Background / History

Tsunade lives at the Senju Ancestral Residence with Uzumaki Mito, where she meets Qi Luna and Kushina after their arrival in Konoha. She and her younger brother Nawaki offer the Uzumaki cousins support; Tsunade promises to personally teach Kushina techniques if she attends the Ninja Academy and warns her not to let classmates bully her. 3

On Nawaki’s twelfth birthday, Tsunade gives him the First Hokage’s necklace, believing in his potential to protect Konoha and become Hokage. 10 During the Second Shinobi World War, Nawaki is caught in an explosive-tag trap. Tsunade rushes from the Land of Rain to the Land of Grass after receiving word of his apparent death, but learns that the Life-Saving Talisman, Qi Luna’s chakra, and Minato’s ration pill preserved his life. 13

Tsunade serves on the Sunagakure front, where she develops antidotes to Chiyo’s poisons and personally uses antidotes on herself to fight high-level enemies. She later transfers command to Utatane Koharu and travels to the Amegakure front to assist Orochimaru and Jiraiya against Hanzō’s salamander toxin. 19

Following Kato Dan’s near-fatal poisoning in a Sunagakure ambush, Tsunade exhausts her chakra while extracting poison, repairing vital damage, and attempting to restart his heart. A pale golden chakra emerging from her body ultimately heals Kato’s wounds; Tsunade cannot consciously control this chakra. 31 32
