Background / History

Lupin was infected by a werewolf carrying lycanthropy and did not receive prompt treatment. Every full moon, he transforms into a highly aggressive werewolf with increased speed, strength, and resistance to magic; without a target, he is prone to self-harm. His condition and social exclusion left him impoverished, homeless, and reluctant to form close relationships. 246 249

While recalling his time as a Gryffindor student, Lupin admits that he feared closeness because he was different from his peers. Though he eventually made friends, he continued to associate his condition with fear and self-loathing. 249
