Background / History

Piccolo initially joins Sun Wukong against Raditz in the Western Wasteland. Raditz overwhelms them, vaporizing Piccolo’s left arm, but Piccolo devises their strategy: Wukong distracts Raditz while he charges the Special Beam Cannon. The attack grazes Raditz’s shoulder and pierces his armor, proving lethal if it had struck directly. 2

After Li Feng kills Raditz, Piccolo remains outwardly hostile but thanks him. When warned that stronger Saiyans will arrive in a year, he reluctantly agrees to train Gohan, partly because Li Feng had saved his life. 4 6

During the Saiyan conflict, Piccolo recognizes the overwhelming gulf between himself and Li Feng. He later commits to accompanying the group to Namek, both to seek its Dragon Balls and to learn about his own origins. 11 15

On Namek, Piccolo feels an immediate warmth and familiarity toward the planet. The Grand Elder identifies him as connected to a former Namekian and unlocks his potential, raising his battle power to 100,000. 21

Following the Tree of Might crisis, Piccolo protects Gohan from Turles, taking an attack to his back rather than allowing Gohan to be harmed. 17

Before Cooler’s invasion of Earth, Piccolo trains Gohan, then travels to Namek at the Grand Elder’s request. He fuses with Nail, takes Dende to Earth, and becomes significantly stronger. When Cooler brutalizes Gohan, Piccolo intervenes and takes responsibility for the battle. 40

Appearance

Piccolo is a green-skinned Namekian with antennae. He commonly appears in a white cape, battle robe, and hat, which he removes before fighting Cooler. 2 17 40

Personality

Piccolo is proud, guarded, and highly resistant to admitting inferiority. Seeing Li Feng’s strength during the fight with Vegeta leaves him unwillingly forced to accept the vast difference between them. 11

Despite his cold manner, Piccolo is deeply protective of Gohan. He accepts the burden of training him, shields him from Turles, praises him after his losing battle against Cooler, and repeatedly places himself between Gohan and lethal danger. 6 17 39 41

He is also a calculated fighter. Rather than relying only on raw force, Piccolo uses feints, concealed charging time, obscured vision, and carefully prepared attacks to create openings against stronger opponents. 2 40 41
