Wang Chong served for more than ten years in the border army, where Cheng Lianshan was his centurion. His military service left him with extensive battlefield experience, but his martial training later stagnated at a bottleneck; he considers his age and condition poor prospects for further progress. 19 27

By the time of the roving-bandit crisis, he leads Shuang'an Town's militia. He trains recruits in the Fierce Tiger Stance, spear and staff fundamentals, and treats those on the drill ground as soldiers under his command. 5 6

During the attack on Creek River Village, Wang Chong leads the militia in repelling and pursuing the bandits, then arranges for the displaced survivors to shelter in Shuang'an Town. Frustrated by the county yamen's inaction, he considers personally confronting the county magistrate over the unchecked bandit threat. 10 11

A seasoned soldier, he prioritizes survival and tactical judgment over empty heroics. During the Clear Wind Stronghold ambush, he breaks out with Chen Jing instead of remaining with the doomed caravan, selects defensible terrain to eliminate pursuers, and teaches Chen Jing how to evade detection. 22 23

Despite his practical outlook, Wang Chong refuses to abandon people when he sees a viable chance to save them. During the nighttime escape through the mountains, he intervenes against two bandits pursuing an injured escort rather than leaving the man to die. 24

Wang Chong introduces Chen Jing and other recruits to the Fierce Tiger Stance, then adds spear and staff drills to build a usable town militia. 5 6

As bandit activity escalates, he transforms Shuang'an Town's defenses through expanded training, improvised weapons, fortifications, and recruitment. 12

Defense of Creek River Village

Wang Chong leads militia members into Creek River Village to fight the roving bandits attacking it. After the battle, he continues searching the village for remaining enemies while entrusting the injured Chen Jing with guarding Butcher Zhang. 10

Though the militia drives away the attackers, the village suffers severe losses. Wang Chong arranges for its survivors to be taken to Shuang'an Town and becomes increasingly angered by the county yamen's failure to address the bandit crisis. 11

Six Gates' Night Raid

When Li Dingfang requests elite local support, Wang Chong carefully selects experienced militiamen and recruits Chen Jing due to his unusually rapid progress, combat experience, and steadiness under pressure. 13

He fights in the raid alongside Six Gates and Chen Jing. During the battle, Chen Jing intercepts a Ghost-Head Blade wielder and saves Wang Chong from a lethal flank attack. 15

Afterward, Wang Chong returns to town, informs the families of fallen volunteers, and ensures compensation is issued. 16

Rewarding Chen Jing

Wang Chong distributes the imperial rewards for suppressing bandits: twenty taels of silver and a Blood-Qi Pill for each qualifying militia member. 17

He later gives Chen Jing his own Blood-Qi Pill, explaining that it would be wasted on his stalled cultivation but could help a talented youth advance. 18 19

Journey to Green Mountain City

Recognizing that Chen Jing's talent should not remain buried in Shuang'an Town, Wang Chong fulfills both his own promise and Butcher Zhang's wish by taking Chen to Green Mountain City. 21

He chooses to travel with White Horse Pharmacy's caravan because its identity is verifiable and a larger group offers better odds against the widespread bandit threat. He uses the occasion to teach Chen Jing the importance of practical judgment and human relations outside their hometown. 21 22

When Clear Wind Stronghold ambushes their caravan, he leads Chen through the encirclement, directs their defensive stand on high ground, and guides their escape through the mountains. 22 23

During the escape, Wang Chong intervenes to protect an injured escort from pursuing bandits. He is nearly killed after falling for the stronger bandit's feint, but Chen Jing once again saves him. 24 25

Despite his injuries, Wang Chong leads Chen Jing, Bai Zhixing, and the injured escort safely through the mountains and into Green Mountain City. 26

At Lianshan Martial Arts Hall, he calls upon Cheng Lianshan's old comradeship and secures Chen Jing an opportunity to become Cheng's disciple. 27 28

Farewell

Still recovering from injuries suffered during the journey, Wang Chong refuses prolonged rest and returns to Shuang'an Town, leaving Chen Jing in Cheng Lianshan's care. He tells Chen to study properly and not disgrace either Shuang'an Town or Butcher Zhang. 32
