Background / History
Lupin was infected by a werewolf carrying lycanthropy and did not receive prompt treatment. Every full moon, he transforms into a highly aggressive werewolf with increased speed, strength, and resistance to magic; without a target, he is prone to self-harm. His condition and social exclusion left him impoverished, homeless, and reluctant to form close relationships. 246 249
While recalling his time as a Gryffindor student, Lupin admits that he feared closeness because he was different from his peers. Though he eventually made friends, he continued to associate his condition with fear and self-loathing. 249
Referred by Dumbledore, Lupin came to Hogwarts seeking Snape's treatment and the developing Wolfsbane Potion. Devero recognized him immediately and offered him work in the laboratory; Lupin accepted the position as Snape's teaching assistant and began assisting the research project. 247 248
Although Devero repeatedly offered treatment, Lupin delayed beginning it. He feared that becoming “normal” would leave him isolated, purposeless, or unable to adjust to a life no longer shaped by lycanthropy. 249 250 He nevertheless remained with the project, citing Dumbledore and Snape's support as well as his own enjoyment of teaching and discussing magic with students. 257
Appearance
When he first arrived at Hogwarts, Lupin appeared exhausted and worn down by poverty and travel. 247
- Threadbare robes and a battered suitcase bound with rope. 247
- A weary face and cautious, measured movements. 247
- Later wore newly transfigured robes after Devero refurbished his belongings. 249
Personality
Lupin is cautious, polite, and deeply conscientious. He initially approaches Devero's work with guarded hope, but becomes a diligent assistant who carefully checks ingredients, research records, samples, and presentation materials. 247 248 257 277
His lycanthropy has left him insecure about his future and wary of intimacy, yet he is protective when others are endangered. He repeatedly warns Devero away from Knockturn Alley, helps shelter Fleur during the exhibition attack, and is willing to risk himself rather than abandon Devero, Hermione, or Ron. 249 261 338 356
Lupin also has a dry, teasing rapport with Devero. He calls out Devero's reckless jokes and mysterious behavior, while tolerating Devero's habit of treating him as the dependable colleague who makes “slacking off” possible. 257 259
