Background / History

Tom Riddle, later known as Voldemort, was a Slytherin student and the heir of Salazar Slytherin. Fifty years before the Chamber of Secrets incident, he opened the Chamber, caused Moaning Myrtle’s death, and preserved a memory of himself inside a diary 183 186. He was also acquainted with Yalikesa Mephisto, whom he later described as his only sincere friend 183 285.

As Voldemort rose to power, he became one of the three great modern wizarding figures named alongside Dumbledore and Grindelwald, and was remembered as the “second Dark Lord” 11. His reign brought a “darkest decade” to the wizarding world, enforced through Death Eaters, murder, torture, and the Black Mark 1 2 253.

In 1980, he allowed Bellatrix Lestrange to torture Neville Longbottom’s parents into insanity with the Cruciatus Curse 2. In 1981, after Peter Pettigrew revealed the Potters’ location, Voldemort murdered James Potter and attempted to kill infant Harry Potter. Lily Potter’s sacrificial protection caused the Killing Curse to rebound, destroying Voldemort’s body and leaving him as a scattered spirit 2.

After his downfall, Voldemort fled to Albania, possessing small animals—especially snakes—while waiting for loyal followers to find him 2. His absence created over a decade of uneasy peace, while Death Eaters either resisted, fled, or claimed they had acted under the Imperius Curse 2.

A memory of Riddle later reappeared through the diary Horcrux in the Chamber of Secrets. Voldemort returned to a body through an ancient resurrection ritual using bone of the father, flesh of the servant, and blood of the enemy, with Harry transported to Riddle Graveyard by a Portkey 284 286. He summoned the Death Eaters, tested their loyalty, and spoke of rebuilding his dark army with Dementors, giants, and other creatures 284 285.

After resurrection, Voldemort treated Sherlock Mephisto as a rival great wizard. He feared Sherlock’s strength, coveted his spells, and tried to manipulate their shared ties through the Mephisto family and Yalikesa 285 290. He also spread rumors implying that Sherlock had allied with him after Sherlock visited his Irish hideout 291.

Voldemort later appeared in the Ministry of Magic Atrium, tried to kill Harry, and clashed directly with Sherlock. Their duel devastated parts of the Ministry and London, ending with Voldemort publicly confirming his return and declaring war on those who refused to submit 308 309 310.

After Dumbledore’s death, Voldemort freed Grindelwald from Nurmengard and later sent Grindelwald’s wand as a message to the new Minister for Magic, Fumengde Mephisto 315. He also sought the Elder Wand by kidnapping Ollivander and eventually stealing the wand from Dumbledore’s tomb 335 348.

During the final war, Voldemort attacked Hogwarts with Death Eaters, Dementors, Trolls, Acromantulas, Werewolves, Vampires, and Giants 346. Sherlock revealed and targeted his Horcruxes, weakening Voldemort and forcing the final confrontation into a chase for Nagini, his last remaining Horcrux 346 351 352.

Voldemort died after his Horcruxes were destroyed. His soul shattered so completely that Death would not guide him to the Land of the Dead; he could not be reborn, redeemed, or even become a ghost 354.

Voldemort’s appearance changes across time. Before his full physical ruin, he appears as a handsome middle-aged man with gray at the temples 361. After resurrection, he is described as pale, haggard, snake-like, and scarlet-eyed, with a hoarse and unpleasant voice 285 308.

Personality

Voldemort is defined by cruelty, arrogance, and domination. His pleasure in killing is described as indiscriminate: subordinates, civilians, enemies, and passersby are all equally disposable to him 1. He casually disregards the lives of Muggle-borns, dismissing Moaning Myrtle as “some little Mudblood girl” whose name and face he cannot remember 183.

He values loyalty only as obedience. Death Eaters call him “Master,” and he uses the Black Mark to summon and control them 253 269. He punishes fear and failure harshly, torturing Death Eaters who panic before Sherlock even arrives 285.

Voldemort is also ambitious and intellectually curious. He created Horcruxes, sought the Elder Wand, coveted the Book of Sherlock, and showed interest in Homies and soul-based magic as tools for superior immortality 290 335 348. After discussing Sherlock’s Substitute Scarecrow, he admits regret that he chose the wrong path with Horcruxes 290.

Despite his contempt for others, he shows rare traces of attachment. The diary memory speaks with pride about his past, grieves the Basilisk’s destruction, and accepts defeat with calm dignity 185. He also calls Yalikesa Mephisto the only friend he ever treated sincerely 285.
