Background / History

Years before the events at Heaven Dou Royal Academy, Xue Xing encountered Dugu Bo in the Heaven Dou Imperial Family's hunting grounds while the latter was suffering an uncontrolled Martial Soul Backlash and being pursued by old enemies. Rather than attack him, Xue Xing sealed the hunting grounds and helped hold off the pursuers for three days, allowing Dugu Bo to suppress the backlash. Dugu Bo consequently considered himself indebted to the prince. 48

Dugu Bo later resolved several problems for Xue Xing and allowed him to invoke the Poison Douluo's name. Over time, Xue Xing ceased making requests in person, treated Dugu Bo's help as an entitlement, and used his reputation to win over Heaven Dou nobles even when Dugu Bo was absent. 48

Personality

Xue Xing relies heavily on political pressure, prestige, and indirect provocation. He exploits Dugu Bo's former favor as a source of influence, then attempts to force Dugu Bo's return by targeting Dugu Yan at Heaven Dou Royal Academy. 46 48

When challenged, he seeks to frame opponents as threats to imperial authority. After Dugu Bo burns his writ and publicly severs ties, Xue Xing petitions Emperor Xue Ye against Qian Renyuan for allegedly allowing Spirit Hall to interfere in Heaven Dou affairs. 49 51

Conflict with the Dugu Clan

Xue Xing sends representatives to Heaven Dou Royal Academy with a writ demanding that Dugu Yan be taken to his estate under the pretext of protecting her. Dugu Yan refuses, while the academy's education committee also refuses to release her. 49

Dugu Bo returns with Qian Renyuan, destroys Xue Xing's writ with poison, and declares that the favor owed to the prince was repaid long ago. This publicly ends Xue Xing's ability to claim Dugu Bo as his supporter. 49

Petition to the Imperial Court

Following the failed attempt to take Dugu Yan, Xue Xing enters the palace overnight and accuses Qian Renyuan of indulging Dugu Bo's destruction of a princely writ and meddling in Heaven Dou's internal affairs. 50 51

Emperor Xue Ye undermines the complaint by establishing that Dugu Yan was unwilling to leave, the academy did not consent to her removal, and Qian Renyuan had not forcibly entered the academy. Xue Ye approves Xue Qinghe's formal invitation for Qian Renyuan to visit the academy and orders Xue Xing not to attempt to take Dugu Yan again. 52

Attempt to Provoke Qian Renyuan

After losing his court challenge, Xue Xing instructs Xue Beng to give Qian Renyuan an intentionally hostile reception at the academy gate, hoping Qian Renyuan will strike first and create a new political pretext against him. 52

The plan fails when Qian Renyuan turns Xue Beng's attempted carriage search into a question of imperial authority and Spirit Hall's dignity. Xue Beng is forced to apologize publicly rather than risk escalation between Heaven Dou and Spirit Hall. 53
