Background / History

Itachi meets Konan and Chen Xiaoxi in the Land of Wind while traveling with Kisame. When Kisame attempts to take Chen Xiaoxi's sword, Itachi observes Chen's movements with his perpetually active Sharingan, judges Kisame incapable of winning, and orders him to stand down. He also declines Chen's offer of a spar, citing the absence of any grievance; he is privately affected by illness and worsening eyesight. 4

During the Uchiha Clan Downfall Night, Itachi accepts Konoha's extermination plan to preserve the village's peace and protect his younger brother, Sasuke. He agrees to divide the operation with the Masked Man: the Masked Man handles the Uchiha Police Force, while Itachi eliminates the remaining clan members. 20 22

After slaughtering the clan, Itachi reaches Naka Shrine, kills its two guards without hesitation, and reflects on Sasuke's despair. He resolves that Sasuke should survive and grow stronger. 24 At the shrine, he confronts Chen Xiaoxi—posing as a Root operative—after being told that Danzō intends to eliminate both him and the Masked Man. 25

Itachi is decisively wounded in the ensuing fight with Chen. His Sharingan genjutsu is broken, Tsukuyomi fails, and repeated crescent-shaped attacks leave him exhausted and unable to continue fighting effectively. The Masked Man subsequently takes him away from Konoha. 26 27 28 30

He enters Akatsuki after the massacre, publicly severing his Konoha identity by slashing the Leaf symbol on his forehead protector. Pain gives him the Vermilion Bird ring and formally names him Akatsuki's Itachi. 32 Despite accepting Akatsuki's stated peace objective, he is secretly a Leaf spy and is disturbed by the organization's plan to wage war and weaponize the Tailed Beasts. 37
