Background / History
Li Yi brings Ryujin Jakka into the shinobi world during his transmigration. At first, he cannot release it and suspects that his soul must grow stronger before he can hear its call. The blade absorbs wisps of soul energy from the dead, with stronger souls providing greater energy 1 6 11 31 39.
After the death of the Two-Tails’ jinchūriki, Li Yi hears Ryujin Jakka name itself in a burning inner world. He first releases it while facing the Third Raikage. Later, repeated battles against its manifested fire-dragon spirit lead to his Bankai 38 39 40 86 92.
In Soul Society, Ryujin Jakka is recognized as Yamamoto’s missing Zanpakutō. Li Yi’s demonstration of both releases helps establish his claim to become Captain-Commander 204 205 207.
Appearance
Ryujin Jakka is a long blade whose visible form changes with its release state 39 40 92.
- Sealed: A sharp sword carried by Li Yi 6.
- Shikai: Flames wreath the blade 40.
- Bankai: Its outward flames withdraw, leaving a blade resembling a charred wooden stick with wisps of smoke 92.
Abilities & Skills
Soul-energy absorption
- Absorbs wisps of soul energy from people killed by its blade; Li Yi also brings it near the recently dead to collect unreaped energy 11 23 39.
- Stronger souls provide more energy. This accumulation enables Li Yi to hear the blade’s name and later strengthens its flames 31 39 78.
- Striking people revived through Impure World Reincarnation releases their souls, though Li Yi receives only a small amount of energy from them 87.
Shikai
The release command is “Reduce all creation to ash, Ryujin Jakka.” Its flames come from the Zanpakutō itself, not Li Yi’s Mera Mera no Mi ability 40.
- Taimatsu: Creates a fire tornado; Li Yi uses it to incinerate a sensory ninja before the Third Raikage can intervene 40.
- Jokaku Enjo: Forms enclosing flames like giant hands to trap an enemy 39 72.
- Ennetsu Jigoku: Raises multiple pillars of fire that converge and explode across a wide area 99.
- Limit: Its techniques consume substantial chakra. Before Ryujin Jakka grows stronger, Li Yi cannot reach the Shikai flame temperature he expects without supplementing it with his other fire power 40 78.
Bankai: Zanka no Tachi
Zanka no Tachi seals Ryujin Jakka’s flames into its blade. Its heat begins evaporating moisture nearby; when Li Yi activates it in the Seireitei, Kyoraku Shunsui asks him to put it away because of the danger it poses to the surrounding water 92 204.
- East — Kyokujitsujin: Concentrates heat at the blade’s tip, erasing what it touches without an outward explosion. Li Yi uses it against a Lava Style defense and Tailed Beast Bombs 96.
- North — Tenchi Kaijin: Sends an extremely fast, long-range slash that reduces what it strikes to ash 99 171.
Properties against Ōtsutsuki techniques
- The sealed blade cuts through Jigen’s Black Receivers 155 175.
- Jigen cannot absorb Ryujin Jakka’s flames as ninjutsu, and his attempt to shrink the blade fails because the Zanpakutō has a soul 156 175.
- Ryujin Jakka absorbs Ōtsutsuki Isshiki when he attempts to possess Li Yi 157.
Relationships
- Li Yi — Its wielder, who develops its releases through accumulated soul energy and combat with its spirit 39 86 92.
- Yamamoto Genryūsai Shigekuni — Identified in Soul Society as Ryujin Jakka’s previous owner 204 207.
- Uchiha Madara — Recognizes the sword from his encounter with Li Yi and praises it as a remarkable weapon 78 194.
