|---|---|---|
| Nen awakening | 211 | Awakened a Nen ability by using the special nature of his bloodline and “discard[ing] everything” in exchange for power capable of killing the Phantom Troupe. Its specific form is not described. 211 |
Background
During the Kurta Clan massacre, twelve-year-old Kurapika led younger children into a mountain cave, instructed them to assume new identities and survive if he did not return, then remained behind to delay the attackers. He encountered Phantom Troupe members Uvogin and Nobunaga while hiding in a hollow tree. 62
Coleman intervened against the attackers and later intimidated Kurapika to test whether his resolve to take revenge would break. Kurapika refused to abandon his clan, declaring that he would avenge them. Coleman gave him money, a bracelet, and a white rose before leaving. 65
Coleman's intervention allowed dozens of Kurta children to survive. By the time Kurapika becomes an adult, those children are attending school, while measures arranged before Coleman's departure remove the Scarlet Eyes from the world's Seven Most Beautiful Things and restrict the human-organ trade. 86 231
Appearance
Kurapika is a blond youth with ordinarily brown eyes. Emotional agitation—particularly anything involving the Phantom Troupe or his clan—can turn his eyes scarlet. As director, he replaces the clothing he once wore as a symbol of his people with an expensive custom suit. 85 119 231
- Blond hair and brown eyes in his ordinary state. 85
- Scarlet eyes that surface during intense anger or distress. 119 211
- Uses twin wooden batons in combat. 176
- Later wears a custom-made suit and an expensive watch selected by Manster. 231
Personality
Kurapika is compassionate, responsible, and driven by a firm belief that evil should be opposed rather than ignored. His conduct during the massacre and his willingness to protect others reflect a habit of placing their safety above his own. 62 86
His desire to avenge the Kurta Clan is equally central to him. News of the Phantom Troupe repeatedly destabilizes him, causing his scarlet-eyed state to emerge and threatening to overwhelm his judgment. He recognizes this weakness but remains unwilling to abandon the idea of personally delivering justice to the people responsible. 102 119 209 211
He is also diligent and perceptive. Kurapika identifies the properties of Raging Wave Scar Butterfly pollen, notices inconsistencies in Coleman's methods, and later handles the complex work of an intelligence agency despite finding administration mentally exhausting. 131 231
