Chapter Twelve
"Remember, the Seed of Life is the foundation of us Nature Wizards. You must keep it safe..."
Rosalind's voice was gentle, but before she could finish, her beautiful eyes narrowed suddenly, fixing on a flower in the corner.
The flower was swaying gently, as though summoned by something unseen.
"Hm?"
She frowned slightly and stepped toward the flower. Her fair hand lightly touched its petals as she closed her eyes.
A moment later, she opened them, her expression turning solemn.
"That will be all for today. Colin, take Lynn to find the essential books. I have some matters to attend to, and I fear I'll be busy for a while..."
Naturally, Rosalind had not forgotten that Lynn was a complete newcomer. Every apprentice and wizard in The Furnace had to contribute their share to keep it running.
"As for Lynn's work, put his name down under my Potion Garden. Colin, help him get familiar with things..."
Rosalind was remarkably decisive, arranging Lynn's affairs in just a few words.
Of course, that was also because the most important step—choosing a Seed of Life for Lynn—had already been completed. Otherwise, Rosalind would not have felt so comfortable leaving everything to Colin.
Watching Rosalind hurry away, Lynn and Colin exchanged helpless looks.
"Teacher really leaves in a hurry... But now the trouble has landed on my head."
Colin shrugged helplessly and led Lynn through the living room toward the basement door.
The basement door was tightly shut, its surface entwined with thorn-like plants that firmly sealed off the passage.
"Knowledge and books are every wizard's most precious treasures."
As Colin explained, he lightly knocked on the door. "Of course, only Official Wizards can afford to build a library with a sufficiently rich collection. Wizard Apprentices like us can only access basic material. Being allowed into an Official Wizard's library is an extremely rare opportunity."
Lynn listened carefully to Colin's explanation. Although he was still far from becoming an Official Wizard,
he learned much about this entirely new Wizard World from Colin's words.
"Every wizard's library is protected by layer upon layer of defenses. Fortunately, Teacher gave us permission just now. Come on, let's go down."
Sure enough, when Colin lightly knocked on the door, the thorns upon it slowly withdrew. Then the door opened, revealing a path leading underground.
These were no ordinary stairs. The steps were woven from thick plant roots, each one seemingly writhing on its own, as though alive.
Lynn's heart tightened as he secretly guessed that Rosalind had designed this library with extreme care. It probably concealed traps and defensive mechanisms unknown to outsiders.
Under Colin's lead, Lynn entered the library. Books and flowers intertwined all around them, and the entire space was filled with a faint floral fragrance mixed with the ancient scent of ink, as though they had entered a sanctuary of knowledge.
Once inside the underground library, Lynn was astonished by the sight before him.
The collection here was extraordinarily extensive. Rows upon rows of books were neatly arranged on the shelves, and each bookshelf was guarded by a unique flower.
These flowers were not mere decorations. They seemed to possess some sort of protective function, giving off an air of mystery that could not be taken lightly.
Lynn noticed that only the flowers on a few bookshelves had lowered their guard. Clearly, those were the areas Rosalind had specifically arranged for him and Colin.
"Hehehe, little brother, come on, let's have some fun~~"
"What are you looking at?! I'll eat you!"
"Hmph!"
Lynn followed Colin onward, his gaze occasionally sweeping over the flowers guarding the bookshelves.
Strangely, some flowers would suddenly form a pair of eyes and stare fixedly at Lynn, leaving him momentarily stunned.
They seemed to be communicating with him. Some even swayed gently, as if provoking him.
"Don't mind them. Just treat them like air."
Colin had clearly grown accustomed to this. He seemed entirely unfazed by the flowers' harassment as he pulled several books from the shelves and handed them to Lynn.
"Introduction to Nature Wizards."
"From Nature Novice to Master of the Earth!"
"Travels of Life."
Lynn accepted the books, sensing the aura of knowledge contained within them.
Colin continued explaining:
"Becoming Teacher's disciple is indeed a fortunate thing. Those two guys who came with you earlier—even if they have backers—could never receive as much material as you have so directly."
"In The Furnace, if you want resources, you have to put in the effort. Everyone needs to work. Only by earning Furnace points through work can you exchange them for resources."
As Colin flipped through the books, he explained to Lynn,
"However, relying solely on work to earn points for knowledge would probably take a very long time. Wizard Apprentices also need points to exchange for cultivation resources. If you spend all your points on books, your cultivation progress may be slowed."
Lynn listened intently. These explanations of The Furnace's rules were extremely important to him. After all, he was a complete newcomer who knew almost nothing about this world.
"Oh, right. Besides work and missions, you can also exchange Magic Stones for points. The rate is roughly one to one: one Magic Stone for one point."
Colin paused, then turned to Lynn. "If you have Magic Stones, you can exchange them for points. Magic Stones have value in The Furnace, but they're also easy to steal. Points, on the other hand, are harder to lose."
Lynn spread his hands helplessly, indicating that he had nothing at all. He had just entered the Wizard World and did not even have a single Magic Stone.
"Sigh, I knew it..."
Seeing Lynn's expression, Colin could not help smiling helplessly. "I was hoping to get a little tip out of you."
He shook his head again and continued,
"Still, everyone's work in The Furnace has value. If I were guiding and explaining things to other newcomers, I could earn at least a few points or Magic Stones in tips over the course of a day. But since this is Teacher's order, I can only help you for free."
Though he said that, Colin still followed Rosalind's instructions. After seriously helping Lynn collect the books, he began guiding him around the Living District of The Furnace.
Colin was extremely thorough in his work. As he led Lynn along, he explained some everyday knowledge about life inside The Furnace and introduced the functions of its various areas.
Though Lynn still felt somewhat lost inside, hearing these details benefited him greatly.
At last, Lynn's work assignment was settled as well.
Everyone in The Furnace had to work. Even Rosalind's disciples, such as Colin, had to serve as receptionists in the Processing Hall of the Living District.
Of course, receptionist work was not bad. It even required a certain level of strength to handle, and Colin did not dislike it.
However, Lynn was ultimately a complete newcomer, entirely unfamiliar with the Wizard World.
Therefore, Rosalind arranged for Lynn to work under her watchful eye as a form of protection for him.
