Background / History

Hidden Moon Sect Deacon

Rong Ling first confronts Xu Yuan and Bi Qiong after their breakthrough from the mining district. She had secretly intended to exploit Bi Qiong's mining efforts, then use Bi Qiong's death to frame the district supervisor and install her own people. Their survival ruins this plan, but Rong Ling lets them proceed to disciple registration after taking Bi Qiong's hidden bundle of Jade Marrow Crystals. 14

She presents herself as unusually dependable by Hidden Moon Sect standards, while making clear that a wrong answer could have cost Xu Yuan and Bi Qiong their lives. 14

Yaksha Incident and Xu Yuan's Patronage

Rong Ling summons Xu Yuan into the deep mountains with an iron token, where he finds her blinded, mutilated, and restrained in battle with a drought-ghoul yaksha. The yaksha had been lured beyond the sect by Rong Ling's elder sister and intended to transform her into a yaksha. 24 25

She orders Xu Yuan to use her Demon-Suppressing Golden Needle against the creature. After he kills it, Rong Ling devours much of its body, regenerates her severed arm, restores her condition, and loosens her cultivation bottleneck. She rewards Xu Yuan with an engraved Rong token and permits him to take the remaining valuables from Yaksha Cave. 25 26

Rong Ling subsequently uses her name and token to shield Xu Yuan from Zhang Chao's harassment, sends him to represent her at a recruitment assembly, and leaves him forty low-grade spirit stones after reclaiming the larger share of the assembly's gains. 27 29 31

Lost Soul Cave

When Xu Yuan seeks Merit without leaving the sect, Rong Ling arranges for him to guard Lost Soul Cave. She provides two hundred low-grade spirit stones, a mission token, and the Heart Sutra of Building a Cottage by the Plain Moon River. 48 49

The posting is in fact a dangerous punishment assignment: cultivators normally last only a month in the cave's lethal conditions. Xu Yuan later learns this after entering, deepening his resentment toward Rong Ling despite the resources and cultivation gains the assignment ultimately gives him. 49 50

Soul-Swaying Valley

Rong Ling later meets Xu Yuan as a potential collaborator rather than a disposable subordinate. She explains the risks of Killing Intent and Foundation Establishment, then offers him a future opportunity connected to Soul-Swaying Valley. 83

Inside Soul-Swaying Valley, she joins Xu Yuan and Zhao Sheng in seeking an Earth Sha Spring and the Earth Baleful Spirit Ghosts guarding it. She assigns Xu Yuan the dangerous task of luring out the ghosts, while she and Zhao Sheng establish the Sunflame Grand Formation. 99 100

After the operation succeeds, Rong Ling murders Zhao Sheng when he attempts to bargain for one of the captured spirit ghosts. She gives Xu Yuan the remaining ghost and Zhao Sheng's storage pouch; Xu Yuan accepts only the ghost, and the two part with neither willing to turn their back on the other. 101

Sect Leader's Banquet

At the Hidden Moon Sect Leader's banquet, Rong Ling silently contacts Xu Yuan after recognizing that he remains conscious. She publicly exposes Sect Master Zhang Chuji's true nature by asking how he had consumed his own master a century earlier. The enraged sect master impales and carries her away with his tongue, exposing himself as a giant toad demon and triggering the disciples' flight. 115

Rong Ling later appears in Jade Dragon City as Bi Qiong's master. She initially mistakes Xu Yuan for Bi Qiong's romantic interest, then attacks him after sensing that he is concealing his cultivation. 142

Rong Ling is a tall, slender woman with a cool, lovely face. She is often associated with veils, immaculate Daoist robes, shadows, and black-crow incarnations with crimson eyes. 14 24 29

Rong Ling is calculating, ambitious, and exceptionally ruthless. She is willing to manipulate subordinates, exploit deaths for political advantage, and eliminate partners who become inconvenient. Her initial plan for Bi Qiong and the mining supervisor, the Lost Soul Cave assignment, and Zhao Sheng's murder all reflect her pragmatism. 14 49 101

Despite this, she consistently honors arrangements that benefit her long-term interests. She rewards Xu Yuan after the yaksha incident, provides resources and protection, warns him about Zhu Yan's likely retaliation, and shares valuable information about late-stage Qi Refining and Foundation Establishment. 25 31 47 83

As Xu Yuan grows stronger, Rong Ling's treatment of him shifts from command and manipulation to guarded respect. By Soul-Swaying Valley, she is visibly surprised by his strength and recognizes that he is no longer easy to control. 90 101
