Key Plot Points and Events

  • Lucien and Liuguang arrive over the Atlantic Ocean on an Auspicious Cloud, above the Puerto Rico Trench.
  • Following directions from Vinda, Lucien descends to the ocean floor to locate a hidden magical vault containing books once collected by the Acolytes.
  • Using water magic, Lucien parts the sea and creates an air-filled sphere around himself and Liuguang, allowing them to travel safely into the depths.
  • The scene shifts to an abandoned mining settlement in southern Wales, which secretly serves as Britain’s largest werewolf camp.
  • Wald returns to the camp and is summoned to a meeting attended by dozens of werewolves.
  • The camp is dominated by Fenrir Greyback, whose wanted poster—carrying a 3,000-Galleon bounty—is displayed prominently among other posters.
  • The werewolves report that Aurors have been investigating the outskirts of the mining area. Fenrir reveals that they have prepared an ambush and are waiting for the “hunters” to fall into their trap.
  • Wald presents Fenrir with a potion purchased in Knockturn Alley: an allegedly improved Wolfsbane Potion. The chapter ends as the entire group focuses on the bottle.

Character Developments

  • Lucien demonstrates confidence and control over elemental magic, effortlessly manipulating seawater to reach the hidden underwater vault.
  • Liuguang accompanies Lucien as his trusted beast companion, relying on him for protection during the descent.
  • Wald appears nervous and submissive around Fenrir. His discomfort suggests fear of his leader and possibly uncertainty about the potion he has acquired.
  • Fenrir Greyback is established as a brutal, commanding, and predatory leader. He enjoys the prospect of hunting Aurors and maintains absolute authority over the werewolf camp.

Significant Themes

  • Secrecy and concealment: Both the underwater vault and the hidden werewolf camp are difficult to locate, emphasizing the importance of secrecy in the magical world.
  • Predator versus prey: Fenrir views the Aurors as hunters, but intends to reverse the roles by luring them into an ambush.
  • Power and intimidation: Fenrir’s appearance, reputation, bounty, and control over the camp establish fear as the basis of his authority.
  • Dangerous experimentation and survival: The improved Wolfsbane Potion may offer werewolves greater control over their condition, but its presence also raises questions about its reliability and intended use.

Ch. 419Price

Chapter Summary: “Price”

Key Plot Points and Events

  • At the werewolf camp, Fenrir examines a bottle of an improved Wolfsbane Potion, while the gathered werewolves react with skepticism, curiosity, or fear.
  • Wald reveals that the potion costs only fifteen Sickles—dramatically cheaper than the original Wolfsbane Potion, which is expensive enough to equal a wizarding family’s monthly living costs.
  • The low price raises hope among the infected werewolf wizards, who might now be able to survive full moons safely and potentially return to ordinary wizarding society.
  • Fenrir deliberately destroys the potion without testing it. He fears that, if it works, his followers will abandon the camp and regain normal lives, weakening his control over them.
  • He orders Garm and Wald to attack Lucien’s Muggle family, apparently as retaliation for developing or distributing the potion.
  • Fenrir explains his desire to expand the werewolf population and provoke widespread chaos, believing war and disorder would allow werewolves to gain power and social influence.
  • Wald obeys despite his private objections, recognizing that resisting Fenrir is nearly impossible.

Character Developments

  • Fenrir Greyback is shown as a calculating, cruel authoritarian. He values fear and violence over the welfare of werewolves and intentionally suppresses any possibility of their liberation. His ambition extends beyond survival: he wants a large-scale breakdown of society in which werewolves can become a feared political force.
  • Wald becomes an increasingly sympathetic figure. Though infected by Fenrir and used for his intelligence and planning skills, he secretly understands the improved potion’s potential and wishes the werewolf wizards could live normally. He is trapped by Fenrir’s supernatural—or psychologically ingrained—control and cannot openly resist.
  • Garm, Fenrir’s similarly brutal brother, eagerly accepts the order to attack Lucien’s family. His cruel enthusiasm reinforces the violent culture Fenrir has created.
  • The other werewolves reveal mixed feelings: some distrust the potion, while others quietly hope it may offer them freedom.

Significant Themes

  • Hope versus oppression: The affordable potion represents a realistic chance for werewolves to regain control of their lives, while Fenrir destroys that hope to preserve his authority.
  • Control through fear: Fenrir rules not through loyalty but through violence, intimidation, and a blood-and-fear bond that compels infected werewolves to obey him.
  • The cost of prejudice: Because wizarding society excludes werewolves and makes treatment unaffordable, many are left vulnerable to leaders like Fenrir.
  • Freedom and identity: Infected werewolf wizards are caught between their former identities as ordinary members of wizarding society and their forced existence within Fenrir’s camp.
  • Power through chaos: Fenrir believes social collapse and war are necessary for werewolves to gain status, revealing his ideology of expansion and destruction.
  • Moral conflict within oppressed groups: Wald recognizes that attacking Lucien’s innocent Muggle family will worsen the werewolves’ situation, but the more violent natural-born werewolves ignore such consequences.

Character Interactions

  • Fenrir interrogates Wald about the potion’s price, using his silence and intimidating presence to control the room.
  • He crushes the bottle in front of the werewolves, communicating both contempt for the potion and his determination to prevent their hope.
  • Fenrir threatens Lucien indirectly by targeting his Muggle family, then assigns Garm to carry out the attack.
  • Wald is ordered to accompany Garm, despite his reluctance. His submissive response demonstrates Fenrir’s power over him.
  • Garm’s eager agreement contrasts with Wald’s fear and moral hesitation, highlighting the divide between Fenrir’s loyal enforcers and the infected werewolf wizards who secretly desire escape.

Ch. 420Attack

Chapter Summary: “Attack”

Plot and events

Wald and Garm observe Grafton Manor at night, intending to attack the target assigned by their leader. Garm discovers that only Muggles are inside and becomes excited by the possibility of infecting or harming Lucien Grafton, a celebrated young wizard and Order of Merlin recipient. Wald objects, reminding him that Lucien is not their target and implicitly criticizing Garm’s arrogance. Garm ignores him and charges into the manor, forcing Wald to follow.
Once inside, the pair race through the manor’s seemingly endless corridors while tracking their quarry by scent. Wald realizes something is wrong: the corridors appear to loop, and Garm’s usually reliable sense of smell has failed. Wald notices a silver-white suit of medieval armor. When he looks back at it, its chest glows red and strange patterns spread across its body. The armor abruptly vanishes. Before Wald can warn Garm, hot blood splashes across his face, ending the chapter on a sudden cliffhanger.

Character development

  • Garm is shown as reckless, sadistic, arrogant, and driven by personal impulses rather than orders. He is fascinated by the idea of corrupting or humiliating Lucien and threatens a Muggle woman for his own amusement. His temper is volatile, and his physical transformation—lengthening fangs, coarse hair, and increasingly bestial features—emphasizes his loss of humanity.
  • Wald acts as the more disciplined and cautious member of the pair. He understands the mission’s limits, recognizes Garm’s foolishness, and appears to have been assigned partly to control him. His confidence begins to weaken when he realizes the manor is abnormal and that they may be walking into a trap.

Themes

The chapter contrasts discipline with uncontrolled brutality and highlights the danger of disregarding orders. It also emphasizes the tension between human intelligence and animalistic instinct, particularly through Garm’s werewolf-like behavior. The manor’s distorted corridors and animated armor introduce themes of supernatural deception, entrapment, and hidden defenses. Garm’s desire to ruin Lucien also reflects the cruelty of envy and the symbolic destruction of a promising reputation.

Character interactions

Wald repeatedly tries to restrain Garm and remind him of their leader’s instructions, but Garm interprets this as an insult and reacts aggressively. Their relationship is therefore defined by mistrust and imbalance: Wald serves as a reluctant supervisor, while Garm resents being controlled. Their forced cooperation continues even after Garm recklessly attacks the manor, with Wald following to prevent the situation from worsening.
