Background / History

Horcruxes and fragmented existence

A fragment of Voldemort’s soul resides in Ravenclaw’s Diadem, concealed in the Room of Requirement. It initially tempts Devero with “endless wisdom,” but Devero resists its influence through meditation and examines it indirectly. The fragment possesses exceptional Dark Arts talent, including unrivaled proficiency in the Killing, Imperius, and Cruciatus Curses. 33 34

The Diadem fragment is unusually communicative and curious about the future. After Devero tells it of Voldemort’s failure, it remains calm rather than openly hostile, offers to teach Devero spells, and leaves him a scarf that grants the Disillusionment Charm. 35 36

The fragment later escapes the Room of Requirement and manifests through a plaster statue. Dumbledore explains that this phenomenon is linked to the unstable resurrection of a Hogwarts founder, Professor Ravenclaw, whose existence inherited a portion of Voldemort’s soul remnants. 145 146

Possession, recruitment, and rebirth

Voldemort initially survives by possessing Professor Quirrell. In this state, his panel identifies him as physically maimed but sustained by his Gold-tier Undying Body trait. 37

After leaving Quirrell, Voldemort manipulates Marcus Flint into serving him. He uses the Imperius Curse as his intended method of forcing Devero’s recruitment and teaches Marcus an enhanced Fiendfyre Snake Curse. 83 85

Peter Pettigrew and Severus Snape later complete a cauldron ritual that restores Voldemort’s physical body. Immediately after returning, Voldemort directs Wormtail, sends a silver thread toward Hogwarts, and declares his intention to teach Devero “a lesson.” 192

Battle with Devero and sealing

Voldemort orchestrates werewolf incidents at Hogwarts and confronts Devero directly. He frames werewolves, threatens that more students will transform, and attempts to overpower Devero through Dark Arts, transfiguration, Legilimency, Fiendfyre, and alchemical defenses. 195 200 204

During the battle, Voldemort drinks from Hufflepuff’s Cup and gains extreme vitality from the Fountain of Life. The enhancement prevents Devero’s repeated Killing Curses from killing him, though Devero eventually overwhelms him with Killing Curse: Decay. 203 204 206
