Background

Soldier Gu are one of the seven known categories of Gu. Gu Children commonly raise only Mortal Gu and Intermediate Gu, while Soldier Gu are treated as the weapons of full Gu Masters, comparable to a Daoist's ritual implement, a martial artist's armor armament, or a divine weapon. 9

The first Soldier Gu encountered in the Gu Cave was later named Split-Tooth. It had been feeding on Gu Mothers and Gu Children while nearing a molt. Liu Feng recognized the opening created by its shedding process and refined it instead of fleeing. 9

Insect Valley considered Split-Tooth its property rather than Liu Feng's personal possession. Lu Yao allowed him to retain it only if he successfully completed the Exotic Gu implantation; failure would have meant the Soldier Gu changing hands. 11

Appearance

Soldier Gu have no uniform body plan. Their forms generally resemble enlarged, weaponized insects or worms, with their traits determined by their individual type and grade.

• Split-Tooth initially possessed five long, tooth-lined limbs that could function as either blades or whips; its rear body released poisonous mist. 9
• After reaching the third grade, Split-Tooth could unfold across six zhang, resembling a giant clawfish with five thick, toothed legs. 210

Weapon Control

A Soldier Gu is controlled through its master's Qi and requires divided attention in combat. It has only insect instincts and cannot independently distinguish targets or fight with human judgment. 13

Offensive Combat

Soldier Gu can serve as direct melee weapons, using specialized limbs, venom, mass, or carapaces to attack.

Certain Soldier Gu are built for protection, movement, or evasion rather than straightforward killing.

• Snake Scorpion can close its legs around a Gu Master to form insect armor; its tail also improves movement and allows the wearer to glide. 243

Growth and Carrying Capacity

Soldier Gu increase dramatically in size as they advance, creating a practical problem for Gu Masters who lack internal storage spaces.

• Third-grade Soldier Gu can become too large to carry conveniently; without a Savage Gu, a master may be unable to bring one into battle at a moment's notice. 202
