Background / History
Jiraiya appears as a Konoha jōnin instructor during the academy graduates' team assignments. He selects Namikaze Minato, Uzumaki Kushina, and Akimichi Yoshimaru as his students. His abrupt, unconcerned manner contrasts with the graduates' excitement at being assigned to him. 5
During the Second Shinobi World War, he serves among Konoha's leading forces alongside Tsunade and Orochimaru. He is initially unwilling to accept suspicions against Shimura Danzō without evidence, stopping Tsunade from confronting Danzō after Nawaki's ambush; Jiraiya argues that an unsupported accusation would only harm Konoha's morale. 12 13
Jiraiya, Tsunade, Orochimaru, and Uzumaki Qi Luna fight Salamander Hanzō together. Jiraiya ambushes Hanzō with Needle Jizō amid the toxic mist, helping turn the battle. Hanzō subsequently grants the three the title Konoha Sannin, while Qi Luna receives the title Konoha Red Peak. 24
After the battle, Jiraiya leads a Konoha squad sheltering in a cave and encounters Nagato, Yahiko, and Konan—three Amegakure war orphans. Though wary at first, he shares food with them and earns their trust. 25
Following the war, Jiraiya becomes captain of Konoha's Jōnin squad and continues to monitor Nagato because of the Great Toad Sage's prophecy. He personally tests Nagato, Yahiko, and Konan after their early graduation, then leaves the children under Qi Luna's mentorship after witnessing Nagato's potential. 42 43 44
Unable to find answers about the prophecy through administration and reports, Jiraiya resigns from his post and departs to travel across the Ninja World. He intends to investigate the prophecy, experience the world directly, and write about the soul of shinobi. 50
Appearance
Jiraiya is a tall man with long silver-white hair, red markings beneath his eyes resembling tear tracks, and a bold, untidy appearance. 5
- Long, usually disheveled white hair. 5 50
- Red eye markings. 5
- Wears a red haori in battle. 44
- Wears fishnet armor beneath an open grey-black coat. 50
Personality
Jiraiya is boisterous, theatrical, and highly conscious of his image. He calls himself a sage, boasts about his charm and strength, and reacts dramatically when Tsunade rejects him or when his reputation is threatened. 21 22 44
Beneath his unserious behavior, he is compassionate toward war orphans, protective of Konoha, and dedicated to teaching younger shinobi. His sparring lessons are severe but constructive: he identifies flaws in Yahiko, Konan, and Nagato's combat judgment while pushing them to understand teamwork and the dangers of facing stronger opponents. 25 43
He is cautious in political matters. Despite suspecting Danzō's involvement in Nawaki's ambush, he refuses to act on speculation alone. 13 His decision to leave Konoha is driven by the desire to understand the prophecy and seek another way to protect the village. 50
