Background / History

Original Akatsuki

Yahiko leads the early Akatsuki alongside Nagato and Konan. He believes Amegakure can escape its endless wars through dialogue, mutual understanding, and cooperation with Hanzo the Salamander. He hopes that peace will also free Nagato from needing to rely on the destructive power of the Rinnegan. 4

When the man posing as Uchiha Madara claims that Hanzo and Shimura Danzo are plotting to eliminate Akatsuki, Yahiko refuses to abandon his ideals. Rather than accept the accusation or assassinate Hanzo, he insists on meeting Hanzo personally to prove that their dream of peace is real. 5 7

Hanzo's Betrayal

Yahiko leads Nagato and Konan to the arranged meeting in an abandoned canyon, where Hanzo and Danzo's forces ambush them. He helps defend Nagato with Water Release after Nagato is exhausted by protecting the group from the initial explosion, but is wounded while shielding him from Root operatives. 9 10

Lin Feng, acting as Madara, intervenes before Yahiko is killed. Although this saves the trio, it also confirms that Yahiko's faith in Hanzo was misplaced and begins the collapse of his belief that understanding alone can overcome violence. 10 11

Fall of His Ideals

Yahiko is horrified when Madara engineers a massacre among Amegakure's surviving ninja and orders Nagato to kill the final victor. He attempts to stop Nagato, arguing that peace gained through slaughter is tyranny, but Konan restrains him and Nagato kills the man with Human Path: Soul Extraction. 12 13

Afterward, Yahiko rejects the Black Red-Cloud Robes as a “rebirth,” seeing them instead as proof that Akatsuki has fallen from its original purpose. Nagato and Konan nevertheless accept the robes, leaving Yahiko isolated from the two people closest to him. 15

Appearance

Yahiko is a young shinobi with orange-red hair. During Akatsuki's original period, he wears ordinary worn clothing; after the organization's transformation, he wears a Black Red-Cloud Robe despite his resistance to what it represents. 4 7 15

Personality

His strongest trait is his loyalty to Nagato and Konan. Even after his ideals are shattered and Nagato becomes emotionally distant, Yahiko follows the group because he cannot bear to let his remaining family walk into darkness alone. 18 19

The events in Amegakure leave him hollow and conflicted. He continues to condemn Madara's manipulation and Nagato's brutality, but he no longer possesses the confidence and optimism he displayed as Akatsuki's original leader. 15 16 19
