Background and History

Raya's son was captured with his sister after Raya left the Red Ribbon Army. Dr. Gero used the siblings as test subjects, erased most of their memories, replaced the name Lapis with Android 17, and implanted an order to hunt Son Goku. Researchers later added Kashius to the androids' kill list 139 155 190 199 319.

When Android 18 broke out of containment, Android 17 covered her with a blanket and killed laboratory staff who had seen her exposed. He followed her out of the base despite disagreeing with her wish to find Kashius. The siblings also fought the android sent to retrieve them, while Android 17 killed Dangya, the Red Ribbon official who had helped capture them 191 192 193 195 197.

Dr. Gero recaptured the siblings and continued modifying them, repeatedly erasing their memories. Years later, Raya infiltrated Gero's base and freed them from stasis. Android 17 initially questioned Raya's claim to be their father, but began trusting him after hearing their history and recognizing Lapis as a name buried in his memory 215 265 313 314 319.

Android 17 is described as a handsome young man with sharp eyes. He often maintains an expressionless face 314 412 740 771.

Personality

Android 17 is fiercely protective of Android 18, even when her attachment to Kashius brings the siblings into conflict. He follows her despite his objections and, at one point, delays acting against Kashius because hurting him would upset her 193 196 197.

He can be cold and ruthless toward enemies: he kills Red Ribbon personnel during the siblings' escape and later pursues fleeing alien intruders. Around family, he also shows a teasing side, particularly toward Kashius after regaining his memories 195 411 413.

Modified-human physiology

Dr. Gero's modifications give Android 17 power without turning his body into a largely mechanical one 193 324.

• His ki is scientifically concealed, making him difficult to locate by sensing it 202.
