Background / History

Konoha declined to send reinforcements when Uzushiogakure was attacked. Its leadership judged that the village was still unstable after Tobirama’s death, lacked forces it could safely deploy, and risked exposure to the other Great Nations if it weakened its own defenses. This decision left Uzushiogakure to fall, though Konoha Anbu later recovered the survivors Qi Luna and Kushina. 1 2

Following Uzushiogakure’s destruction, Konoha brought Qi Luna and Kushina before the Third Hokage, Sarutobi Hiruzen, and placed them in Uzumaki Mito’s care at the Senju Clan Compound. The village also acquired valuable Uzumaki scrolls and sealing techniques, which its leadership intended to absorb into Konoha’s foundations rather than use as grounds for an immediate war with Sunagakure. 2

Konoha entered the Second Ninja World War after escalating tensions with Sunagakure and the threat of Iwagakure’s invasion. It fought across the Lands of Rain and Grass against Sunagakure, Amegakure, and Iwagakure forces. 8 9 12 14

The village ultimately emerged victorious, forcing Amegakure and Sunagakure to withdraw and securing greater recognition among the Five Great Nations. It subsequently hosted peace negotiations and a Joint Chunin Exam, using both events to demonstrate its military strength. 33 35 39

Destruction of Uzushiogakure

Konoha chose not to openly intervene in the assault on its Uzumaki ally, prioritizing its own security amid domestic instability and threats from rival nations. The decision created lasting resentment among some Uzumaki survivors, even as Konoha gave them refuge. 1 2

Second Ninja World War

Konoha mobilized for war after Sunagakure forces approached the Land of Fire border and Iwagakure gathered invasion forces. Its shinobi fought on several fronts, while the Hokage coordinated reinforcements from the village. 8 9 12 13

Notable wartime achievements included Hatake Sakumo’s victories against Sunagakure, the emergence of the Konoha Sannin after their battle with Salamander Hanzo, and Konoha’s eventual strategic advantage over its opponents. 14 22 24 33

Admission of the Amegakure Orphans

Qi Luna brought Nagato, Yahiko, and Konan to Konoha after the war. Hiruzen permitted them to remain, but required continuous Anbu monitoring—particularly of Nagato—and made Qi Luna personally responsible for their education and conduct. 26 28

The three were welcomed into the Senju household, where they received rooms, medical attention, and support from Qi Luna, Kushina, Mito, and Tsunade. 29

Joint Chunin Exams and Kumogakure Incident

Konoha hosted a Joint Chunin Exam attended by genin from Konoha, Kumogakure, and Iwagakure. Konoha teams dominated the competition, taking all eight quarterfinal positions. 35 37

After the exams, Kumogakure operatives infiltrated Konoha and abducted Kushina. Minato rescued her, while Konoha captured surviving infiltrators. Hiruzen used the incident to impose a harsh armistice agreement on Kumogakure, including fifty million ryo in reparations. 38 39
