Background / History

Kaido was originally a World Government genetic-engineering subject. Before Vegapunk took control of the project, scientists implanted him with bloodlines from multiple races; Vegapunk later implanted traits drawn from an unknown number of Zoan Devil Fruits. The project’s stated aim was not simply to create a weapon, but an “energy body” with inexhaustible life force. Its intended purpose remains unknown. 178 264

He eventually escaped the laboratory and reappeared on the seas two years later as captain of the Beasts Pirates. His altered body made him extraordinarily difficult to kill or contain, allowing him to survive repeated defeats, attempted suicides, challenges against other Emperors, and solo assaults on Marine Headquarters. 164 178

Kaido became deeply invested in acquiring Zoan Devil Fruits and building the strongest possible Zoan-user force. His conflict with Zhong Hao began when Zhong Hao stole four Zoan Fruits from him in the West Blue; it escalated after Zhong Hao took another Mythical Zoan Fruit and killed Jack the Drought. 233 236

He is brutally direct when pursuing an objective. He tramples through Dressrosa without regard for civilians, kills Shanks’s subordinate to seize a Devil Fruit container, and attacks allies or rivals alike if they stand between him and a desired prize. 232 236 237

Kaido’s confidence in his durability borders on contempt for danger. He habitually refuses to dodge attacks because he believes nothing can kill him, a belief that ultimately leaves him vulnerable when his stamina is drained. 276 278

Conflict with the Marines

Kaido challenged Marine Headquarters alone while Jack attacked a Heavenly Tribute ship in the Calm Belt, tying down the Admirals and enabling Jack’s operation. 164 165

After Jack’s death, the Marines considered Kaido too dangerous to ignore but lacked a reliable method to kill him. Sengoku disclosed Kaido’s engineered origins to Zhong Hao after Zhong Hao revealed a one-use disintegration technique that might overcome his regeneration. 177 178

Dressrosa Pursuit

After learning Zhong Hao had entered the New World, Kaido reacted with immediate fury and moved to kill him. Doflamingo later summoned him to Dressrosa, where Kaido rampaged through the city in pursuit of Zhong Hao. 228 229 232

Zhong Hao lured Kaido away from Dressrosa, protecting the island while Akainu fought Doflamingo. Zhong Hao managed to cut through Kaido’s waist, but Kaido’s regeneration made a direct victory impossible, forcing Zhong Hao into a day-long escape across the sea. 233 234

Battle for the Titan Form Devil Fruit

Kaido’s pursuit led him into a standoff between Big Mom and Shanks over the Human-Human Fruit, Titan Form. He prioritized obtaining the Mythical Zoan Fruit over killing Zhong Hao and killed one of Shanks’s fish-man subordinates while attempting to seize its container. 236 237

Kaido withstood a combined assault from Zhong Hao, Shanks, and Big Mom, but failed to secure the fruit. Zhong Hao ultimately stole it while Kaido and Big Mom continued fighting. 237 238

Decline of the Beasts Pirates

The chaos caused by Kaido’s clashes with the other Emperors led Whitebeard, Shanks, and Big Mom to jointly suppress the Beasts Pirates and seize much of Kaido’s territory. Kaido retaliated by repeatedly infiltrating their territories, destroying islands, and killing officers in revenge. 256

By this point, only three islands remained under Kaido’s control, guarded by Kaido and his two surviving Calamities. 256

Thunder God Island and Death

Kaido fought Big Mom for five days and five nights over a Road Poneglyph on Thunder God Island. Zhong Hao waited for both Emperors to exhaust themselves before attacking Kaido. 276

Zhong Hao opened Kaido’s neck with Shura, stabbed his eyes, and exploited the blade’s blood groove to prevent rapid healing. Kaido’s stamina was eventually depleted, leaving him unconscious despite his continuing vitality. 277 278

A World Government Door-Door Fruit user attempted to rescue Kaido through a spatial passage. Zhong Hao followed them into the passage and targeted the unconscious Kaido with a one-use Mangekyō Sharingan disintegration attack. Kaido’s headless corpse was later delivered to Marineford, confirming his death. 279 281
