Background / History
Nazarick was the guild base of the heteromorphic guild Ainz Ooal Gown in YGGDRASIL. Its members gained notoriety for player-killing and looting equipment, helping provoke an eight-guild, 1,500-player crusade against the tomb. The invading force reached the Eighth Floor but was annihilated there. 1 24
Hahaha Hades participated in that crusade and was cornered by guild leader Momonga during the battle. His defeat, and Momonga's taunt, became the origin of Hades's long-term ambition to overthrow Nazarick. 1
At the moment of YGGDRASIL's shutdown, Nazarick was situated in Helheim's Grenbera Swamp. Hades reached its surface structures shortly before midnight but lacked the time to invade it. 2
After the shutdown, Nazarick appeared in an unknown world. Its surroundings had changed from Helheim's poisonous swamp into a region beneath a clear sky with moonlight and stars. Its NPCs became living, thinking beings while retaining absolute reverence for Momonga as their supreme ruler. 10
Structure and Defenses
- Nazarick is organized across multiple floors, with Floor Guardians serving as its principal defenders and administrators. 10
- The Eighth Floor is described as Nazarick's final defensive line; its fall would leave little chance of recovering the tomb. 3 32
- Nazarick's deeper Ninth and Tenth Floors were sufficiently secret that Hades had to purchase leaked intelligence about them from former members of the intelligence guild Burning Three Eyes. 13
- The Ninth Floor includes Sebas's domain and Albedo's association; Sebas serves as Nazarick's butler and manages the Pleiades battle maids. 10 13
- Nazarick's principal defensive strength is stated to lie in its traps rather than solely in its NPC defenders. 14
- Its defenses include stealth-capable perimeter patrols, emergency trap activation, restrictions on Guardians leaving without authorization, and protections that prevent direct teleportation into the tomb. 32 33
- Gargantua, a thirty-meter golem stationed in the Fourth Floor's underground lake, is kept inactive because Momonga considers it unsuitable for defensive warfare. 32
Inhabitants and Administration
Supreme Ruler
Momonga is recognized by Nazarick's NPCs as its supreme ruler. Although he fears that revealing his insecurity could cause their betrayal, the NPCs consistently treat him with absolute reverence. 10 11
Floor Guardians
The Floor Guardians protect their assigned areas and form Nazarick's foremost leadership beneath Momonga. Following Momonga's assassination and resurrection, their duties were reorganized around the tomb's defense. 28 32
- Albedo — Former Floor Guardian Overseer; commanded to activate maximum emergency defenses before her position was reconsidered. 32
- Demiurge — Adviser and external operative entrusted with a Ring of Ainz Ooal Gown and authority to mobilize part of Nazarick's personnel. 33 46
- Aura and Mare — Dark Elf guardians of the Sixth Floor; tasked with concealing Nazarick's surface structures and linking them to the nearby forest. 14 33 46
- Pandora — Guardian of the Treasury and Momonga's proposed replacement for the Floor Guardian Overseer position; possesses the King of the Castle class, which reduces guild maintenance costs. 32
- Rubedo — Assigned to manage Gargantua on the Fourth Floor. 32
- Shalltear — Guards the First through Third Floors and was rejected as a candidate for Floor Guardian Overseer. 32
Other Personnel
- Sebas — Guardian of the Ninth Floor, Nazarick's butler, leader of the Pleiades, and its strongest melee guardian as a Dragonoid. 10
- Pleiades — Six battle maids under Sebas's command. Their members are around level 50 and are considered more expendable reconnaissance assets than Floor Guardians. 10 49
- Eight-Edge Assassin Bugs — Fifteen stealth-capable monsters observed operating near Carne Village. 14 15
- Neuronist Painkill — A monstrous resident who tortures Enri during Demiurge's investigation. 47
Resources and Equipment
- Nazarick holds approximately 420 billion in assets. Momonga considers these resources non-renewable in the new world. 49
- Resurrecting a Floor Guardian costs 500 million gold coins, making their deployment outside the tomb a significant financial risk. 49
- Nazarick created numerous level 100 NPCs and equipped them with divine-class gear, an expenditure Hades considered unusually extravagant for guild defense. 14
- The Ring of Ainz Ooal Gown allows its bearer to act on Nazarick's behalf; Momonga grants one to Demiurge for an outside assignment. 33
- The Mirror of Remote Viewing can observe designated locations outside Nazarick, though low-level anti-intelligence magic can evade it and offensive barriers can counterattack through it. 10
Story Role / Major Arcs
Arrival in the New World
Nazarick's transfer to the new world establishes it as Momonga's only secure base and the center of his efforts to understand the unfamiliar setting. He spends his first night cataloguing its NPCs, testing its items, and learning its operations. 10
Carne Village Observation
Using the Mirror of Remote Viewing, Momonga observes the attack on Carne Village. He initially refuses to intervene because conflict with unknown local forces offers no benefit to Nazarick. 11 12
Hades's Assassination
Hades identifies Nazarick as a potential threat after seeing Momonga, Albedo, Aura, Mare, and Nazarick's assassin bugs near Carne Village. He uses his prior intelligence on the tomb to isolate Albedo and attack Momonga, exploiting the Guardians' lack of time-stop resistance. 13 15 21 25
Momonga's death and resurrection within Nazarick expose the tomb's vulnerability to a knowledgeable enemy. The incident triggers internal conflict over Albedo's responsibility and leads to an extensive defensive reorganization. 27 28 32
Emergency Fortification
In response to the assassination, Nazarick activates its traps at the highest emergency level, deploys stealth patrols over a two-kilometer perimeter, limits Guardian movement, and camouflages its surface structures. 32 46
Investigation of the Assassination
Demiurge investigates possible links between Carne Village and the attack on Momonga. His investigation leads to Enri's capture and torture, after which Momonga uses Control Amnesia to search her memories for information on the suspected enemy. 47 48
Trivia
- Hades considers Nazarick difficult to assault alone even with the World Item World Will, due to the Eighth Floor's defenses and the lack of intelligence on deeper floors. 3
- Direct teleportation into Nazarick is impossible. 33
- Momonga regards Nazarick as the creation he built alongside his former companions and is willing to defend it to the death. 47
