Background / History

Dan is a youth of the Katō family, a noble clan of the Land of Fire with close ties to the Daimyō Palace. The Third Hokage assigns Li Yi to mentor him because the family's political and financial support is important to Konoha. Dan arrives hoping to become an all-around ninja and reveals affinities for Fire, Wind, and Earth Release. 66

During his first evaluation at Training Ground No. 9, Dan uses the Katō clan's Spirit Transformation Technique after conventional attacks fail to touch Li Yi. Li Yi can see and repel his soul with spiritual pressure, exposing the technique's shortcomings. Dan later brings Li Yi the clan technique so it can be improved, and Li Yi trains him in earnest thereafter. 66 67 68

Over the next six months, Dan rapidly grows into a Special Jōnin. He develops a relationship with Tsunade and competes with Jiraiya, whom he challenges to a duel. Though Dan uses Fire Style, taijutsu, the Rasengan, and Shuriken Shadow Clone Technique effectively, Jiraiya defeats him through greater combat experience. 69 70

During Hanzo's confrontation with the Konoha Sannin, Dan is accidentally killed. Rather than immediately enter the Pure Land, his soul remains behind because he wants to protect Tsunade one last time.
