History

God Valley and the Great Pirate Era

Sengoku fought the Rocks Pirates at God Valley. After Uchiha Hanazuki killed an already-weakened Rocks in a single slash, Sengoku attacked Hanazuki over the lives being consumed by a mysterious tree on the island. Hanazuki evaded him and took a blood sample from his Great Buddha form 282 285.

Sengoku witnessed Roger’s execution at Loguetown, but Roger’s final words sparked the wave of piracy Sengoku had hoped to prevent. By the following month, Sengoku was Fleet Admiral and was struggling to contain the resulting unrest 301 302.

Conflicts with Hanazuki

Sengoku sent fifty warships to confront Douglas Bullet, whose attacks had devastated seven countries. Hanazuki defeated Bullet first, then repelled the Marines, destroyed their warships and took further blood samples from Sengoku. Sengoku survived injured and openly condemned the deaths of his soldiers 303 304.

Years later, Sengoku learned that Hanazuki had appeared near Totto Land. He dispatched Garp and a Buster Call, then brought the threat to the Five Elders. During the ensuing fleet battle, Sengoku fought one of Hanazuki’s summoned beasts in his Great Buddha form; even after repeatedly striking it, he could not keep its severed head from regenerating 333 334 343 344.

Command of the Marines

Sengoku sent his adopted son, Marine officer Donquixote Rosinante, to infiltrate his brother Doflamingo’s pirate group. After Rosinante’s death, Sengoku confronted Doflamingo and declared that he would imprison him and his accomplices 328 361.

Sengoku also struggled with the World Government’s demands. He warned Zefa that investigating its secrets could get even a Fleet Admiral erased, then refused a CP0 demand to issue an arrest warrant for him. He later proposed Blade, a Marine unit trained by Zefa and captained by Garp that could engage the Four Emperors without waiting for ordinary authorization 355 391 463.

Appearance

Sengoku has an afro, a braided beard and a cap. In battle, his Devil Fruit transforms him into a towering, radiant golden Buddha 282 302.

Personality

Sengoku treats civilian casualties and pirate violence as urgent responsibilities of his office. He condemned Bullet’s destruction despite knowing Bullet’s history, and Hanazuki’s killing of Marine soldiers left him grieving as well as furious 303 304.

He is a calculating commander, but his loyalty to Marine justice does not erase his doubts about the World Government. He cautioned Zefa against pursuing dangerous secrets while refusing to hand him over to CP0 355 391.

• His shockwaves staggered Hanazuki’s Golden Serpent, though its damaged head regenerated 343 344.

• Sengoku uses Observation Haki and is shown fighting with Haki during his encounter with Hanazuki 285 303.
• As Fleet Admiral, he directs Buster Calls, assigns officers and coordinates responses to threats across the seas 302 303 333.
• His plans include placing Rosinante inside Doflamingo’s crew and establishing Blade as a more flexible force against the Four Emperors 328 463.

Relationships

• Monkey D. Garp — longtime comrade and friend. Sengoku relies on him against exceptional opponents but is frustrated by the danger Garp’s family ties pose to the Marines 303 415 417.
• Donquixote Rosinante — adopted son and Marine subordinate whom Sengoku assigned to infiltrate Doflamingo’s crew 328 361.
• Zefa — fellow Marine whom Sengoku warned away from World Government secrets and later shielded from CP0’s demand for his arrest 355 391.
• Vice Admiral Tsuru — colleague with whom Sengoku discusses politically sensitive threats, including Garp’s family and Roger’s possible bloodline 417.
• Uchiha Hanazuki — recurring adversary. Their encounters at God Valley and against Marine fleets leave Sengoku acutely aware of the limits of conventional Marine force 285 304 333 344.
