Background / History

Uchiha Clan Massacre

During the Uchiha clan massacre, Kakashi arrives in ANBU uniform and mask to confront the masked attacker calling himself “Madara.” He orders Duanmu to escape with the wounded Uchiha Izumi while he holds the enemy back using Chidori and his Sharingan. Though clearly outmatched in direct clashes, Kakashi continues fighting and evading the attacker’s lethal strikes. 13

Exhausted by the battle and the strain of the Sharingan, Kakashi reports the following morning that Izumi survived. He later firmly confirms to Danzō that he found her badly wounded in the eastern drainage tunnel, refusing to retreat under Danzō’s pressure. 14 15

Formation of Team 7

Hiruzen Sarutobi assigns Duanmu, Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura to Kakashi’s Team 7. Kakashi subjects them to the bell-grabbing test, deliberately arriving late and enforcing rules intended to expose their patience, discipline, and willingness to cooperate. 18 20

He easily defeats Sasuke and Naruto when they act alone, but acknowledges the team once they coordinate to rescue Sasuke and create an opening against him. Land of Waves Mission

Kakashi recommends Team 7 for a C-rank escort mission to the Land of Waves. When Tazuna reveals that the mission involves Gatō and likely exceeds its assigned rank, Kakashi chooses to continue rather than abandon the bridge builder. 25 27

He protects Tazuna against Zabuza Momochi and battles the rogue swordsman with copied Water Release techniques, Shadow Clones, Chidori, and the Sharingan. Zabuza eventually imprisons him in Water Prison, forcing Team 7 to overcome their fear and free him. 28 30

Kakashi later sees through the suspicious circumstances of Haku’s apparent execution of Zabuza. During the final battle, he summons the Ninja Hounds to locate and restrain Zabuza, then is prevented from striking Haku with Chidori when Duanmu teleports Haku away. 31 36
