Background / History
Joanna is Vivian's older sister. She attacks the Half-Horn City garrison to obtain the horn of Vivian's Fear Illusion Demon, which she needs to forge the final piece of her magical defensive equipment. Her assault incapacitates the garrison’s defenders, and she confronts Vivian with open contempt for her sister’s timidity. 27 28
During the confrontation, Vivian teleports herself, Joanna, and Du Wei to Half-Horn Mountain to prevent collateral damage. Joanna defeats Vivian after Vivian expends substantial magic moving the battlefield; however, both sisters’ dragons are drawn into the ensuing disaster, and Joanna’s ice dragon is killed. 28 30 35
Du Wei later finds Joanna unconscious on an iceberg and brings her to shore. Stranded with Du Wei and Vivian on the monster-island, where magic is suppressed, she initially attacks Du Wei but is forced to acknowledge that cooperation is necessary for survival. 34 36
After their failed raft escape and encounter with Chris, Joanna awakens with no memory of the island’s events. Her magic gradually recovers at sea. She helps repel pirates aboard the Black Pearl, then agrees to assist Du Wei for three months out of a debt for saving her life. 42 45
Appearance
Joanna is a tall, striking woman with an ice-like beauty, snow-white silver hair, and a cold, bloodless complexion. Du Wei notes that her appearance closely resembles Semel Chira Roland’s magical phantom. 28
- Bright eyes with a cold, scornful gaze. 28
- White, rune-patterned light armor with decorative openwork designs. 28
- Long white cape. 28
- Often described as resembling ice and snow. 28
- Her resemblance to Semel is greater than ninety percent. 28
Personality
Joanna is proud, aggressive, and impatient, particularly toward weakness. She mocks Vivian’s fearfulness despite Vivian’s powerful magic and initially responds to danger with force rather than restraint. 28
Her hostility softens during the island ordeal. After Du Wei confronts her selfishness and ingratitude, she accepts the need to work with him. She also shows genuine empathy when Vivian refuses to abandon her dragon, having lost her own dragon herself. 36 37
She remains fiercely protective of Vivian, rebuking Du Wei when he stares at her younger sister and standing by his explanation of the pirates’ crimes. 38 43
Abilities & Skills
Dual Cultivation
Joanna follows the same dual path of magic and martial arts as the legendary Aragon, whom she admires. 40
- Combines magecraft with close-quarters combat. 28 35
- Remains capable in battle when anti-magic conditions prevent spellcasting. 35
- Her magical power is initially suppressed on the monster-island and only partially returns after escape. 35 42
Magecraft
Joanna demonstrates powerful magic before becoming stranded.
- Releases a white halo that sends more than a dozen attackers flying unconscious. 28
- Uses wind magic powerful enough to create a violent whirlwind and produce snow in the southern region. 28
- Can fly when her magic is functional; after leaving the island, she manages only a short flight before falling into the sea. 37 42
- Uses wind magic in an attempt to strengthen the raft’s sail, but the island’s suppression prevents it from working. 37
Swordsmanship and Battle Aura
Joanna is a certified Level Six swordswoman. 35
- Uses Battle Aura, an ability associated with intermediate-or-higher warriors. 43
- Defeats a large portion of a pirate crew bare-handed, using one attacker as an improvised weapon. 43
- Her physical strength and combat training make her a serious threat even without her magic. 35 43
Magical Equipment Crafting
Joanna seeks the Fear Illusion Demon’s horn to complete a magical defensive item. 28
- Her armor is magically enhanced and inscribed with runes. 28
- She identifies her jade-green flute as her magic wand. 35
- Her primary weapon is a flute rather than a conventional sword. 28 37
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- White rune-patterned light armor — Magically enhanced armor with hollowed decorative patterns. 28
- White cape — Donated as the sail for the group’s escape raft. 28 37
- Jade-green flute — Her magic wand and usual weapon. 28 35 37
- Ice dragon — Former dragon mount; killed by the monster-island’s creature. 35
Relationships
- Vivian — Younger sister. Joanna is harsh and dismissive of Vivian’s fear, but protects her and understands her grief over losing a dragon. 28 36 38
- Du Wei Roland — Initially antagonistic after he rescues her; becomes a reluctant ally on the island and later assists him because she owes him her life. 35 37 45
- Semel Chira Roland — Joanna bears an uncanny resemblance to Semel’s phantom, though the context does not establish a familial connection. 28 47 48
- Aragon — A legendary dual cultivator whom Joanna admires and whose path influenced her own training. 40
