Background / History

Following Hiruzen Sarutobi's resignation, Minato was selected as Konoha's next Hokage rather than Shimura Danzo or Orochimaru. Danzo—secretly a puppet controlled by Lin Feng—publicly contested Minato's suitability, arguing that his mercy and battlefield reputation did not make him capable of leading Konoha through its crisis. The Daimyo initially postponed the succession, but Minato was ultimately inaugurated as the Fourth Hokage; Danzo and Fugaku Uchiha became his assistants. 19 21 22 34

During Obito's Nine-Tails attack, Minato rescued his newborn son Naruto and fought Obito with Flying Raijin and Rasengan, breaking Obito's control over the Nine-Tails. He and Kushina then prepared to sacrifice themselves with the Dead Demon Consuming Seal. 35

Lin Feng, posing as Uchiha Madara, interrupted the ritual and supplied a means to divide the Nine-Tails' chakra. Minato sealed its Yin half back into Kushina and its Yang half into Naruto with the Eight Trigrams Sealing Style, preserving both their lives. Hiruzen subsequently classified Madara's intervention as an S-rank secret. 36 37

Personality

Minato is composed and principled under political pressure. When Danzo asked whether he could sacrifice one hundred villagers to save Konoha, Minato rejected the premise, stating that he would sacrifice himself before allowing such a choice. 22

As Hokage, he favors measured, evidence-based responses over immediate retaliation. He works with Fugaku and the Anbu during the Hyuga kidnapping crisis, seeks to expose Kumogakure's deception rather than be provoked by it, and attempts to restrain infighting among Konoha's leadership. 39 40 41

He carries deep guilt over Obito's apparent death and Rin's loss. Even after learning that Obito orchestrated the Nine-Tails Incident, Minato tries to appeal to him as his former student. 42 43
