Background and History

Fall and revenge against Kirigakure

Obito was once remembered within the Uchiha clan as a kind, sunny youth and one of Minato Namikaze’s direct subordinates. After his presumed death, Fugaku personally prevented the clan from reclaiming the Sharingan Obito had left with Kakashi out of respect for Minato. 418

After being saved by an elderly Madara, Obito witnessed Rin’s death and concluded that the shinobi world itself was hopeless. He took up Madara’s name and pursued a world remade through the Eye of the Moon Plan. 423

Following the Nine-Tails’ Attack on Konoha, Obito infiltrated the Land of Water and defeated Karatachi Yagura without alerting the Mizukage’s guards. He placed Yagura under Mangekyō Sharingan control, partly to enact personal revenge against Kirigakure rather than out of necessity for the Eye of the Moon Plan. 122 Through Yagura, he terrorized Kirigakure’s suspect clans and diverted the village’s intelligence, funds, and supplies to Akatsuki. 163 412

Akatsuki and the Eye of the Moon Plan

Assuming the identity of “Madara,” Obito used White Zetsu to distribute orders and recruit personnel across the world. He had Nagato and Konan approach Sasori, Hidan, and Orochimaru, intending to assemble the organization needed to capture the Tailed Beasts. 123 164

Obito treated Nagato, Black Zetsu, and even Madara’s legacy as means to his own end. He wanted to personally collect the Tailed Beasts, become the Ten-Tails’ jinchūriki, transplant Madara’s Rinnegan, and cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi himself. 424 498

Conflict with Uchiha Shōji

Obito attempted to recover his Sharingan from Kakashi in Konoha, but Hiruzen and Kakashi had hidden the eye elsewhere. He withdrew after severely injuring Kakashi and used White Zetsu to cover his escape. 430 432 He later recovered his eyes with Danzō’s cooperation. 510 516

Learning that Shōji possessed the Rinnegan and Truth-Seeking Balls convinced Obito that he could no longer delay Madara’s revival. He and Black Zetsu enlisted Orochimaru to reanimate Madara, then joined Madara’s move against Nagato and the subsequent confrontation at Konoha. 511 516 517

During the final battle, Obito, Black Zetsu, and Orochimaru temporarily fought together against Satoru while Madara faced Shōji. Obito was later killed by Shōji as Konoha and Kirigakure’s resistance collapsed. 526 531

Personality

Obito’s former kindness became absolute despair after Rin’s death. He believed that reviving Rin alone would not solve anything, because the world’s continuing wars would merely place her in danger again. His answer was an artificial world of permanent peace, even if it was only an illusion. 415

He is manipulative, cold, and initially overconfident in Kamui. Encounters with Minato and Shōji taught him that his intangibility could be countered, making him markedly more cautious: he began traveling with Black Zetsu and extensive White Zetsu surveillance to avoid ambushes. 405 489
