Background / History

Tanjiro was raised in Anyang Town as the eldest son of the Kamado family. After his father’s death, he assumed responsibility for supporting the household by selling charcoal. His honesty and willingness to help others made him popular with the townspeople, though he stubbornly refused gifts or favors he felt he had not earned. 134

Hiruma sought out the Kamado family because he suspected them to be inheritors of Sun Breathing. Tanjiro first encountered him while attempting to rescue him from a wolf pack, only to discover that Hiruma had tamed the wolves. Tanjiro trusted Hiruma after discerning through scent that he was not malicious. 134 135

Muzan attacked the Kamado home shortly after Hiruma became their guest. Tanjiro recognized Muzan’s overwhelming evil through his scent and understood his own helplessness when he could not move under the demon’s pressure. Nezuko was transformed into a demon during the attack, and Tanjiro refused to harm her even when she instinctively attacked him. 136 137

After Nezuko demonstrated that she could resist Hiruma’s Rare Blood, Tanjiro guaranteed that she would never harm another person. He accepted the responsibility of personally executing her—and committing seppuku afterward—if she ever did. Giyu agreed to train him under the Water Breathing lineage, while Hiruma planned to guide him toward Sun Breathing after he had mastered Water Breathing. 143
