Background / History

Early career and teaching

Orochimaru was Sarutobi Hiruzen’s disciple and distinguished himself during the Second Shinobi World War. His military achievements earned him recognition as one of the Sannin. Hiruzen later recalls a childhood scene in which Orochimaru picked up a white snake skin before his parents’ graves 9 91.

At the beginning of the story, Orochimaru conducts the graduation bell assessment for Hanazuki, Anko, and Yugao. Hanazuki’s concealed abilities surprise him, while his snake techniques punish the other students for leaving their backs exposed 1.

He subsequently offers Hanazuki formal discipleship and the right to leave the battlefield. Their discussion reveals shared skepticism about sacrificing everything for the village and Orochimaru’s ambition to overcome death. He nevertheless arranges for Hanazuki to reinforce the Sand battlefield against Chiyo 8 9.

Danzo supports this mentorship as a means of controlling Hanazuki and distancing him from Hiruzen. Orochimaru confirms that Hanazuki has awakened the Sharingan, warning that the boy’s genjutsu could catch even him if he were careless 17.

Research and the Fourth Hokage candidacy

Orochimaru encourages Hanazuki to explore the world’s ninjutsu with him and teaches him summoning. The lesson goes unexpectedly far when Hanazuki summons the White Snake Sage, who reminds Orochimaru that his constitution is unsuitable for Sage Mode 16 27.

His cooperation with Danzo extends to research specimens and political ambition. Danzo supplies a corpse with an unusual bloodline limit and retains authority over research into the First Hokage’s cells. Orochimaru also argues that Hanazuki’s battlefield achievements can contribute to his own standing as the boy’s teacher 17 38.

During the war, a camouflaged snake watches Hiruzen’s study. After intelligence leaks endanger Konoha forces, Hiruzen explicitly warns Orochimaru about crawling traces found on the ceiling; Hanazuki likewise attributes the resulting crisis to his teacher 40 43 44.

Orochimaru attempts to influence the Fourth Hokage selection through bribery, with Danzo openly endorsing him. Hiruzen rejects his candidacy because he lacks the trust of Konoha’s jonin and the support of its jinchuriki, securing Minato’s appointment instead 72 73.

After losing the contest, Orochimaru prepares to leave Konoha and leaves his laboratories to Hanazuki. When Anko refuses to accompany him, he bites her neck and forcibly implants a Cursed Seal before abandoning the facility 73 74.

Defection and Akatsuki

Orochimaru later returns to Konoha because his forbidden-jutsu experiments have progressed, declaring that the Hokage position no longer interests him. He also acknowledges cultivating Eight-Tails tissue and agrees to deliver a sample to Hanazuki 86.

Hiruzen discovers him experimenting on Konoha ninja to develop immortality. Unable to kill his former pupil, Hiruzen allows him to escape; Anbu are subsequently sent to hunt him. A later account states that Orochimaru killed two Anbu in Hiruzen’s presence during the defection 91 111.

Reports eventually place Orochimaru in Akatsuki. He attempts to recruit Sasori using a reanimated Third Kazekage, takes an experimental interest in Hidan’s immortality, and proposes partnering with Itachi. Nagato rejects the partnership because Akatsuki members normally operate alone 110 128 142 160.

When Akatsuki accepts a mission to destroy Konoha, Orochimaru requests three years to finish his experiments. He also seeks the establishment of a ninja village in the Land of Rice Fields and maintains his connection with Danzo, sending him an arm covered in Sharingan 163 167.

Konoha Destruction Plan

Orochimaru advances the invasion through correspondence with Danzo and an agreement approved by Rasa. His envoy, Yakumi, enters Root as Danzo’s subordinate 171.

During the Chunin Exams, he infiltrates the Forest of Death using the identities of murdered Kusagakure examinees. He targets Naruto and Sasuke, especially coveting Sasuke’s eyes and body, but fails to recruit him. Their coordinated attacks force Orochimaru to defend against Kirin and then withdraw 183 184 185 186.

Hanazuki subsequently removes him from the exam venue, where he has been disguised as an Otogakure lead jonin. Orochimaru reveals his successful Immortality Technique but is overwhelmed by Hanazuki’s hand-signless ninjutsu and Rinnegan. He retreats through the Ring of Void and reports the discovery to Akatsuki 187 188.

During the invasion, Orochimaru confronts Hiruzen inside the Four Violet Flames Formation and deploys the reanimated First and Second Hokage. Hiruzen answers with the Dead Demon Consuming Seal, whose Reaper strikes at Orochimaru’s arms. Orochimaru later transforms into Yamata no Orochi, but Hanazuki seals the giant serpent and intercepts a small fleeing white snake 192 193 194 197.

Return during the Fourth Shinobi World War

After his defeat, Nagato and Black Zetsu plunder Orochimaru’s underground laboratory in the Land of Rice Fields. Its stored genetic records, forbidden techniques, and Tailed Beast chakra become resources for their war effort 225.

Kurenai performs the Evil-Sealing Method on Anko’s Cursed Seal, releasing a white snake from which Orochimaru emerges. Anko offers him the possibility of supervised freedom in exchange for military service, while threatening that Hanazuki will destroy every remaining resurrection method if he refuses 231.

Learning that Black Zetsu stole his research—including a Madara specimen taken from Konoha—helps secure his cooperation. Orochimaru uses the Grim Reaper Mask to release the Dead Demon Consuming Seal, then prepares White Zetsu bodies and reanimates the four Hokage 231.

He accompanies them to the battlefield, claiming that his most brilliant student ordered him to assist the Allied Forces. Kakashi and other Konoha ninja initially treat his return as a hostile intrusion 233 234.

Scientific advisor

Four years after the war, Orochimaru serves as scientific advisor at Konoha’s Scientific Ninja Tool Department. His continued work is subject to an agreement that he stop human experimentation in exchange for being allowed to witness the shinobi world’s history 244.

His artificial Tailed Beast proposal has been adopted, although the resulting soldiers can last only five minutes against Neji. He also works on the Gate of Worlds, attempting to reach the Limited Tsukuyomi world 244.

Eighteen Tailed Beasts’ chakra proves insufficient until Hanazuki supplies the Book of Vermilion Moon. Orochimaru installs it in the apparatus, and the combined power of crimson moonlight, the beasts’ chakra, and Naruto’s Sage-enhanced natural energy activates the passage 244.

Appearance

Personality

Orochimaru pursues immortality as the foundation for mastering every ninjutsu, forbidden technique, and secret art. Political office is ultimately secondary: he regards even Konoha and the Hokage title as insignificant beside completing his research 38 86 188.

He treats gifted ninja, bloodlines, and unusual bodies as potential research assets. His admiration for Hanazuki coexists with a desire for the boy’s eyes, while his interest in Sasuke develops into an attempt to acquire a compatible vessel. He willingly sacrifices fellow Konoha ninja for experiments 91 143 187.

His teaching is provocative and frequently cruel. He enjoys frightening students, tests them through lethal danger, and deliberately mentions Itachi to destabilize Sasuke. Yet he also expresses pride in his pupils’ achievements and occasionally shows genuine concern, particularly when Hanazuki summons the White Snake Sage 1 27 184 186.

Orochimaru is intensely protective of his research data. Black Zetsu’s theft of his laboratory materials provokes more immediate outrage than appeals to military duty, making this attachment a useful means of securing his cooperation 231.
