Background / History

Goku was sent from Planet Vegeta to Earth as an infant under the name Kakarot. A fall from a cliff caused amnesia, leaving his Saiyan bloodline dormant and allowing Son Gohan to raise him on Mount Paozu. After Gohan's death, Goku lived alone for two years, training, hunting, and speaking to tree stumps. 2

At age twelve, he met Talos, another Saiyan who had been sent to Earth on the same day. Goku immediately noticed Talos's tail and immense ki; Talos taught him ki control and brought him to Turtle Hermit House. 1 2 Master Roshi accepted him despite his Saiyan heritage, stressing that Earth was his home and that the Turtle Hermit School judged character rather than bloodline. 3

Goku trained alongside Talos and Krillin under Master Roshi, becoming an official heir of the Turtle Hermit School. He helped pursue Master Roshi when the latter went alone to confront King Piccolo, then supported the effort that sealed Piccolo away. 5 8 9

Years later, Goku survived the Ultra Divine Water to prepare for Raditz's arrival. When Raditz confronted him at The Lookout, Goku rejected his assigned mission to exterminate Earth and affirmed that he was Son Goku, not Kakarot. 12 He subsequently fought alongside the Turtle Hermit School against Vegeta, Frieza, Cell, Majin Buu, Beerus, and opponents from other universes. 13 16 20 26 30

In later life, Goku became a teacher and guardian of the Turtle Hermit School's legacy. He continued sparring with Vegeta, instructed younger disciples through basic forms, and regarded companionship as his greatest achievement. 42 46 47 He died before the events of Chapter 55. 55

Appearance

Goku is a tailed Saiyan who wears the orange Turtle Hermit School uniform through most of his life.

  • As a child, he wears blue cloth clothes and wraps his tail around his waist. 1 2
  • He has a brown Saiyan tail, which remains visible into old age. 2 43
  • In Super Saiyan form, he has golden hair and green eyes. 18
  • In old age, his hair turns white, while his orange gi becomes faded and repeatedly patched. 43 49
  • Even as an elderly man, he retains a straight back and hands hardened by decades of combat and training. 44 49

Personality

Goku is openly curious, enthusiastic about training, and drawn to strong opponents. As a child, he responds to Talos's arrival not with fear but with excitement at the prospect of fighting and learning. 2 He remains notably food-motivated, frequently associating safety and comfort with seafood congee. 3 12

He is fiercely loyal to his teachers and companions. Goku refuses to accept Master Roshi's intended self-sacrifice against King Piccolo and commits himself to ensuring that Roshi does not face the threat alone. 6 Although he learns of his Saiyan origins, he defines himself by his chosen home and relationships rather than by his birth mission. 3 12

In old age, Goku retains his playful rivalry with Vegeta but becomes increasingly reflective about teaching, inheritance, and brotherhood. 43 46
