Background / History
Hogwarts was founded over a thousand years ago by Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin. The founders built the castle far from Muggles during an era when witches and wizards faced persecution, intending to locate magically gifted children and teach them safely. 152
The founders initially worked in harmony, but their views on admissions divided them. Slytherin sought to restrict magical education to children from wholly magical families and rejected Muggle-born students; after a fierce dispute with Gryffindor, he left the school. The four Houses remained as the institution’s central structure. 152 293
The Sorting Hat preserves the founders’ ideals: Gryffindor values bravery, Ravenclaw intelligence, Hufflepuff equality, and Slytherin exceptional ability. A school account further maintains that Slytherin accepts gifted students even when their bloodline is not pure. 75 293
Campus
Castle and Great Hall
Hogwarts is a vast castle of towers and turrets, approached through stone gates and oak front doors. Its Great Hall contains four long House tables beneath an enchanted ceiling that reflects the sky outside, while floating candles illuminate the room. 138 293
During the Triwizard Tournament, the Hall is redecorated with the banners of Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin, as well as a school crest combining a lion, eagle, badger, serpent, and the letter H. 264
Houses
Students are assigned to Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin during the Sorting Ceremony. Their House becomes their home within Hogwarts: students attend lessons, sleep in dormitories, and spend free time with Housemates there. House points are awarded for good conduct and deducted for rule-breaking; the highest-scoring House wins the House Cup. 27
- Gryffindor — represented by a golden lion on red. 264
- Hufflepuff — represented by a black badger on yellow. 264
- Ravenclaw — represented by a bronze eagle on blue. 264
- Slytherin — represented by a silver serpent on green. Its common room lies beneath Hogwarts Lake, with enchanted windows looking onto the lakebed. 29 264
Grounds and Hidden Spaces
- Hogwarts Lake — home to merpeople, who regard the lakebed as their territory rather than Hogwarts property. 279
- Forbidden Forest — inhabited by centaurs, unicorns, Acromantulas, trolls, and other dangerous creatures; Hogwarts does not control it. 279
- Room of Requirement — a concealed meeting place used by the Sherlock Club and Dark Wizard Army for gatherings and training. 301
- Animated statues — the castle contains hundreds, possibly nearly a thousand, statues that can be activated for combat; as inanimate objects, they are unaffected by the Killing Curse. 100
Security
Hogwarts employs protective measures that become increasingly important as Sirius Black and Voldemort threaten the school.
- After Black breaches the castle and vandalizes the Fat Lady portrait, students are gathered in the Great Hall under prefect guard for safety. 212
- Dementors are stationed at Hogwarts under a Ministry arrangement to search for Black, despite the fear they cause among students. 208
- The school conducts inspections of pets and stray animals when rumors spread that Black may be an Animagus. 215
- During the final conflict, Hogwarts is enclosed by a purple magical barrier personally established by Sherlock. Voldemort’s assault shakes the castle and lake but does not immediately break through. 349
- Sherlock’s Magic Sound Commandment later causes the barrier at the school gates to fail, allowing students to attempt joining the fighting outside. 350
Student Life and Activities
Hogwarts Honor Tournament
Sherlock Mephisto proposes the Hogwarts Honor Tournament for the school anniversary, arguing that students should have freedom and enjoyment while appreciating each House’s strengths and strengthening their attachment to Hogwarts. 35
The tournament selects sixty students—fifteen from each House—and assigns specialized roles including commander, strategist, raider, doctor, shooter, and thief. Its objectives emphasize teamwork, counterplay, magical items, and coordinated strategy across the castle grounds. 37 38
Sherlock Club and Dark Wizard Army
The Sherlock Club operates from Slytherin territory and initially admits students who can correctly answer a demanding paper. Powerful spells prevent non-members from entering. 82
Its later gatherings take place in the Room of Requirement. The associated Dark Wizard Army brings together students across House boundaries to study advanced magic, reducing the usual divisions between Houses. 204 301
Triwizard Tournament
Hogwarts hosts the Triwizard Tournament, welcoming delegations from Beauxbatons and Durmstrang. The castle is cleaned and decorated in preparation, while the Goblet of Fire is placed in the Entrance Hall behind an Age Line. 261 264 266
Although many expect Sherlock to represent Hogwarts, the Goblet selects Harry Potter as the school’s Champion. 267
Relationships
- Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin — founders whose differing educational ideals created the four-House system; Slytherin ultimately departed over admissions disputes. 152 293
- Albus Dumbledore — headmaster for much of the story; oversees school events and security, but is dismissed by the Board of Governors during the Chamber crisis. 36 175
- Severus Snape — succeeds Dumbledore as headmaster after Voldemort’s return. 336
- Sherlock Mephisto — influential Slytherin student, creator of the Honor Tournament, organizer of student groups, and later Defence Against the Dark Arts professor under Dumbledore’s will. 35 301 337
- Ministry of Magic — influences Hogwarts security through its deployment of Dementors and its actions against Hagrid during the attacks on Muggles. 175 208
Story Role / Major Arcs
Sherlock’s Enrollment
Sherlock receives his Hogwarts acceptance letter at age eleven despite reported interest from Durmstrang and Beauxbatons. Dumbledore and Fudge intervene to ensure that he attends the British school. 24
He arrives by Hogwarts Express, crosses the lake with the first-years, and is introduced to the school’s House system before joining Slytherin. 26 27 29
Anniversary Tournament
Sherlock’s Honor Tournament turns Hogwarts’ normally quiet anniversary into a major public event supported by all twenty governors and the Daily Prophet. 36 37
Chamber Crisis and Black’s Escape
The Ministry takes Hagrid into custody during attacks on Muggles, while Lucius Malfoy leads the Board of Governors in removing Dumbledore from office. 175
In the following year, Sirius Black’s apparent infiltration of Hogwarts triggers emergency assemblies, heightened inspections, and Dementor patrols. 208 212 215
International Exchange and Triwizard Hosting
Hogwarts students undertake a summer exchange trip to Beauxbatons and Durmstrang before hosting both schools for the Triwizard Tournament. 235 240 247 264
Voldemort’s Return
As Voldemort’s influence spreads, enrollment declines and students no longer consider Hogwarts unquestionably safe. Snape becomes headmaster, while Sherlock returns to expose the Carrow siblings as Death Eaters and takes responsibility for teaching Defence Against the Dark Arts. 336 337
During the war, Hogwarts becomes a fortified target of Voldemort’s forces. Sherlock’s barrier protects the castle until the Magic Sound Commandment disrupts the defenses at its gates and draws students into the wider battle. 349 350
