Background / History
Coleman is the Zoldyck Family's second son and Illumi Zoldyck's twin. Though they have contrasting hair and eye colors, their faces, height, and voices are nearly identical. Coleman developed an intensely possessive attachment to Illumi from childhood, viewing his brother as something he wished to keep solely for himself. 1 158
He deliberately shaped his outward behavior around Kikyo Zoldyck's preference for strong, gifted, ruthless children. Coleman considers much of his conduct to be performance, using dependence and possessiveness to keep Illumi close without provoking Illumi's need for complete control. 42
From an early age, Coleman treated murder as artistic creation. He arranges victims, cleans and poses their bodies, photographs the results, and gives his works titles. His grandfather Zeno removed his inheritance rights after sensing the bloodlust within Coleman's constantly shifting red eyes, though Zeno continued to indulge his fascination with “art.” 1 32 47
When Illumi was trapped by dozens of enemies at age fourteen, Coleman released the full deterrent power of his red eyes in fear and anger. The incident reinforced the family's concern that he was an unstable successor. 47
Coleman warned the Kurta Clan that their village had failed to notice him entering and that protection from others could not last forever. Later, he viewed the clan massacre as an opportunity to cultivate an avenger and admitted that he had played a part in the tragedy surrounding Kurapika. 18 64 133
Appearance
Coleman is a handsome white-haired young man with violet eyes, though his eyes can become scarlet or display crimson patterns when his powers and bloodlust surface. He maintains a polished, gentlemanly image and is notably particular about dirt or damage to his clothing. 50 89 145 206
- Silver-white, usually short hair; his real appearance is distinctive enough to appear on bounty notices. 50 145
- Violet eyes under ordinary circumstances; red eyes and crimson light manifest during heightened power or loss of restraint. 89 147 206
- Frequently wears white shirts, trousers, leather shoes, suits, or tailored coats. 50 91 145
- Uses numerous disguises, including the black-haired, violet-eyed “Garnet” persona. 129 165
- Has a refined posture and mannerisms even while handling corpses or threatening others. 1 18
Personality
Coleman presents himself as a polite, elegant gentleman, but his courtesy is often a calculated mask. He is highly observant, manipulative, and convinced that most people can be influenced through money, fear, opportunity, or carefully chosen pressure. He believes every benefit has a price and prefers partnerships in which both parties retain practical freedom. 18 33 34 76
His artistic obsession makes him view murder, mutilation, fire, and staged violence as media for “masterpieces.” He once valued human shells and organs as artistic materials, but later claimed to value human souls, thoughts, and personalities more. His urge to kill remains difficult to control, particularly when he sees blood. 1 121 152 176
Despite his cruelty, Coleman is deeply invested in his family. He is possessive of Illumi, protective of Killua, and concerned that younger siblings may be harmed by the Zoldyck household's values. His care is often expressed through surveillance, manipulation, harsh training, or intervention rather than tenderness. 42 105 115 165
Abilities & Skills
Nen Threads — “Spider’s Nest”
Coleman manifests and controls extremely fine Nen threads for restraint, traps, mobility, body repair, and precise killing. His threads are strong enough to slice through century-old trees, though Silva can destroy them with overwhelming Nen. 47
- Creates webs and thread traps to immobilize, wound, or control opponents. 21 49 90
- Forms thread cocoons and bindings around targets, including a shell used to restrain Nanika. 47
- Uses threads with blades to secure falling people or construct improvised rescue lines. 84
- Traverses pipes and elevated terrain by swinging or attaching himself with threads. 104 126
- Temporarily stitched his severed arm back into place with threads, though the crude connection did not restore full control of the hand. 48
Assassin Combat and Tactics
Coleman is a Zoldyck-trained killer whose combat style emphasizes speed, positioning, deception, and a decisive finishing strike rather than direct confrontation. 21 115 145
- Employs Zoldyck footwork, evasive movement, ambushes, wires, knives, and traps. 21 145
- Can outpace trained Nen users, evade rapid attacks, and break or dislocate limbs while moving through a group. 145
- Uses killing intent to intimidate targets into freezing or surrendering. 39 65 176
- Prefers indirect combat; Hisoka notes that Coleman instinctively retreats, chooses a favorable position, and aims for a single lethal strike when pressured head-on. 115
- Has experience with poisons and poisoned blades, but Illumi considers at least one of Coleman's toxins low-grade. 157
- Is unable to properly use a curved blade, a weakness Illumi exploits during their duel. 157
Disguises and Impersonation
Coleman is a skilled actor who conceals his identity through changed appearances, voices, mannerisms, and fabricated personal histories. 4 85 129
- Can alter his voice, including producing a convincing feminine voice. 4
- Uses a disguise ring to change his visible appearance. 165
- Maintains multiple “skins” and discards an identity once it has been recognized. 85
- Portrayed “Garnet” as a mild, unreliable, black-haired tech enthusiast whose apparent weakness contrasted with Coleman's real abilities. 129
- Uses social charm and tailored personas to obtain information and build influence. 50 125
Demonic Flame and Curse Power
Coleman developed a destructive flame ability after being ambushed outside Ding Fort Prison. He keeps its properties secret and trains to make his Nen appear ordinary. 144
- Demonic Flame burns Nen and was stated to be capable of killing powerful opponents; Coleman used it to reduce four bounty hunters to ashes. 144
- Curse Flame can consume lingering Nen within a fire to restore Coleman's damaged body. 205
- A Lord of Curses seeks to manipulate him through curse power and the curse core. Coleman instead bargains with and deceives the curse's manifestations for his own objectives. 206 219
- An evil god dwelling within him can seize partial control of his body and manifests through crimson light, blood-red markings, and immense killing intent. 206
- Coleman considers the curse and evil god usable bargaining chips rather than allies he fully trusts. 216
