Background

Sakumo was recognized as an elite Konoha jōnin whose reputation as the White Fang was known beyond the village; even Konoha's Sannin were said to treat him with considerable respect. Hiruzen Sarutobi assigned him as Hayato's jōnin instructor immediately after Hayato became a ninja. Their initial squad consisted only of Sakumo and Hayato due to unspecified special circumstances. 33 34

He assessed Hayato through a serious sparring match, instructing him to fight with killing intent. Though Sakumo identified flaws in Hayato's kunai work and pressured him with swordsmanship, Hayato ultimately defeated him with the Rasengan.
