Background / History
Aizen had long prepared to take control of Hueco Mundo, intending to use powerful Hollows as experimental subjects and tools in his effort to transcend the limits of Soul Reapers. Dunn's appearance disrupted that plan: Dunn's unfamiliar power, overwhelming strength, and knowledge of Aizen forced him to alter his timetable and treat the newcomer as both a threat and an object of study 445.
Within Seireitei, Aizen cultivated the image of a warm, gentle captain. His reputation made the Fifth Division particularly desirable to recruits, while his outward kindness concealed active calculations about how to test Dunn without wasting useful pawns 449.
After Dunn disclosed that the Hōgyoku was connected to Rukia Kuchiki, Aizen recognized the lead he had been missing and accelerated his scheme. He later used his battle with the Captain-Commander in Karakura Town to draw attention away from Kaname Tōsen's mission to seize Orihime 462 463 484 486.
Aizen ultimately fused with the Hōgyoku using Rukia and Orihime's powers. Though he obtained what he sought, the success brought him no joy 488. When Dunn exposed the Soul King's manipulation, Aizen reacted with betrayal and disgust, then refused Dunn's offer to become the world's god because he wanted to leave that world 494 495.
Following the world's reset, Aizen encountered his earlier self in Hueco Mundo. Rather than replace his past self, he used Kyōka Suigetsu to hypnotize that Aizen, Gin, and Tōsen, then remained behind after Dunn left the world in his hands 496.
Appearance
Aizen initially presents himself as a bespectacled captain with a warm, gentle smile. When he stops maintaining that restrained image in battle, he removes his glasses and slicks back his hair 449 458.
- Wears glasses while maintaining his captain persona 449.
- Has a composed, gentle expression that frequently masks his real intentions 449.
- Removes his glasses and brushes back his hair when fighting seriously 458.
- After fusing with the Hōgyoku, can appear encased in a white shell of solidified spiritual pressure 491.
Personality
Aizen is intensely curious about unknown powers, especially anything that could help him surpass Soul Reapers. Dunn's strength does not merely alarm him; it compels him to revise his plans, research unfamiliar abilities, and seek cooperation even while remaining wary of what Dunn knows about him 445 449 457.
He is calculating and highly deceptive. Aizen maintains a benevolent captain's persona, uses allies and enemies as pieces in larger plans, and is willing to arrange a captain's grave injury as a distraction. Even when openly challenging the Captain-Commander, he treats the battle as cover for Tōsen's separate objective 449 463 484 486.
Despite his control-oriented nature, Aizen recognizes superior force. He exercises caution around Dunn, accommodates Dunn's demands, and eventually accepts that Dunn's power is beyond his ability to overcome alone 459 461 492.
Abilities & Skills
Kyōka Suigetsu
Aizen's Zanpakutō grants complete hypnosis, allowing him to fabricate a flawless false reality for those under its effect.
- Controls all five senses of hypnotized targets 459.
- Hypnotizes Soul Reapers during the Hueco Mundo confrontation, leaving them motionless while they perceive an altered reality 457 459.
- Uses illusions to escape Seireitei and deceive Byakuya Kuchiki 474.
- Hypnotizes his past self, Gin Ichimaru, and Kaname Tōsen after the world's reset 496.
- Aizen chose Kyōka Suigetsu's utility over using Bankai; activating Bankai would release his Shikai ability 459.
Spiritual Pressure and Swordsmanship
Aizen possesses captain-class combat ability that he deliberately concealed before openly fighting the Captain-Commander.
- Releases spiritual pressure powerful enough to violently disturb the surrounding Reishi 458.
- Uses Flash Step and rapid multi-directional sword attacks against Dunn 457 458.
- Blocks the Captain-Commander's initial slash without visible strain 484.
- Trades sword strikes and Kidō with the Captain-Commander while both restrain their full power 485.
- His ordinary blade strikes cannot injure Dunn's hardened skin, even when Aizen uses his full strength in that state 458.
Bankai
Aizen has mastered Bankai but ordinarily does not use it.
- Confirms that he possesses another power he cannot employ while retaining Kyōka Suigetsu's Shikai ability 459.
- Prioritizes complete hypnosis because he considers it more useful than Bankai 459.
Hōgyoku Fusion
After acquiring the Hōgyoku, Aizen gains a major increase in power and resilience.
- Fuses with the Hōgyoku through Rukia and Orihime's powers 488.
- Manifests spiritual pressure in solid form around his body 491.
- Regenerates while resisting Dunn's flames, though the damage repeatedly carbonizes parts of his body 493.
