Background / History
Dan Katō’s Assassination and the Land of Rain
Orochimaru’s cooperation with Danzō includes involvement in Dan Katō’s assassination. Dan’s corpse and Spiritual Transformation Technique offer valuable material for his investigation of the soul, while Danzō benefits from eliminating Dan and securing Orochimaru’s assistance 112 120.
When Baishi and Tsunade discover the conspiracy, Orochimaru attacks them with snakes, poison, Root suicide agents, and a Kusanagi sword. Baishi wounds him with Lightning Release, but Orochimaru survives by shedding his burned body. Baishi’s regeneration immediately becomes a more compelling research subject than Dan’s remains 112.
Orochimaru blocks their escape with Triple Rashomon and threatens the remnant of Dan’s soul to exploit Tsunade’s grief. During the ensuing confrontation, Baishi’s intangibility allows the sword and attacking snakes to pass through him, leaving Orochimaru visibly horrified 112 113.
Mount Kikyo and the Defection Deal
At Mount Kikyo, Orochimaru retains overall command but yields practical authority to Baishi after being confronted with evidence that Baishi and Tsunade saved poisoned soldiers. His covert black-mamba test fails against Baishi’s spatial ocular technique, and he relinquishes the tiger tally controlling troop deployment 117.
He subsequently exploits Minato’s near-defeat by Chiyo to undermine Minato’s reputation. Arriving with Root forces, he claims credit for saving the wounded camp and presents Minato’s predicament as incompetence 120.
After Baishi attacks Root, Orochimaru’s surveillance snake detects unusually pure Wood Release chakra. He uncovers Baishi’s deception but is blackmailed with stolen Sharingan-rejection research and Hashirama-cell specimens. He agrees to provide a drug intended to drain Minato’s chakra without obvious poisoning symptoms 133 134.
Orochimaru later offers to conceal Baishi’s responsibility for Root’s destruction in exchange for research and the secret of his “Perfect Body.” Baishi physically subdues him and dictates different terms: Orochimaru must defect, take his research, and publicly accept responsibility for injuring Danzō. A Sharingan and fusion data make the bargain worth accepting 138 139.
His defection includes destroying Root’s remaining western facility, attacking ANBU pursuers, stealing classified scrolls, and leaving a blood-written confession 141.
The Uchiha Ambush
Baishi uses the promise of Orochimaru’s Sharingan and Hashirama-cell research to lure Fugaku and nearly a hundred Uchiha elites into pursuit. Orochimaru prepares an ambush in the Forest of Death with poisoned Explosive Tags, snakes, Rashomon, and sword attacks 142 143.
Fugaku briefly catches him in Sharingan genjutsu, but Orochimaru escapes through a shed skin and paralyzes him with a venomous bite. He then reveals that Owl arranged the encounter and that the coveted research has already been traded away 143.
The slaughter awakens Fugaku’s Mangekyō Sharingan. Baishi intervenes, defeats Fugaku, and removes his eyes. Orochimaru attempts a surprise attack on Baishi, but Wood Release stops him and impales a decoy body, prompting his retreat 144.
Alliance with Obito and the Poison Marsh
Orochimaru’s first documented negotiation with Obito begins after he approaches the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. Surviving Obito’s attack through snake substitution, he offers research into the statue’s chakra, Hashirama Cells, and Sharingan specimens to develop a countermeasure against Baishi. Obito permits access to peripheral material and imposes a three-month deadline 158.
During the later assault on Konoha, Orochimaru observes from more than ten kilometers away and summons the reanimated Minato and Fugaku. After this attempt fails, he escapes and accepts Obito’s offer of the statue’s chakra and Madara’s secrets, leaving with him to join a larger organization 208 211.
In the Land of Rain, Orochimaru gathers bloodline-user corpses, excavates old battlefields, and retrieves White Zetsu remains. He also extracts diluted Wood Release cells from a burned corpse and experiments with using them to strengthen a sacrifice capable of bearing Madara’s chakra 227 240.
At Sighing Poison Marsh, he cooperates with Obito’s attempt to eliminate Konan. Orochimaru instead becomes interested in capturing her enhanced body and deploys White Zetsu followed by regenerating explosive Deathsworn to exhaust her 243 244 245 246.
Baishi destroys the reanimated soldiers with Yin-Yang-infused lightning. Orochimaru’s subsequent poisoned-sword ambush fails against Wood Release restraints, forcing him to shed his body and flee. He ultimately abandons both his sword and cultivated test subjects to escape the marsh 248 249 254.
Border Research and the Sound Four
Orochimaru leaves more than a hundred dormant Wood Release experiments around Sunagakure, including near wells and granaries. Baishi takes control of these creations through superior Yang Release and chakra threads. Orochimaru’s subordinates later attempt to recover failed subjects at Withered Bone Hill 283 315.
His political network includes Hojo Tokugawa, who supplies captured Uchiha as experimental vessels in exchange for life-extending medicines and methods of eliminating political rivals. When Hojo fears exposure, Orochimaru refuses to rescue him and recognizes the message as Baishi’s bait 349 350.
Rather than appear personally, Orochimaru sends the Sound Four to investigate Root’s destruction, verify the experiment list, and obtain intelligence or living tissue from Baishi. Their defeat only intensifies his interest in Baishi’s body 350 367.
After examining Tayuya’s consciousness, Orochimaru is struck by Baishi’s destructive Yang Release mark. He amputates his right arm at the elbow before the effect spreads, then orders Kabuto to accelerate reanimation preparations 374 375.
The Forest of Death Confrontation
Orochimaru knowingly follows a deliberately opened gap in Konoha’s barrier. The route closes behind him and Kabuto, trapping them within a forest monitored by the Hyuga. Despite recognizing Baishi’s invitation, he treats the confrontation as a “pilgrimage” rather than a reason to retreat 381 384 385.
He uses the reanimated Second Mizukage and Second Tsuchikage as probes before appearing with Kabuto and a heavily sealed black coffin. Surrounded by Hyuga forces, he releases the coffin’s weapon: a Mutant combining Wood Release and Ice Release 403 404 408.
The Mutant initially devastates the Hyuga, but Baishi exposes its instability and overwhelms it remotely. When Orochimaru attempts to recover its Cursed Seal core, Baishi destroys the core, rupturing Orochimaru’s chakra network and destabilizing his soul 408 416 419.
Orochimaru becomes fixated on collecting Baishi’s golden energy despite his failing body. Kabuto forcibly evacuates him with a swarm of snakes. Under renewed torment from Baishi’s Crescent Mark, Orochimaru sheds his body again, leaving the discarded flesh to bear the continuing pain while he escapes in an extremely weakened state 420 422.
Connections to Kyoto
Analysis of Orochimaru’s destroyed Cursed Seal reveals Diamond Ink, a restricted sealing mineral. Baishi interprets this as evidence that Hojo and the Daimyo Residence continue financing the experiments 424.
Further examination shows that the seal can draw power from underground leylines through a regulating formation. Baishi identifies the Daimyo Residence in Kyoto as the likely source of the energy used to empower Orochimaru’s Skeleton Monster 429.
Orochimaru is later named among the dangerous figures implicated in a broader network involving capital interests, the Tsukuyomi Trading Company, and Sasori 622.
Appearance
- Pale skin and androgynous features, repeatedly described as corpse-like under laboratory or forest lighting 112 350 404.
- Golden slit pupils, resembling a snake’s eyes 112 139.
- Purple eyeshadow and an unusually long tongue, later explicitly described as forked 243 394.
- Elastic anatomy, including a neck capable of stretching several meters and jaws that open beyond human limits 350 422.
- Changing clothing: a green Jonin flak jacket at Mount Kikyo, black combat clothing or robes in the field, and white laboratory clothing during experiments 115 119 208 240 350.
Personality
Orochimaru treats people, corpses, and even his own body as replaceable research material. He dismisses the suffering of captives, the losses of his subordinates, and warnings about dangerous experiments whenever they promise useful knowledge. His willingness to amputate an arm or discard an entire body reflects the same detachment he applies to unwilling subjects 240 350 367 375 422.
He is perceptive enough to recognize Baishi’s framing, forged intelligence, and deliberately constructed traps. Early encounters show pragmatic restraint: he surrenders authority or accepts unfavorable bargains when confrontation offers little benefit. Later, his fascination with Baishi increasingly overrides that judgment 117 134 139 350 373 384.
His pursuit of immortality develops into pathological fixation. Discoveries that terrify others instead convince him that Baishi embodies scientific truth and eternal life. By the final Forest of Death confrontation, Kabuto must physically remove him because obtaining even a fragment of Baishi’s energy matters more to him than survival 394 420.
