Background / History

Tang San travels toward Notting City in worn clothing with the goal of enrolling at Notting Junior Spirit Master Academy. He carries the internal power of the Mysterious Heaven Skill and intends to rebuild the Tang Sect's glory on the Douluo Continent. 6

At Notting City's gate, guards insult Tang San and Old Jack for their poverty. Tang San prepares to use a Sleeve Arrow against them, but the arrival of Qian Renyuan's procession interrupts him. Qian Renyuan then throws a valuable jade pendant into the mud before him as “charity,” leaving Tang San furious and determined to retaliate once his Tang Sect techniques mature. 7 8

Yu Xiaogang recognizes that Tang San possesses full innate spirit power despite having Blue Silver Grass, deducing that he has a powerful second martial soul. Tang San is shaken by Yu Xiaogang's assertion that no martial soul is useless and prepares to become his disciple, but Spirit Hall interrupts the ceremony. Yu Xiaogang's subsequent public disgrace shatters Tang San's idealized view of him. 9 10 12 13

Tang San attempts to assassinate Qian Renyuan with a Sleeve Arrow after Yu Xiaogang's downfall. Jiangmo Douluo destroys the weapon effortlessly and pins Tang San down with Super Douluo pressure. 14

He later enters the Soul Hunting Forest alone to obtain his first spirit ring. After nearly defeating a roughly four-hundred-year Datura Snake, Tang San is saved from its counterattack by Qian Renyuan, who takes the spirit ring for himself. Qian Renyuan then has the forest's mobile spirit beasts driven into the inner circle and blocks Tang San from leaving without a ring. 20 24

Injured and unable to find another suitable beast, Tang San kills and absorbs a Ten-Year Solitary Bamboo. The resulting white ring gives him Blue Silver Pole Vault, permanently diverting his original opportunity. 25 27

Following months of ridicule at Notting Academy, Tang San finds a planted herbal notebook describing the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well. Believing its herbs can transform his Blue Silver Grass, he leaves Notting City with a northbound merchant caravan and journeys alone into Sunset Forest. 57 60

Tang San spends two months traversing Dugu Bo's poison formation before reaching the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well, only to find its Immortal Herbs already removed. Dugu Bo confronts him and blinds his right eye with Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor venom; Tang Hao then intervenes and carries him away. 61 62

After Tang Hao reveals himself as the Clear Sky Douluo, Tang San has him rescue the imprisoned Yu Xiaogang. Desperate to overcome his ruined eye, weak first ring, and altered cultivation path, Tang San reunites with Yu Xiaogang, Flender, and Liu Erlong at Shrek Academy. 64 65

Tang San accepts the method recorded in an evil soul master's fragmented manuscript and successfully absorbs foreign Soul Power through his Blue Silver Grass. He then disappears from public view for five years to cultivate this dangerous power. 66

Five years later, Tang San gains notoriety in Suotuo City under the name Asura, defeating opponents in the Great Soul Arena and devouring their Soul Power. After exposing his Clear Sky Hammer and its three thousand-year rings, he openly confronts Qian Renyuan but is decisively defeated; Tang Hao rescues him at great personal cost. 67 70

Tang San subsequently forms a tournament team around himself at Shrek Academy, adopts the identity Tang Yin, and enters the Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Elite Tournament under Blue Tyrant Academy. His concealment ultimately fails as Spirit Hall recognizes him, though Qian Renyuan permits him to advance to the finals. 71 72 79 86 87

During the Spirit City finals, Tang San drains the Soul Power of his own teammates to gain power, publicly confirming the fears that he has become an evil soul master. Xiao Wu defeats and exposes him, and Tang Hao's final rescue attempt ends with Tang Hao being killed by Spirit Hall's Grand Worshippers while Tang San escapes. 92 95

Appearance

Tang San is a thin, small boy who initially arrives in Notting City wearing worn linen clothes, mud-caked straw sandals, and carrying a patched bundle. His appearance becomes increasingly battered during the Notting City and Soul Hunting Forest incidents. 6 7 17 20

After the Sunset Forest incident and five-year time skip, Tang San appears as a one-eyed youth. His blind right eye is normally covered with black cloth or a silver mask, while his visible left eye is frequently described as cold, bloodshot, or filled with killing intent. 61 64 68 69 79

  • Often described in tattered or mud-stained clothes. 7 17
  • Sustains bruises, bloodstains, and a chest wound during his encounter with the Datura Snake. 20 26
  • His Blue Silver Grass develops subtle bamboo-joint patterns after absorbing the Solitary Bamboo ring. 26
  • The strain of devouring foreign Soul Power causes blood to seep from his ruined right eye and stain its covering. 66 70 83 92
  • As Tang Yin, he wears a silver mask that conceals his right eye and identity during the tournament. 79 83

Personality

Tang San is determined, proud, and highly sensitive to humiliation. Public contempt from guards and Qian Renyuan repeatedly fuels his resentment and his desire to become strong enough to exact revenge. 7 20 24 26

He is cautious with his secrets and quickly evaluates threats through the instincts and techniques he brought from the Tang Sect. However, he repeatedly finds himself unable to act against Qian Renyuan because of the overwhelming power represented by Jiangmo Douluo and Spirit Hall. 8 10 14 17

Despite his setbacks, Tang San refuses to surrender. He chooses a weak ten-year soul ring rather than die from his injuries, then resolves to develop even the disappointing Blue Silver Pole Vault into a useful combat and mobility technique. 25 26

Over time, Tang San's determination becomes increasingly ruthless and pragmatic. He treats Yu Xiaogang's guidance, his Shrek teammates, and dangerous cultivation methods chiefly in terms of their utility toward surpassing Qian Renyuan. 65 66 72 79

Tang San is willing to accept extreme physical risk and harm others to obtain power. Although the agony of Soul Power devouring repeatedly worsens his eye injury and damages his meridians, he continues using it against opponents and eventually against his own teammates. 66 70 83 87 92

His pride causes him to repeatedly confront Qian Renyuan before he is ready, refusing to retreat even when Yu Xiaogang warns him to do so. 69 70

Abilities & Skills

Twin Martial Souls

Tang San possesses Blue Silver Grass and a concealed black hammer martial soul.

  • Blue Silver Grass — his publicly known martial soul and the recipient of his first soul ring. Its displayed ring configuration later consists of one white and two yellow rings. 9 25 69
  • Clear Sky Hammer — Tang San's powerful second martial soul, formerly kept secret at Tang Hao's instruction. After five years, Tang San publicly reveals it with three thousand-year soul rings. 25 68 69
  • Yu Xiaogang deduces the existence of the second martial soul from Tang San's full innate spirit power. 9
  • The public exposure of the Clear Sky Hammer contributes to Spirit Hall identifying and pursuing Tang San. 68 71

Mysterious Heaven Skill

An internal cultivation technique Tang San retained from the Tang Sect.

  • Enhances his physical ability and supports his combat endurance. 6 10 21
  • Allows him to stabilize and circulate the weak energy of the Ten-Year Solitary Bamboo spirit ring. 26
  • Tang San expects a breakthrough after obtaining his first spirit ring. 21 25
  • Supports his continued cultivation and the circulation of absorbed foreign Soul Power, though that power remains volatile and harmful. 66 70

Tang Sect Techniques

Tang San employs techniques from his former life to compensate for his lack of soul rings.

  • Sleeve Arrow — concealed wrist-mounted projectile weapon; destroyed by Jiangmo Douluo before reaching Qian Renyuan. 7 14
  • Mysterious Jade Hand — turns his hand jade-white and lets him strike the Datura Snake's damaged scales or break Solitary Bamboo branches. 21 25
  • Purple Demon Eye — used to scan his surroundings before revealing his black hammer martial soul; later helps him identify poison formations and navigate Sunset Forest. 25 60
  • Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track — a movement technique Tang San intends to combine with Blue Silver Pole Vault for evasive positioning. He later uses it in arena combat to evade faster opponents and disrupt enemy formations. 26 69 87
  • Hidden weapons — Tang San uses iron needles and other concealed projectiles to repel bandits and defeat arena opponents. 59 69
  • Poison and herb knowledge — his Tang Sect learning lets him recognize antidotal herbs, prepare basic protection against poisonous miasma, and endure the hazards of Sunset Forest. 58 60

Blue Silver Pole Vault

Tang San's first soul skill, acquired from the Ten-Year Solitary Bamboo.

  • Forms several strands of Blue Silver Grass into a long, hardened, flexible pole. 26
  • Stores force as the pole bends, then launches Tang San forward or upward. 26
  • Can assist with evasive movement, terrain traversal, and changing the angle of hidden-weapon attacks. 26
  • Its effectiveness is limited by the weak, ten-year white soul ring from which it originated. 25 26
  • The skill becomes a frequent source of mockery at Notting Academy and in later soul-master circles. 57 58 68

Soul Power Devouring

A dangerous ability developed from an evil soul master's fragmented cultivation manuscript.

  • Tang San channels Blue Silver Grass into a wounded soul beast or restrained soul master and draws their Soul Power into his own body. 66 70
  • He first succeeds in absorbing a dying Ten-Year Wind Baboon's Soul Power, despite severe pain and bleeding from his ruined right eye. 66
  • He uses the technique to defeat opponents in Suotuo City and during the Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Elite Tournament. 68 83 87
  • Foreign Soul Power is impure and difficult to refine, leaving Tang San vulnerable to backlash, meridian damage, and renewed pain in his right eye. 70 83 92 93
  • The ability fails completely against Qian Renyuan, whose power cannot be meaningfully drained. 70
  • Tang San ultimately drains six of his own teammates during the Spirit City finals, leaving them unconscious and publicly marking himself as an evil soul master. 92 93

Blacksmithing

Tang San possesses practical blacksmithing ability.

  • Repairs warped iron hoops, wheel axles, weapons, and caravan equipment to secure passage north from Notting City. 58 59
  • His work ethic and skill earn him the respect of Captain Zhao's caravan workers. 59

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Sleeve Arrow — Tang Sect hidden weapon mounted in his sleeve; Jiangmo Douluo crushes it into powder. 7 14
  • Patched bundle — carried while traveling to Notting City. 6
  • Notting Academy student certificate — used unsuccessfully to seek entry into the Soul Hunting Forest. 20
  • Herbal notebook — a planted notebook Tang San discovers in a Notting City bookstore; its descriptions of the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well lead him to Sunset Forest. 57 58
  • Twenty-Four Bridges Bright Moon Night — storage belt used to carry Tang Sect tools and hidden weapons during his time as Asura. 68
  • Masks and eye covering — black cloth conceals his blinded right eye, while a silver mask is used to maintain his Tang Yin identity during the tournament. 68 79

Relationships

  • Qian Renyuan — principal adversary; repeatedly humiliates, surveils, and manipulates Tang San, including intercepting his Datura Snake spirit ring. Tang San vows revenge. 7 14 20 27 Tang San later challenges him openly in Suotuo City and seeks to reach him through the tournament, but Qian Renyuan defeats and repeatedly outmaneuvers him. 69 70 86 93
  • Old Jack — elder companion who travels with Tang San to Notting City and attempts to help him enter the city and academy. 7 9
  • Yu Xiaogang — prospective master whose theory and recognition initially earn Tang San's trust; Tang San's image of him fractures after his exposure and arrest. 9 13 Tang San later has Tang Hao rescue the crippled Yu Xiaogang and continues calling him Master only insofar as his theories may help evolve Blue Silver Grass or provide a path to greater power. 64 66
  • Xiao Wu — Tang San attempts to protect her from Qian Renyuan, but she rejects his intervention and remains indifferent toward him. 16 17 20 Five years later, Xiao Wu explicitly states that remaining beside Qian Renyuan is her own choice and defeats Tang San during the Spirit City finals. 69 93
  • Tang Hao — Tang San's father; secretly observes his forced absorption of the Ten-Year Solitary Bamboo ring and suppresses his anger to avoid exposing himself. 25 26 Tang Hao later reveals himself as the Clear Sky Douluo, saves Tang San from Dugu Bo, protects him during his clashes with Spirit Hall, and dies buying him an opportunity to escape from Spirit City. 62 64 70 94
  • Jiangmo Douluo — Spirit Hall powerhouse who destroys Tang San's Sleeve Arrow, restrains him with pressure, and helps enforce Qian Renyuan's control over the Soul Hunting Forest. 14 23 26
  • Dugu Bo — Spirit Hall-aligned Poison Douluo who allows Tang San through a deliberately opened poison formation, confronts him at the emptied Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well, and blinds his right eye with Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor venom. 60 62
  • Flender — Shrek Academy headmaster who shelters Yu Xiaogang, assists with the evil soul master manuscript, and permits Tang San to recruit Shrek students for his team despite the risks. 65 66 71 72
  • Liu ErlongYu Xiaogang's former companion and Blue Tyrant Academy's head; she helps protect Tang San's tournament identity and team registration, despite growing concern over his actions. 65 66 79 86
  • Dai Mubai, Oscar, Ma Hongjun, Tai Long, Jing Ling, and Jiang Zhu — Tang San's Blue Tyrant Academy teammates. He views them primarily as a team he can use against Qian Renyuan and ultimately devours their Soul Power during the finals. 72 79 92
