Wang Chong served for more than ten years in the border army, where Cheng Lianshan was his centurion. His military service left him with extensive battlefield experience, but his martial training later stagnated at a bottleneck; he considers his age and condition poor prospects for further progress. 19 27

His service included fighting barbarians at the frontier. When resisting advice to rest after his later injuries, he recalls having once taken two arrows to the chest without going down. 12 32

At the beginning of the story, Wang Chong responds to the alarm over bandit infiltration with an armed militia squad. By inspecting the intruders' clothing, weapons, and palm calluses, he identifies them as bandit scouts; the captured scout reveals that four men had entered Shuang'an Town by two routes. 4

During the Clear Wind Stronghold ambush, he breaks out with Chen Jing instead of remaining with the doomed caravan, selects defensible terrain to eliminate pursuers, and teaches Chen Jing how to evade detection. 22 23

Despite his practical outlook, Wang Chong refuses to abandon people when he sees a viable chance to save them. During the nighttime escape through the mountains, he intervenes against two bandits pursuing an injured escort rather than leaving the man to die. 24

He is also stubborn and reckless regarding his own wellbeing. Despite a damaged breastbone and medical advice to rest, he insists on returning to Shuang'an Town once he judges the road safe. 26 32

Wang Chong arrives with an armed militia squad after the alarm is raised over intruders in Shuang'an Town. He identifies the dead men as bandit scouts from their equipment and callused hands, while interrogation of a captured scout reveals that four bandits had infiltrated the town by two routes. 4

Training the Shuang'an Town Militia

Wang Chong introduces Chen Jing and other recruits to the Fierce Tiger Stance, then adds spear and staff drills to build a usable town militia. 5 6

As bandit activity escalates, he transforms Shuang'an Town's defenses through expanded training, improvised weapons, fortifications, and recruitment. 12

After the bandits are scattered, nearly half of the temporarily recruited men stop attending, leaving forty or fifty participants, mostly longstanding veterans and a smaller number of dedicated youths. As peace returns, Wang Chong reduces training to every other day to maintain their condition. 17 19

Defense of Creek River Village

When warned that bandits are lying in wait outside Creek River Village, Wang Chong immediately orders the bell rung, assembles the available militia, and has the men bring their weapons. 8

Before entering the village, he directs the fighters to operate in pairs and watch one another's backs. 9

Wang Chong leads militia members into Creek River Village to fight the roving bandits attacking it. After the battle, he continues searching the village for remaining enemies while entrusting the injured Chen Jing with guarding Butcher Zhang. 10

Though the militia drives away the attackers, the village suffers severe losses. Wang Chong arranges for its survivors to be taken to Shuang'an Town and becomes increasingly angered by the county yamen's failure to address the bandit crisis. 11

Six Gates' Night Raid

When Li Dingfang requests elite local support, Wang Chong carefully selects experienced militiamen and recruits Chen Jing due to his unusually rapid progress, combat experience, and steadiness under pressure. 13

Li's intelligence places roughly two hundred bandits around Shuang'an Town on three sides. Wang agrees to lead forty elite militiamen alongside the nine Six Gates officers in a night attack on the bandit chief's position, placing the operation under Li's command. 13

He leads the militia into the camp with his iron spear, ordering the men to hold formation as they break through the defenders. 14

He fights in the raid alongside Six Gates and Chen Jing. During the battle, Chen Jing intercepts a Ghost-Head Blade wielder and saves Wang Chong from a lethal flank attack. 15

Afterward, Wang Chong returns to town, informs the families of fallen volunteers, and ensures compensation is issued. 16

Rewarding Chen Jing

Wang Chong distributes the imperial rewards for suppressing bandits: twenty taels of silver and a Blood-Qi Pill for each qualifying militia member. 17

He later gives Chen Jing his own Blood-Qi Pill, explaining that it would be wasted on his stalled cultivation but could help a talented youth advance. 18 19

After Butcher Zhang's death, Wang offers Chen Jing his condolences. When Chen subsequently demonstrates Great Accomplishment in the Fierce Tiger Stance at Wang's home, Wang reacts with delighted laughter, setting the stage for their departure from Shuang'an Town. 20 21

Journey to Green Mountain City

Recognizing that Chen Jing's talent should not remain buried in Shuang'an Town, Wang Chong fulfills both his own promise and Butcher Zhang's wish by taking Chen to Green Mountain City. 21

He chooses to travel with White Horse Pharmacy's caravan because its identity is verifiable and a larger group offers better odds against the widespread bandit threat. He uses the occasion to teach Chen Jing the importance of practical judgment and human relations outside their hometown. 21 22

When Clear Wind Stronghold ambushes their caravan, he leads Chen through the encirclement, directs their defensive stand on high ground, and guides their escape through the mountains. 22 23

During the escape, Wang Chong intervenes to protect an injured escort from pursuing bandits. He is nearly killed after falling for the stronger bandit's feint, but Chen Jing once again saves him. 24 25

Despite his injuries, Wang Chong leads Chen Jing, Bai Zhixing, and the injured escort safely through the mountains and into Green Mountain City. 26

At Lianshan Martial Arts Hall, he calls upon Cheng Lianshan's old comradeship and secures Chen Jing an opportunity to become Cheng's disciple. 27 28

Wang emphasizes that Chen achieved Great Accomplishment despite poverty, without medicinal baths or Blood-Replenishing Powder, and with only two Blood-Qi Pills. The hall's border-army martial tradition also allows Chen to continue developing from the Fierce Tiger Stance rather than changing disciplines. 27

After Chen's acceptance as Cheng's seventh personal disciple, Wang suffers a coughing fit that exposes the seriousness of his injuries. Cheng sends Cheng Qingshi to fetch a physician and invites Wang to stay and recover. By the welcoming dinner, Wang looks considerably better after receiving a medicinal plaster and prescribed herbal treatment, though the physician still requires ten days to a fortnight of rest. 28 29

Farewell

Still recovering from injuries suffered during the journey, Wang Chong refuses prolonged rest and returns to Shuang'an Town, leaving Chen Jing in Cheng Lianshan's care. He tells Chen to study properly and not disgrace either Shuang'an Town or Butcher Zhang. 32

His decision comes after three days in Green Mountain City. Concerned about the town, he argues that a joint sweep by the county authorities and Six Gates has temporarily made the route home especially safe. Cheng reluctantly agrees, provides a blue roan horse, dry rations, and wound salve, and tells him to write upon reaching home. At the city gate, Wang also asks Chen to return to Shuang'an Town when he has time. 32

Later Legacy

Wang Chong's decision to bring Chen Jing to Cheng Lianshan establishes the path that allows Chen to enter Lianshan Martial Arts Hall and begin his rise in the martial world. Years later, Chen continues to remember Shuang'an Town and visits Wang Chong's home when passing through the area. 290 292

The visit occurs after Chen volunteers to suppress bandits in the north and kills two remnants of Wind and Snow Pavilion. He returns to Shuang'an Town, tends Butcher Zhang's grave, and visits Wang's home before leaving for Green Mountain City that same day. 290

When Chen later presents Cheng Lianshan with the official patent for establishing a sect, Cheng reflects that the plain country boy who originally arrived with Wang Chong has completely changed the course of his life. Wang's sponsorship thus has lasting consequences not only for Chen, but also for his former centurion and the martial hall. 292
