Chapter Thirty-Four
The first wave of apprentices from The Furnace surged toward Night Shadow Bunker like a tide, charging straight at the black Sky Curtain.
Night Shadow Bunker remained unusually calm, making no move to use long-range sorcery to halt their assault.
Only when the Furnace Apprentices successfully broke through the Sky Curtain in the flesh and entered Night Shadow Bunker's territory did the situation begin to change.
Night Shadow Bunker's Anti-Energy Array displayed tremendous power, making the negative energy particles here far denser than those outside.
The instant the apprentices rushed through the Sky Curtain, negative energy from all around rapidly converged. Then waves of Necromancy and Negative Energy Sorcery erupted, launching a savage assault on the intruders.
High in the air, Astrid stood atop Black Dragon's back, calmly watching the battle. Her violet eyes seemed capable of seeing across immense distances.
Her gaze remained fixed on the situation within the Sky Curtain.
Night Shadow Bunker had been storing up this round of attacks for a long time, and its explosive force was terrifying.
Yet Astrid was slightly surprised that this wave of attacks had not inflicted casualties on the charging Furnace Apprentices as severe as she had expected.
She saw that although the negative energy assault had caused widespread chaos, nearly sixty percent of the apprentices had still managed to break through the Sky Curtain and enter Night Shadow Bunker.
A faint smile appeared on her face.
"These apprentices trained by Official Wizards really aren't bad. They're much stronger than ordinary apprentices."
"If we'd had them when we broke open the Bitter Heart Sect's array, we probably could have swept through everything on the first day."
Yet the more impressive they proved to be, the colder Astrid's gaze became.
After all, if she had not personally returned to The Furnace and forcibly summoned these wizards' students, they would probably still be hiding inside The Furnace right now.
"Though their teachers are wizards, they are still apprentices of The Furnace. If they won't even take part in the Furnace War, what's the point of keeping them? If they can't work for me, they might as well die here!"
The survival rate of The Furnace's first charge was high, which was a good thing. At the very least, the apprentices charging in afterward would not be immediately swept to death by successive waves of sorcery.
"Second wave, charge!"
Before long, The Furnace's second wave of apprentices swiftly reinforced the ranks and pushed forward.
Faced with Night Shadow Bunker's powerful anti-energy sorcery, The Furnace's plan was simple: use one body after another to forcibly pile up a path of blood.
An Official Wizard of Night Shadow Bunker stood at the front lines, watching the desperately charging apprentices with sharp eyes. Slightly surprised, he murmured:
"Hm? So many actually survived. It seems these Furnace Apprentices really are of decent quality. No wonder they were trained by a Level 4 Faction."
Though there was only one realm of difference between Level 3 Wizards and Level 4 Wizards, that gap was reflected not only in strength, but also in status and resources.
A Level 4 Faction was also far beyond the comparison of a Level 3 Faction.
"Wait a little longer. Too few apprentices have died so far. It isn't worth using that sorcery yet."
There was a trace of coldness in the Official Wizard's voice. He was clearly waiting for a more suitable moment.
Lynn blended into the army of Furnace Apprentices and charged toward the increasingly close Sky Curtain.
By now, he had already put some distance between himself and Colin and Sonia.
After all, according to his and Colin's plan, their priority from here on was to control the battle as much as possible and avoid charging directly at the enemy.
If he stayed mixed in with a crowd, he would be too conspicuous and might easily be exposed for throwing the fight.
"Kill!"
Ahead, several waves of apprentices had successfully expanded the front line. In some places, Furnace Apprentices had even begun close-quarters combat with Night Shadow Bunker's warriors.
Keeping Colin's hint firmly in mind, Lynn did not think about fleeing, but his eyes continued to scan the battlefield for a suitable place to "throw the fight."
Suddenly, an Official Wizard rose into the air from Night Shadow Bunker's side, chanting under his breath.
Immediately afterward, a dense aura of death swept across the entire battlefield.
A gale rose, blowing Lynn's hood away and making his robe flap wildly.
But the storm did not disrupt him. His gaze sharpened at once, and the surrounding scene gradually became clear.
The corpses across the battlefield, whole or broken, began to tremble strangely.
Then they rose to their feet one after another, charging at the Furnace Apprentices like soulless puppets.
"Undead? Or zombies? But they don't seem able to use sorcery..."
Lynn dodged an apprentice corpse lunging at him and rapidly analyzed the situation.
Though these corpses had no sorcerous abilities, they were still no small threat as zombies.
After all, a massive tide of corpses would be enough to severely disrupt the apprentices' casting rhythm.
"Smash the corpses! Smash the bodies of any apprentices who die beside you too!"
A Level 3 Wizard Apprentice shouted, quickly warning the companions around him.
Lynn swiftly assessed the situation and continued weaving nimbly through the battlefield.
These corpses were not very fast, while his physique had been enhanced after breaking through to Level 2 Wizard Apprentice, reaching 3 points.
Under such circumstances, he only needed to evade them to stall for quite a long time, which perfectly suited his current plan.
However, just then, an abrupt voice rang out, carrying a trace of joy and surprise.
"Lynn! It really is you! Save me!"
Lynn frowned. The voice was both familiar and unfamiliar.
He dodged a corpse pouncing at him, then turned to look. He saw a Wizard Apprentice wearing an expression of shock and wild delight, with three corpses hot on his heels.
"White? The one who was hanging around with Riley that day?"
Lynn's thoughts stirred as he quickly recalled the other's identity.
It was White who had called out his name back then, making Riley remember him.
The grudge between them had not yet been settled, and now White was actually trying to shift trouble onto him.
"White. Mental Power: 7. Physique: 2."
"So he's only a First-Level Wizard Apprentice. His luck really isn't bad, surviving until now..."
After scanning White's basic information with the Crystal Ball, a dangerous glint faintly flashed in Lynn's eyes. He then began chanting an incantation in a low voice.
"Lynn, help me deal with them! I have orders from The Furnace!"
White's elation was obvious. Thinking he had finally found a lifeline, he rushed eagerly toward Lynn.
Yet Lynn's preparations had long been complete.
"Ice Arrow!"
When White saw the Ice Arrow take shape, his face filled with delight. In his heart, he had already begun rejoicing at encountering a savior.
But in the next instant, the Ice Arrow shot out abruptly, piercing straight through White's chest.
The Ice Arrow's sharp, icy force tore White and the three pursuing corpses behind him into pieces.
"There was no grudge between us, but both times, you insisted on coming after me yourself. So you can't blame me."
There was not a trace of guilt in Lynn's eyes. He even seemed calm and regretful, regretting the bit of mental power he had spent on Ice Arrow.
Though Ice Arrow did not consume much mental power, that strike had still wasted a bit of his mental power for nothing.
He was about to leave when his gaze suddenly sharpened.
Among the scattered fragments of White's corpse, a fist-sized yellow crystal unexpectedly emerged, giving off a faint glow.
"What is this..."
