"Of course!"
Yegor fixed him with his black eyes and exhaled a long stream of smoke. "The Kaster City-State is a city that values freedom. The Secret Investigation Bureau even more so."
What did that have to do with freedom?
Wei En suppressed the overwhelming urge to complain and asked the practical question, "What about the salary?"
"Oh, right. We haven't discussed your salary yet."
Yegor muttered something about it being troublesome, then cleared his throat. "As an employee of the Secret Investigation Bureau, you'll frequently deal with mysterious and bizarre incidents. Your pay will be twenty percent higher than that of other departments."
"During your probationary period, you'll earn 4 Shillings a week. Once you become a qualified Investigator, your weekly pay will rise to 6 Shillings. How does that sound? Satisfied?"
4 Shillings and 6 Shillings?
That was even a little more than Yuan had told him. Not bad...
Wait!
Investigator?
Was that the standard title for employees of the Mysterious Incident Investigation Department?
It sounded imposing!
Wei En nodded. "Minister Yegor, I'm very satisfied. This salary will improve my life."
"Everyone thinks so." Yegor nodded noncommittally and pointed at the Parchment. "Can we sign the employment contract now?"
"Absolutely!"
Wei En picked up the Parchment and gave it a cursory glance. After making sure to confirm the salary, he signed his name.
"Very good."
Yegor took the application form, casually stuffed it into a pile of documents, then stood and extended a hand. "Welcome aboard. I'm Yegor Payne, Minister of the Logistics Department of the Kaster City-State Secret Investigation Bureau."
Wei En shook his hand. "The honor is mine as well."
"Turn right when you leave and go to Investigation Division One to find Lacy. She'll take you to collect your equipment."
Yegor's puffed-up chest deflated as he leaned back in his chair again. "I look forward to your performance, Wei En."
That tone didn't sound like you were looking forward to anything at all.
"Goodbye, Minister Yegor."
With that, Wei En turned and left the office.
If he stayed any longer, he was afraid he would tear up the contract he had just signed.
Could a Logistics Department run by a Minister like that really be reliable?
After he left, Yegor propped his feet back up on the desk, picked up a newspaper, and muttered to himself:
"I smelled that Ghost stench of a wizard who toys with life and death... But who cares? As long as he's an extraordinary profession, the doors of the Logistics Investigation Department will always be open to him!"
After leaving the office, Wei En arrived at a room at the end of the corridor. From the worn plaque outside, he could barely make out the words Investigation Division One.
Ding-ding.
He pressed the doorbell.
Who knew why a household item like a doorbell would exist in a place like the Secret Investigation Bureau?
"The door's unlocked. Come in."
At the sound of that voice, Wei En raised an eyebrow. A woman?
But why did her tone sound just like Yegor's earlier?
Just as lazy!
With that thought, he pushed open the door. His heightened senses immediately put him on guard.
A dangerous feeling? Killing intent!
"Hey, Rogeret, put away that killing intent. You're scaring our new colleague."
A tall woman—well, a woman with very well-developed pectoral muscles—stood up and cursed toward the interior of the room.
How should he describe her appearance... Well, upon seeing her figure, the first thing that flashed through Wei En's mind was the word cow. She bore a burden of considerable weight.
Her looks were equally fiery. She had a head of brown curls and very fair skin, a rare sight in a coastal place like the Kaster City-State.
Her features were exquisite: large eyes, equally brown irises, a high nose bridge, and sensual lips.
She truly was a very beautiful woman. Well, and also a very fierce one.
"Sorry, Lacy. I just got back from the harbor..."
In the innermost corner of the room, a neatly dressed young man toyed with a long-barreled Firearm, his face gloomy, as though someone owed him tens of millions and refused to pay.
The "lady" named Lacy continued cursing. "If there's a next time, I'll crush your balls! But you also..."
She paused and did not continue.
Instead, she turned to look at Wei En by the door. After sizing him up a few times, she whistled in admiration. "Yegor did well this time. He tricked a gentleman into joining us."
Tricked?!
Wei En opened his mouth. He suddenly felt that listening to Yuan's advice and joining the Secret Investigation Bureau had been a mistake.
It was hard for him to believe the Secret Investigation Bureau was like this.
An unreliable Alders Minister, a fierce woman who looked very ladylike, and a gloomy young man who was terrifying just to look at...
Was this really the legendary Mysterious Incident Investigation Department responsible for safeguarding the city-state?
"...Miss Lacy?"
"Let me guess. That bastard Yegor sent you to me to collect your equipment?"
Wei En nodded. He did not actually think there was anything wrong with applying the word bastard to Yegor.
"I knew it!" A smile appeared on Lacy's face. "I knew he highly valued my ability to lead a team! What's your name?"
"Wei En Loft!"
"Wei En. Doesn't sound very fierce..."
Lacy muttered, then extended her hand with a broad smile. "Anyway, welcome aboard. I'm Lacy Genesis Montoya, an Investigator of Investigation Division One."
Wei En hesitated before lightly shaking her hand.
He somehow felt that this fierce "lady" might grab his hand and fling him across the room.
"The one inside is Rogeret Guy... There are also two other Investigators catching rats in the Slums. You'll see them by tomorrow at the latest."
Lacy spoke incredibly fast, like a machine gun.
Before Wei En could say anything, she picked up the uniform from the desk and put it on. Once it concealed the grandeur of her chest and her six-pack abs, she said:
"Come on. While those bastards from the Property Management Department are still at work, let's go collect your equipment."
"Mm, thank you."
Wei En followed her out of the office and only then realized that Lacy was even taller than he was.
"No need to be polite. Once you get used to working here, you'll understand that we don't need all that fancy language between us."
Did that mean he would become this... individualistic too?
Wei En thought so, though it made joining the Secret Investigation Bureau seem even more ill-considered...
"Wei En, what do you think of the Secret Investigation Bureau?"
"You want the truth?"
"Of course." Lacy smiled at him. "Looks like you've discovered that our Logistics Department is a very interesting place."
"I haven't discovered that," Wei En said honestly. "I just suddenly regret coming here for the interview."
"Ah, that..."
Lacy was speechless. Seeing the serious look on his face, she realized she needed to do something to salvage this colleague she had worked so hard to trick into joining.
"Wei En."
Using her height and long legs to her advantage, Lacy hooked an arm around his head and pressed him against her chest. "Trust me. Once you get to know this place, you'll definitely come to love it here!"
This...
Wei En did not know whether he would like it here in the future.
But he knew that if he did not do something soon, he was going to suffocate!
Before you continue
