Definition
A Gu Master is a cultivator whose power comes from Gu insects—especially Exotic Gu implanted into the body. Successfully implanting and hatching an Exotic Gu egg qualifies a person as a true Gu Master; survivors whose implantation fails may instead become stronger but incomplete Gu Servants. 3 14
Gu Master cultivation is defined by Metamorphic Rebirth. Each successful rebirth is a physical and spiritual transformation into a new “life,” while failure can reduce the cultivator to a mindless Gu insect. 14
Metamorphic Rebirth
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| First-Life Gu Master | 14 | Achieved by successfully implanting an Exotic Gu. |
| Second-Life Gu Master | 14 | Achieved through one Metamorphic Rebirth; the process is compared to shedding one’s skin. |
| Third-Rebirth Gu Master | 169 | A documented higher stage; a Gu Master at this level can possess a third-grade Exotic Gu. |
| Four-Life Body | 296 | A mature rebirth stage; failure to advance beyond it can leave one only half a step into the Five-Life Body. |
| Five-Life Body | 179 | Gu Masters form a life Gu and begin to touch the level of the true spirit, allowing survival through another body if the original body is destroyed. |
| Eight-Life Body | 354 | An eighth-grade King Gu can suppress the cultivator’s inner heaven and earth and draw in immortal qi. |
| Gu Immortal | 619 | A reborn Gu Master whose Exotic Gu have reached immortal grade; Liu Feng’s ascension creates a Metamorphic Gu Immortal. |
Cultivation
Exotic Gu
Exotic Gu are the foundation of a Gu Master’s path. They are implanted as eggs, hatched within a host, and developed through medicine, nourishment, molting, and predation. Their abilities vary drastically by species. 3 13 17
- Ox Eater enhances appetite, physical strength, and bodily resilience; its hosts can gain physiques comparable to or stronger than martial artists. 3 18 52
- Evolution Pupil produces additional eyes and grants expanded vision, motion tracking, and disruptive visual techniques. 7 18
- Fire Eater grants Liu Feng powerful Gu Fire after hatching. 17
- Drought Fiend strengthens the body and can command aspects of the five elements, though less completely than a Daoist of the Five Elements Realm. 296
- Mirror Shadow is associated with illusion and reflection-based Gu arts. 169 191
- Void Flower, Cloud Snake, Wooden Fish, and Night Cry were four Exotic Gu connected to the Qu Family Village Insect Nest. 82
A fully grown Exotic Gu cannot be implanted like an egg. It may instead be used to raise Gu, cultivate herbs, refine medicine, or serve as living fertilizer in a medicine garden. 13
Gu Swarms
Gu Masters can cultivate and command large swarms of ordinary and Intermediate Gu. Their insects function as weapons, scouts, alarms, poison carriers, and sources of medicinal refinement. 271 309
- Gu insects can detect intruders; killing or disabling them alerts their master. 158 309
- Swarms may number in the hundreds of thousands and consume one another in large-scale battles. 224
- Gu Masters can use another Gu Master’s poisonous qi and body as a Gu-rearing pool to breed insects. 243
- Dead Gu Masters and failed cultivators may be reduced to fertilizer, Insect Medicine, or nourishment for other Gu. 14 22 73
Gu Arts
Gu arts are techniques produced through Gu insects and their interaction with the host’s body, poison qi, bloodline, or spiritual power.
- Gu arts can strengthen the body, manipulate poison, create illusions, distort the senses, control weather, produce fire, or generate insect limbs. 50 81 169 296
- Some arts are better suited to support, interference, scouting, or battlefield control than direct combat, but become highly dangerous in capable hands. 7 18
- Gu arts may manifest visible insect-like changes, such as extra eyes, insect legs, scales, mouthparts, or swarms erupting from the body. 18 81 296 690
Soldier Gu
Soldier Gu are large combat Gu used as weapons, mounts, transports, or living armaments.
- After reaching higher grades, Soldier Gu can expand to massive sizes and become difficult to carry without an internal space. 51 202
- They may be shaped into weapons such as the Split-Tooth greatsword or used as enormous battlefield creatures. 18 87 238
- A Soldier Gu’s body can become comparable to an artifact after reaching immortal grade, though its intelligence remains limited. 598
Savage Gu and Inner Spaces
A Savage Gu can contain an internal space, allowing a Gu Master to carry larger Soldier Gu, greater numbers of insects, and cultivation resources. 82 202
- Refining the internal space of a Savage Gu into one’s body is associated with housing more Gu insects. 82
- Savage Gu can also serve as mobile shelters, medicine pools, and spaces for raising Gu. 101 507
- Advanced Savage Gu Masters may fuse with vast numbers of immortal-grade Savage Gu and gain devouring abilities. 690
King Gu
King Gu are exceptionally important Gu tied to high-level rebirth and the cultivation of an inner heaven and earth. 354
- King Gu Crimson Luminary is a Yang King Gu possessed by Liu Feng. 282
- An eighth-grade King Gu can stabilize an inner heaven and earth and draw immortal qi. 354
- Ninth-grade King Gu are described as nearly legendary; some may manifest part of an inner heaven and earth in battle. 354
Other Path Gu
Other Path Gu are rare and exceptionally dangerous Gu that grant abilities outside conventional cultivation paths. They can rival Dao-transformation methods or provide an additional path of power. 620 690 693
- Their hosts may possess strength far beyond their nominal cultivation stage. 620 690
- Other Path Gu can consume or control their host; Li Nidao’s Soul Erosion Gu drove him mad and took command of his body. 693
- Some Other Path Gu arts consume the user’s vitality, spiritual power, or divine soul every time they are activated. 694
Appearance
Gu Masters have no uniform appearance. Their bodies often become visibly inhuman as Gu mature, Gu arts activate, or Metamorphic Rebirth changes their flesh. 3 14
- Extra or compound eyes may grow on the face, arms, head, or other parts of the body. 18 50 169
- Gu insects can push through a host’s skin, making the body appear covered in fleshy buds. 3
- Some Gu Masters manifest insect legs, scales, mouthparts, or other insectoid structures in combat. 81 296 690
- Failed transformations can leave cultivators as deformed monsters or senseless Gu insects. 14 17
- Powerful Gu Masters may retain a human appearance while concealing enormous swarms, Soldier Gu, or internal spaces within their bodies. 202 233
Society and Practices
Gu Children and Gu Servants
Insect Valley uses Gu Children as laborers and potential candidates for Exotic Gu implantation. Children who survive unsuccessful implantation become Gu Servants, whose status and strength exceed that of ordinary children but remain below true Gu Masters. 1 3
- Gu Children gather herbs, prepare medicinal mud, raise Gu, and perform dangerous labor around poisonous pits and insect nests. 1 22
- Only a small number survive implantation and become disciples; many candidates die or become malformed. 17 23
- Insect Valley’s medicine garden uses former Gu Masters transformed into Gu as fertilizer for medicinal plants. 13 14
Predation
Gu Master society is intensely predatory. Gu Masters of the same level are considered valuable nourishment, and sects such as the Erosion Sect hunt other Gu Masters for their blood, insects, and resources. 73 81
- Captured Gu Masters may be harvested for Exotic Gu, Insect Medicine, blood essence, or poisonous qi. 82 243
- Gu Masters can be implanted with additional Gu and kept alive as captives or breeding vessels. 408
- Advanced practitioners may refine corpses, Medicine Persons, or even living immortals into cultivation resources. 229 619
