Background / History
Childhood and the Black Tide
Phainon grew up alongside Cyrene in Aedes Elysiae. His childhood ambition was simply to become a little hero who protected his village. When the Black Tide destroyed it, he was forced to kill a familiar villager who had become a slaughtering monster, using a hoe in what his memories describe as the first “sword” of his life 136.
He later entered Okhema, where crowds hailed him as a savior—a title he did not want to hear. At Castrum Kremnos, he fought Mydei for ten days and ten nights before both collapsed and acknowledged each other’s strength. He also studied under Anaxa at Tree Court 136.
The Reincarnation Cycles
After Cyrene dissipated in his arms and Lygus witnessed the fulfillment of destruction, Phainon entered an endless cycle of reincarnation. Cyrene had split herself into thirty million pieces, leaving him to carry the suffering of the cycles alone 136.
Phainon repeatedly tried to avert the Black Tide: hunting the Tai Tan, gathering Core Flames, warning his companions that their world was false, and shouldering the task himself. None of these approaches changed the ending. In the 134th cycle, Anaxa believed his account and joined him in seeking the Flame of Reason, but Cipher reached it first 136.
His pursuit eventually brought him into conflict with former friends. Cipher and Anaxa accused him of becoming as indifferent as the gods he condemned; Castorice refused to surrender the Death Core Flame because she would not let him walk toward an end worse than death. Phainon continued fighting and reclaiming their flames despite the cost. Ye Qiong later recalled approximately four hundred million Core Flames, each personally recovered from Phainon’s companions across the cycles 135 137.
| Remembered cycle | Event |
|---|---|
| 134th | Anaxa accepts Phainon’s account of the false world and collaborates with him 136. |
| 108,642nd | Phainon confronts Mydei for the Core Flame of Strife; Mydei insists on meeting him in battle 137. |
| 23,570,000th | Phainon defeats Feng Jin and takes the Sky Core Flame. She expresses faith that he will lead them to a new dawn 137. |
| 33,550,335th | Black Phainon, his burned-out former self, passes his memories, power, and Core Flames into him through their final duel 137. |
| 33,550,336th | Phainon bids farewell to Ye Qiong and sets out against the god of destruction, while Ye Qiong assumes the authority of salvation 137. |
His restored memories also include his fusion with the Iron Curtain, its eventual defeat through everyone’s combined efforts, and the Pathfinder’s subsequent farewell 138.
Rebirth in Douluo
Ye Qiong obtained the ability to remove complete souls from worlds within books and place them in a new world. He temporarily abandoned his trailblazing journey in exchange for his companions’ rebirth, allowing Phainon and the other Chrysos Heirs to begin again as his students 138.
Their former memories were sealed. Ye Qiong later drew and shattered Phainon’s Oracle Card to enable their eventual awakening; the memories surfaced while Phainon absorbed his God-Bestowed Spirit Ring on Sea God Island 135 136.
Appearance
- White hair: His Oracle Card depicts a white-haired young man with a greatsword on his back and a resolute gaze 135.
- Sword-bearing presentation: He enters the tournament with Dawn Invader hanging at his waist and walks with his head held high 62.
- Khaslana form: Golden flames spread from his eyes across his body; a blazing Sun Brand appears behind his head, and one purple wing and one yellow wing unfold behind him 63 64.
- Reborn body: After recovering his memories, he notices that his hands are clean and without calluses, unlike the bloodstained hands of his remembered lives 138.
Personality
Phainon is confident in combat without treating every opponent dismissively. He volunteers to face Shrek’s seven members in the tournament opener and is unafraid upon learning that Spirit Hall’s Golden Generation consists of Soul Kings. Nevertheless, he acknowledges Tang San’s cleverness when watching him counter Demon Charm 63 93 96.
Among friends, he is considerably less imposing. After defeating Shrek, he becomes awkward when his classmates crowd around to praise him and looks to Ye Qiong for help. The headmaster’s quiet approval brings out a wholehearted grin 65.
He contributes to everyday academy life as readily as to its battles: cleaning the team-building venue, reserving Ye Qiong’s seat, and gathering the students when asked. After graduation, he promises to send useful discoveries back from his travels and rallies his companions to improve Amphoreus in the dean’s absence 58 61 106.
His remembered lives reveal a harsher side shaped by repeated failure. He becomes emotionally numb, threatens former allies, and takes their Core Flames by force, yet continues to regard the suffering as something he must bear rather than a reason to abandon his mission 136 137.
Abilities & Skills
Chaoslana and Sustained Combat Growth
Phainon’s Power-Attack martial soul grows stronger the longer he fights. Tang San notices this during their early encounter, and it remains a defining advantage when Phainon handles the academy’s strongest challengers 7 20 49.
- Ye Qiong assigns opponents above level 55 to him, identifying him as the strongest student in that challenge schedule 49.
- He wins against opponents substantially stronger than those faced by the other students 49.
- No numerical growth rate or upper limit is specified in the supplied passages.
Swordsmanship
Phainon practices swordsmanship independently and can overwhelm tournament opponents without using a soul skill 53 84.
- Produces a golden crescent-shaped shockwave that burns away Tang San’s Blue Silver Grass and sends him flying 7.
- Defeats all seven Flame Glory Academy competitors with one sword strike each, without activating a soul skill 84.
- Uses sweeping golden arcs to strike multiple attackers during Spirit Hall’s ambush 88.
Fourth Soul Skill: He Shall Bear the Eternal Burning of the World
This ten-thousand-year soul-ring skill transforms Phainon into Khaslana, the supreme form of his martial soul. All his soul skills become special transformed versions while it is active 63 65.
- Grants an airborne, winged form surrounded by golden flames 63 64.
- Its activation releases enough pressure to shake the arena and blast apart stone 63.
- Consumes a large amount of Soul Power, making it suited to ending battles quickly 65.
- Can end automatically through exhaustion; after the ambush’s meteor attack, Phainon loses consciousness as the transformation collapses 89.
Calamity: Soul-Slaying Burning Decree
An enhanced version of Phainon’s second soul skill available in Khaslana form. He invokes “Brand of Strife!” when unleashing it; Ye Qiong explains that it is a defensive counterattack, not evidence that the transformation prevents movement 64 65.
- Requires an opponent’s attack to trigger its passive counterattack effect 65.
- Releases an enhanced blade of sword energy capable of clearing the field 65.
- Carves a trench several feet deep across the arena and defeats Shrek’s seven-member team with one counterattack 64 65.
- Carries Mydei’s Brand of Strife, provoking Mydei’s recognition of the phrase even before his memories return 65.
Transformed Defense and Meteor Attack
- Flaming shield: Gathers golden flames along Dawn Invader to create a shield in Khaslana form 88.
- Soul Saint resistance: Blocks repeated punches from the Ironclad Turtle Soul Saint without being injured, though the first impact pushes him backward 88.
- Meteor attack: Unleashes a meteor that overwhelms the attackers’ attempts to resist it. The expenditure leaves him unconscious, requiring his companions to catch him 89.
Leadership and Recovered Experience
- Commands both academy squads to form a defensive line when Spirit Hall ambushes them 88.
- Serves as First Team’s captain and combat core, while Keleradra directs formations and match arrangements 60 61.
- Retains battle instincts, knowledge of the world, and previously buried truths after his memories awaken; his young body remains far from its former peak 138.

Relationships
- Ye Qiong / Pathfinder — Present-life headmaster and past-life partner. Ye Qiong recognizes the burden of Phainon’s cycles, assumes the authority of salvation, and enables his rebirth. Phainon is deeply affected by learning what that rebirth cost him 65 137 138.
- Cyrene — Childhood companion from Aedes Elysiae. Her fragmentation leaves Phainon bearing the cycles alone; she later expresses guilt and resolves to help the Chrysos Heirs reclaim their power 136.

- Tribios / Tribbie — First Team’s lead teacher. She helps Phainon investigate the ruin and checks his recovery after his memories awaken 60 120 138.
- Feng Jin — Caring teammate who offers him a towel after his tournament victory and checks on him after his memory awakening. In a remembered cycle, she dies after expressing faith in his mission 65 137 138.
- Tang San — Recurring opponent who resents Phainon’s strength and ten-thousand-year fourth ring. Phainon defeats him in their early encounter and later forces Shrek’s entire team to concede 7 63 65.
