Background / History

During the Mist Village's purge of kekkei genkai clans, the Anbu imprison Mizuki Han in their death row on suspicion of colluding with rebels. A masked guard enters his cell to execute him, but Han counters and kills the guard using Origin Chakra. 1

Han steals the dead guard's uniform, mask, sword, and tool pouch to escape the underground base. Two other Anbu briefly accept his disguise after Haku pretends to be an unruly bloodline-limit prisoner under escort. 2

After several Anbu operatives are killed in the underground tunnels, the organization escalates its response. A dead operative's mask releases neurotoxin as a defensive measure, while encrypted scrolls reveal plans to purge the entire underground facility with poison gas. 11 13

The Anbu establish supply points, deploy search squads, guard the underground armory, and patrol the base while pursuing Han and Haku. Their operations are ultimately disrupted when Han loots the armory, plants explosives at load-bearing nodes, and collapses much of the underground base. 8 14 18 30 32 40

Following the destruction, surviving Mist Anbu seal the village, force civilians toward Central Plaza screening, and activate a village-wide Bloodline Detection Barrier to locate Han and Haku. 42 43

Appearance

Mist Anbu commonly wear standard uniforms, masks, ninja-tool pouches, and carry conventional weapons. Their presentation varies by assignment and rank.

Great Purge

The Anbu participate directly in the systematic persecution of bloodline-limit users. They refer to surviving Mizuki Clan members as “scum” and treat prisoners as targets for execution or removal. 2

During the surface purge, Anbu squads hunt kekkei genkai survivors through coordinated attacks, including explosive-tag kunai and Water Release techniques. They also surround Pakura of Sunagakure during an attempted assassination. 43 44

Underground Base Security

The underground Anbu base functions as a prison, command center, supply network, armory, and interrogation site. Its personnel use patrol routes, supply caches, encrypted communications, traps, ventilation ducts, poison-gas protocols, and reinforced sealed gates. 1 8 11 13 21 23

Death Prison Escape

The Anbu establish the immediate threat of the story by holding Mizuki Han on death row and sending a guard to execute him. Han's killing of that guard gives him the uniform and tools needed to begin his escape. 1 2

Underground Counter-Hunt

Han reverses the hunter-prey dynamic by ambushing Anbu supply personnel and search teams for equipment, chakra, and intelligence. Anbu patrols repeatedly force him to rely on traps, stealth, deception, and Haku's assistance. 7 18

Armory Raid and Base Demolition

The Anbu's planned poison-gas purge drives Han to infiltrate their armory. After securing explosives and structural blueprints, he uses the Anbu base's load-bearing design against it, causing a catastrophic collapse that destroys underground and surface facilities. 22 30 32 38 40

Village-Wide Manhunt

After the base's collapse, the Anbu impose a blockade and bloodline screening throughout the Village of the Bloody Mist. Han and Haku evade them by disguising themselves as injured civilian refugees while the purge continues around them. 42 44
