Background / History
Wukong and Piccolo confront Raditz after the Saiyan arrives on Earth. Though Raditz initially overwhelms them, Wukong continues attacking to create an opening for Piccolo's Special Beam Cannon. He later grabs Raditz's tail to save Piccolo, but releases him after being swayed by Raditz's plea; Raditz immediately resumes his attack. 2
Li Feng intervenes and saves Wukong, Gohan, and Piccolo. After a Senzu Bean heals Wukong's severe injuries, his Saiyan physiology raises his combat power to 1,000. Li Feng then directs him to seek training on King Kai's Planet in preparation for stronger Saiyans expected to attack Earth. 4 6
Wukong trains intensely under this guidance and becomes substantially stronger. His friendly rivalry with Li Feng drives much of this growth, though their spars repeatedly leave him severely injured due to his willingness to exceed his limits. 5 6 14 15
On Namek, the Grand Elder unlocks only a portion of Wukong's enormous latent potential, raising his combat power to 1,500,000. After Li Feng defeats Frieza, Wukong becomes determined to attain Super Saiyan himself. 21 33
Following a year of training on Yardrat, Wukong develops more refined combat judgment and learns Instant Transmission. During Cooler's assault on Earth, Krillin's apparent death triggers Wukong's first Super Saiyan transformation. He later defeats Cooler by combining Super Saiyan with Kaioken to reverse Cooler's Supernova. 36 42 44 47
Personality
Wukong is an optimistic, straightforward battle enthusiast who eagerly seeks stronger opponents and treats difficult fights as opportunities to improve. He repeatedly asks Li Feng to spar and remains excited even after suffering overwhelming defeats. 4 6 13 15
He values fair combat: before challenging Li Feng after the Vegeta battle, he offers him a Senzu Bean so they can fight without Li Feng being fatigued. 13
Despite his love of battle, Wukong is deeply protective of his family and friends. Raditz's threat to Gohan drives him to risk his life, Turles' harm to Gohan and Piccolo enrages him, and Krillin's apparent death awakens his Super Saiyan form. 2 18 44
His kindness can become dangerous softness toward enemies. He releases Raditz after believing his plea, and later spares Cooler after gaining the upper hand because Krillin survives. 2 46
Appearance
Wukong is a Saiyan whose appearance changes dramatically when he transforms into a Super Saiyan. 12 44
- Has black hair and a human-like appearance in his normal state. 12
- Possesses a Saiyan tail; as a child, he could transform into a destructive Great Ape. 12
- As a Super Saiyan, his hair stands upright and turns gold, his pupils turn green, and his ki becomes golden. 44
- When combining Super Saiyan with Kaioken, a dark-red aura overlays his golden aura. 47
Abilities & Skills
Saiyan Physiology
Wukong's Saiyan body becomes significantly stronger after recovering from near-fatal injuries.
- Gains major power increases after Senzu Bean-assisted recoveries following the Raditz battle, his spar with Li Feng, and later battles. 4 6 15 48
- Has extraordinary latent potential; the Grand Elder can unlock only part of it. 21
- Can transform into a Great Ape through Saiyan traits, though his childhood Great Ape state was savage and dangerous. 12
Ki Control
Wukong can manipulate ki for movement, offense, and defensive combat.
- Uses flight to travel and fight in midair. 5 11
- Fires ordinary ki blasts and the rapid-fire Prince Trick barrage. 5
- Senses powerful ki signatures, including Li Feng and Vegeta's auras. 13
- Learns Instant Transmission during his year on Planet Yardrat. 36
Kamehameha
Wukong's signature concentrated energy wave.
- Raises his battle power by gathering ki before firing. 2
- Uses it in beam struggles against Li Feng. 5 14
- Uses repeated Kamehameha waves against Cooler's Supernova. 47
- Cannot initially overpower Cooler's Supernova without stacking Kaioken over Super Saiyan. 47
Afterimage Fist
A high-speed movement technique that leaves a ki-based afterimage to misdirect opponents.
- Wukong developed it through extensive experimentation. 5
- Uses it successfully against Li Feng during their first spar. 5
- Li Feng quickly learns and counters the technique, demonstrating that Wukong's experience initially exceeds Li Feng's. 5
Kaioken
A technique learned through King Kai's training that temporarily multiplies Wukong's power.
- Uses double, triple, quadruple, and five-times Kaioken against Li Feng. 14
- Reaches ten-times Kaioken against Turles and twenty-times Kaioken against Cooler. 18 43
- Greatly burdens his body; five-times Kaioken nearly breaks his body, while twenty-times leaves him unable to stand. 15 43
- Can be stacked over Super Saiyan, doubling his power long enough to overpower Cooler's Supernova. 47
- This Super Saiyan Kaioken state remains unsafe for him to use reliably. 48
Super Saiyan
Wukong's golden-haired Saiyan transformation, first awakened through grief and rage.
- First triggered by Krillin's apparent death at Cooler's hands. 44
- Fully heals his prior injuries upon transforming and restores his lost power. 44
- Defeats Cooler before Cooler reveals a further transformation. 46
- His first successful Super Saiyan transformation motivates Vegeta and confirms his progress toward the legendary Saiyan state. 44
Combat Strategy
Wukong adapts his fighting style according to an opponent's strength.
- Avoids Cooler's strongest attacks rather than confronting superior raw power directly. 42
- Uses small evasive movements and targets weaknesses in an opponent's defense. 42
- Anticipates Cooler's midair movements and converts evasions into counterattacks. 43
