as the eldest child of the Shinazugawa family in the Kyōbashi Ward slums. His alcoholic, gambling father repeatedly abused his wife and children and nearly sold one of Sanemi’s sisters. Sanemi and his younger brother Genya eventually drove him away, sustaining injuries while protecting the family. Despite their poverty, Sanemi hoped that he and Genya could provide a better life for their mother and siblings. 48

When Hiruma investigated the Shinazugawa family, Sanemi mistook him for a debt collector threatening his siblings and attacked him. Hiruma’s generosity toward the family gradually challenged Sanemi’s distrust of strangers. After Muzan transformed Sanemi’s father into the demon Dōkū, Sanemi resolved to enter the Demon Slayer Corps to protect his family; Hiruma arranged both their relocation to Corps headquarters and Sanemi’s Wind Breathing training. 49 50 51

Sanemi is volatile, blunt, and quick to violence, particularly when demons or threats to his family are involved. His aggression originally developed as a defense mechanism in the slums, where he struggled to believe that anyone could show kindness without expecting payment or exploitation in return. 49 50

Beneath that harshness, he is intensely protective and patient with those he loves.
