Background / History
Dugu Bo spent decades cultivating Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor poison while suffering from its backlash. His venom became intertwined with his Soul Power, flesh, meridians, and marrow. Despite consulting ancient texts and testing numerous herbs, he could only suppress the condition through the environment around the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well 31 37 40.
The same hereditary flaw afflicted his family. Dugu Yan’s parents died from martial soul backlash, leaving her vulnerable to the condition that had tormented her grandfather 31 37.
Years earlier, an uncontrolled poison outbreak during seclusion exposed Dugu Bo to pursuing enemies. He fled into the Heaven Dou imperial hunting grounds, where Prince Xue Xing protected him for three days by sealing the grounds and holding off his pursuers. Dugu Bo subsequently intervened in several disputes for the prince, but Xue Xing gradually began treating his assistance as an entitlement and using his name without permission 48.
Both Spirit Hall and the Heaven Dou Empire attempted to recruit him. He remained independent until Qian Renyuan offered a cure for Dugu Yan 31 34.
Appearance
- Hair: Ink-green to dark green, described as stirring without a breeze when he arrives in a cloud of poison 33 49.
- Eyes: Narrow, with dark-green, snake-like pupils 33 47.
- Clothing: Wears green robes while observing Tang San in Sunset Forest 60.
- Backlash symptoms: Before treatment, dark-green poison markings spread over his exposed arms toward his neck when he released the Soul Power suppressing his toxins 40.
Personality
Dugu Bo is proud, solitary, and resistant to factional control. Qian Daoliu describes him as difficult to influence through either persuasion or force. He is also ruthless toward outsiders, willing to poison or kill over slight provocations 31 34.
His granddaughter is his overriding concern. He attacks Qian Renyuan when he believes Dugu Yan is being harmed, then accepts the possibility of service rather than risk her future. Even after agreeing to cooperate, he insists that Qian Renyuan first prove his ability to cure her 33 34.
He honors his promises. Once Dugu Yan is cured, he kneels and fulfills their agreement while maintaining that his loyalty belongs to Qian Renyuan alone. After his own treatment, his remaining hesitation disappears and his obedience becomes an expression of genuine gratitude 37 40.
Abilities & Skills
Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor
- Manifests a massive serpent phantom supported by nine soul rings 33 40.
- Can condense emerald-green Soul Power into a venomous serpent for a ranged attack 33.
- His decades-cultivated martial soul suppresses Dugu Yan’s newly evolved Serpent Emperor during his treatment 40.
Poison Manipulation
- Releases toxic mist capable of withering courtyard vegetation; uncontrolled poison during detoxification reduces ordinary medicinal herbs to black liquid 33 40.
- Produces corrosive venom that eats through clothing and pits stone 40.
- Even a deliberately weakened, hair-thin wisp of his venom can incapacitate an ordinary Soul Grandmaster 39.
- Uses venom to destroy Prince Xue Xing’s writ and to deter a noble student from approaching Qian Renyuan’s carriage 49 53.
- Blinds Tang San’s right eye with Serpent Emperor venom, overwhelming the Purple Demon Eye’s gathered power 61.
- Limit: Before being cured, he was not immune to his own accumulated venom. Simply extracting it would have severely damaged his meridians and cultivation 34 40.
- Countermeasure: Qian Renyuan’s ice-and-fire-tempered body dissolves his test dose without using Soul Power 39.
Poison Formations
- Personally constructs the poisonous mist formation concealing the medicinal valley and can part its mist to reveal a safe route 35.
- States that even a Soul Douluo entering the original formation without guidance might not escape alive 35.
- Reinforces the defenses with additional outer layers, poison above the valley, blocked old paths, and a relocated entrance on Qian Renyuan’s orders 41 42.
- Claims the revised defenses make the true entrance difficult for even a Titled Douluo to locate without his guidance 42.
- Monitors Tang San’s movements within the formation and deliberately opens a passage as part of Qian Renyuan’s trap 60.
Poison and Herbal Knowledge
- Has spent his life studying poison, consulting ancient texts, and experimenting with medicinal herbs 37 40.
- Identifies the Snowy Swan Kiss’s toxin-amplifying effect through experiments with snake venom, although he initially does not know the herb’s name 35.
- Limit: Cannot identify many immortal herbs in his own garden or fully understand their applications; Qian Renyuan’s knowledge repeatedly surpasses his 34 35 41.
Holdings
- Dugu Bo Estate — His manor near Sunset Forest and a later meeting place for Qian Renyuan and his associates 32 35 62.
- Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well medicinal garden — His former secret refuge for suppressing poison backlash. Ownership passes to Qian Renyuan, but it remains publicly known as Dugu Bo’s private garden to conceal the transfer 34 41 42.
- Garden defenses — Poison formations and estate perimeter guards protect access. The ordinary guards are not told the valley’s true entrance 41 42.
Relationships
- Dugu Yan — Granddaughter and only remaining blood relative. Her safety takes precedence over his independence; he pledges service after Qian Renyuan cures her and evolves her martial soul 31 34 37.
- Qian Renyuan — Personal lord and benefactor. Their relationship moves from hostility to conditional cooperation, then sworn allegiance and wholehearted gratitude after both Dugu family members are cured 33 34 37 40.
- Jiangmo Douluo — Initially opposes Dugu Bo’s attack on Qian Renyuan; later serves alongside him as a protector. Their cooperation remains abrasive, particularly when Qian Renyuan enters the dangerous spring 33 39 47.
- Prince Xue Xing — Former benefactor whose debt Dugu Bo considers repaid. Their relationship breaks down when the prince exploits his reputation and attempts to control Dugu Yan 46 48 49.
- Bibi Dong — Receives formal courtesy as Pope, but not Dugu Bo’s allegiance. He explicitly tells her that serving her son does not mean joining Spirit Hall 43.
- Tang San — Target of Qian Renyuan’s medicinal-garden trap. Dugu Bo guides him through a controlled opening in the formation, then poisons and blinds his right eye 60 61.
- Yue Guan — Briefly clashes with him through their Titled Douluo auras; Dugu Bo immediately withdraws his poison when Qian Renyuan orders them to stop 44.
- Xiao Wu — Recognizes her as a transformed hundred-thousand-year soul beast. His scrutiny frightens her, prompting Qian Renyuan to reassure her that Dugu Bo already possesses his ninth ring 47.
