Tang San followed Oscar to the shabby cafeteria for a meal. The food was just as plain as the cafeteria itself, but Tang San adapted to it. He found himself wondering what the Shrek Academy across the street was like.
At that moment, Tang San suddenly remembered that before leaving Notting City, Yu Xiaogang had given him a letter and told him to personally deliver it to the dean once he arrived at Shrek Academy.
He had accidentally forgotten about it when he arrived. Now that he remembered, it was the perfect time to deliver the letter. His teacher might have a close relationship with this dean, and perhaps he could receive some preferential treatment.
Tang San stood and looked at Oscar, who was still drinking porridge.
"Senior Oscar, where is the dean's office?"
Oscar looked up and wiped his mouth with his sleeve.
"You're looking for the dean? Turn right after leaving the cafeteria. The biggest building at the end is his office. He should be there right now, so just go."
Tang San nodded and turned to leave the cafeteria.
Xiao Wu glanced at him, then at the remaining porridge in her bowl. She put down her bowl and followed him out.
"Third Brother, where are you going?"
"To see the dean and deliver a letter."
"Then I'll go with you."
The two crossed the weed-choked courtyard, stepping over the cracks in the stone path, until they reached the largest building.
Tang San knocked on the door.
"Come in."
Flender's voice came from inside.
Tang San pushed the door open and entered, with Xiao Wu following behind him.
The dean's office was not large. It contained a desk, several chairs, and a bookshelf.
Several files and account books were piled on the desk, with an abacus beside them. Flender sat behind the desk, writing something with a pen. When he saw Tang San and Xiao Wu enter, he set down the pen, took off his glasses, and wiped them with a cloth.
"What is it?"
Tang San took the letter from his clothes and handed it over with both hands.
"Dean, my teacher asked me to give this to you."
Flender accepted the letter and glanced at the handwriting on the envelope. His brows twitched slightly.
He opened the envelope, pulled out the letter inside, and quickly read through it.
Then his eyes widened slightly.
"You're Grandmaster's disciple?"
Tang San nodded.
"Yes."
Flender studied Tang San again. The eyes behind his glasses turned serious.
He looked Tang San up and down several times, then looked back at the words on the letter. The corners of his mouth slowly curled upward.
"That guy actually took a disciple?"
"His standards are incredibly high. He doesn't think much of ordinary people. If he chose you, then you must have some real ability."
Tang San gave a slight bow.
"My teacher overpraised me."
"Overpraised you?"
Flender laughed.
"If he says you're good, then you're good."
He folded the letter and placed it in a drawer. Then he looked at Tang San, his expression turning solemn.
"Since you're Yu Xiaogang's disciple, I won't beat around the bush. Your teacher's greatest wish in life is to prove that his theories are correct. Now that he has placed that burden on you, study hard and train hard."
"Do not disappoint your teacher's expectations."
Tang San nodded earnestly.
"I won't."
Flender leaned back in his chair and tapped the desk twice with his fingers.
"That's enough. I've received the letter. Go back and rest well. Tonight's training won't be easy."
Tang San turned toward the door, but just as his hand rested on the handle, he suddenly stopped.
Flender looked at his back.
"Is there anything else?"
Tang San fell silent for a moment before slowly turning around to face Flender.
An unreadable emotion lingered in his eyes.
"Dean, what do you think of the Shrek Academy across the street...?"
Flender's brows lifted slightly. The room suddenly fell quiet.
Tang San did not look away. He was waiting for Flender's answer.
He did not believe Flender knew nothing about the academy across the street. Zhao Wuji had been beaten in the street yesterday, and the other side had been standing right across from them. Everyone on the entire street had seen it.
As the dean of Shrek Academy, Flender could not possibly have received no information at all.
Flender looked at Tang San in silence for several seconds, then let out a soft sigh.
"Of course I know."
"That academy across the street is clearly targeting us, from its name to its recruitment. I know about Zhao Wuji getting beaten yesterday too."
Tang San frowned.
"Then you..."
"Now isn't the time to make a move."
Flender interrupted him, his tone calm.
"The gap between academies can't be decided by a fight. How well they train their students is the true standard by which an academy should be judged."
"Fighting? That's what street thugs do."
After hearing that, Tang San nodded slightly.
He felt that Flender had a point.
What academies competed in was indeed the students they produced, not which of their teachers could fight better.
Yet he still felt that something unspoken was hidden in Flender's expression.
He was not wrong.
What Flender was thinking at that moment was completely different from what he had said aloud.
I can't exactly tell this kid that I can't beat the people across the street, can I?
Flender gave a bitter laugh inwardly.
He, Flender, was a level seventy-eight Soul Saint, the Four-Eyed Cat Eagle. In terms of Soul Power Level, he was two levels higher than Zhao Wuji.
But in terms of combat strength, he was no match for Zhao Wuji. Even Zhao Wuji had been effortlessly crushed by that blue-haired young man across the street. If he went over there, wouldn't he just be delivering himself on a platter?
The thought made Flender feel a chill of unease.
"Unless..."
A thought surfaced in his mind.
The Golden Iron Triangle gathers once more.
Flender, Yu Xiaogang, Liu Erlong—their Martial Soul Fusion Skill, the Golden Iron Triangle.
If the three of them were together, they would not fear even an Eight-Ring Soul Douluo, much less a Seven-Ring Soul Saint.
But the problem was, how could the three of them possibly gather again so easily?
Flender sighed inwardly and suppressed those thoughts.
After hearing Flender's words, Tang San nodded once more.
"I understand."
Just as he was about to say something else, Flender spoke first.
"You should already understand Shrek Academy's admission standards, right?"
Tang San nodded.
"We only accept monsters, not ordinary people."
"That's right."
Flender tapped the desk twice more with his fingers.
"Our academy only has five people right now. Do you know what that means?"
Tang San thought about it.
"It means concentrated resources?"
"Exactly."
Flender's lips curled up.
"We have few people, so every student receives enough attention and training. Resources are limited. Can dividing them among five people have the same effect as dividing them among dozens?"
He paused, then continued.
"How many students has that academy across the street recruited? At least several dozen, I'd say. With more people, their resources will naturally be spread thinner. And didn't you notice? The Soul Power Levels of those students vary widely. Some are only level thirteen or fourteen. With that kind of aptitude, they wouldn't even qualify to apply to our academy."
"That academy claims it can turn ordinary people into monsters, so it will certainly devote more resources to those weaker students. Otherwise, it won't be easy to cultivate people with poor aptitude."
"But you are different. You are monsters, geniuses. If you entered that academy, it would only waste your talents. Think about it: monsters could have had resources all to themselves, so why should they share them with people of mediocre aptitude?"
After hearing that, Tang San found it very reasonable. He even felt fortunate that he had not joined the Shrek Academy across the street.
Otherwise, he would have had to share resources with others despite his talent, raising the average. That would have been quite unfriendly to him.
"You're right."
Tang San's tone was more relaxed than before.
"I'll go back, adjust my condition, and prepare for tonight's training."
Flender nodded in satisfaction.
"Go on."
Tang San turned around. This time, he did not stop again. He pushed open the door and left the dean's office, with Xiao Wu following behind him. The two headed back along the path they had taken.
Inside the dean's office, Flender leaned back in his chair, removed his glasses, and rubbed his temples.
The composure on his face had vanished, replaced by deep exhaustion and anxiety.
"Xiaogang, Xiaogang."
He muttered softly to himself.
"I've already accepted your disciple, but when will you come? If you could bring your theoretical knowledge here, these little monsters would surely grow much faster, wouldn't they?"
