Background / History

Sukuna was a human sorcerer from roughly a thousand years ago. During the golden age of jujutsu, the era's sorcerers united against him and were decisively defeated, establishing his reputation as the unmatched strongest of his age. Even after his death, his remains endured as indestructible cursed objects known as Sukuna's Fingers. 8

Before his sealing, Sukuna fought a powerful ability user from Divine Xia. He admitted that he fought with everything he had yet could not defeat that opponent; the encounter remained unknown to the wider world, preserving Sukuna's public image as invincible. 119

His fragmented soul survives through his Fingers. Yuji Itadori becomes Sukuna's first vessel after swallowing one, but proves capable of suppressing him. Sukuna later identifies Megumi Fushiguro as a more suitable vessel because of his Ten Shadows Technique and the greater freedom Megumi's body offers him. 6 18 75

Appearance

While inhabiting Yuji, Sukuna manifests black markings across the vessel's body and an oni-like face. His restored combat form is far more monstrous: a two-faced, four-armed demon with a mouth across his abdomen. 6 179 180

  • Black markings deepen across his body after transforming. 180
  • His right facial half becomes covered in a mask-like layer of flesh. 180
  • A grinning mouth opens across his abdomen. 180
  • He manifests two extra arms from his ribs, allowing him to chant and form hand signs at the same time. 180

Personality

Sukuna is cruel, arrogant, and openly delighted by the prospect of slaughter. Upon first manifesting, he celebrates his freedom by seeking humans to kill, treating civilians with contempt. 6

He enjoys humiliating weaker opponents rather than immediately killing them. He toys with Fushiguro, disparages his strength, threatens Yuji's companions, and uses Yuji's removed heart as leverage to keep control of the vessel. 13 16

Despite this cruelty, Sukuna respects exceptional power. He becomes intensely interested in Lin Mu after seeing him withstand his attacks, acknowledges the strength of Divine Xia's practitioners, and accepts Lin Mu's final one-on-one challenge rather than arranging an ambush. 16 119 175

Abilities & Skills

Cursed Energy Manipulation and Slashing Techniques

Sukuna produces invisible slashes with extreme speed, precision, and destructive power. His attacks can cut stone pillars into hundreds of smooth fragments and overwhelm most opponents before they can react. 16 118

  • Can release wide-range invisible slashes or concentrate them into more destructive close-range strikes. 17
  • Uses weakened but numerous slashes as a defensive net, dispersing incoming attacks before they can reach him. 18
  • Can amplify his slashes through chants and hand seals. 180
  • His World-Cutting Slash, developed through Mahoraga's adaptation to Susanoo, is powerful enough to sever communication with every observing crow and black out Jujutsu High's monitors. 182

Domain Expansion: Malevolent Shrine

Sukuna's Domain Expansion creates a crimson shrine surrounded by imagery of corpses and bones. Within it, his slashing techniques gain a sure-hit effect, placing opponents under relentless attacks from every direction. 17

  • Initially fails to break Lin Mu's Skeletal Susanoo despite its sure-hit slashes. 17
  • Can impose a binding vow to focus the domain's destructive power on a single target. 120
  • Can bypass cursed-technique burnout by damaging and restoring the relevant part of his brain with Reverse Cursed Technique. 178

Reverse Cursed Technique and Regeneration

Sukuna possesses extraordinary regenerative ability and dangerous control over his own body. He removes his own heart while inhabiting Yuji and remains alive, using the missing heart as a hostage mechanism against Yuji. 16

  • Rapidly regenerates severe damage to his arms during combat. 119
  • Repairs self-inflicted brain damage to restore access to cursed techniques and deploy Malevolent Shrine again shortly after a previous expansion. 178
  • His willingness to alter his own brain in battle demonstrates both his resilience and recklessness. 178

Ten Shadows Technique

After taking Megumi's body, Sukuna gains access to the Ten Shadows Technique and uses it to support his battle against Lin Mu. 166 175

  • Summons Mahoraga, whose adaptive ability analyzes Susanoo and enables Sukuna's World-Cutting Slash. 175 182
  • Uses Mahoraga defensively, hiding within its shadow to survive Lin Mu's fire tornado. 179
  • Summons a fused shikigami that fights alongside him and Mahoraga in a three-on-one assault. 179 181

Furnace Open

Sukuna uses Furnace Open to challenge Lin Mu to a contest of fire techniques in his restored form. Lin Mu's enhanced Dragon Flame Song Jutsu ultimately overwhelms Sukuna's flames. 121

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Sukuna's Fingers — indestructible cursed objects containing fragments of Sukuna's soul and power. 5 8
  • Mummified body — Sukuna's preserved original body; consuming it restores his peak power. 175
  • Hiten — spear-like cursed tool that enables flight and concentrates or multiplies cursed energy at its tip for piercing attacks. 180 181
  • Kamutoke — vajra-like cursed tool capable of summoning massive lightning strikes; it also prevents one fatal attack. 180 182

Relationships

  • Yuji Itadori — first vessel and jailer; Sukuna repeatedly seeks to seize control but is suppressed by Yuji's will. 6 7
  • Megumi Fushiguro — desired replacement vessel due to his Ten Shadows Technique; Sukuna eventually takes over his body. 18 75 166
  • Lin Mu — principal rival. Sukuna is fascinated by Lin Mu's rapid growth and fights him repeatedly before being killed by him. 16 118 183
  • Uraume — loyal servant who assists Sukuna's escape and mourns him after his death. 166 184
  • Jogo — cursed-spirit associate who awakens Sukuna by feeding Yuji ten Fingers; Sukuna dismisses him as inferior. 117 121
  • Satoru Gojo — modern-era strongest who easily subdues Sukuna's initial manifestation and later observes his final battle with Lin Mu. 6 182
