Background / History

In 1494, Roger recovered on Drum Island while suffering from a terminal illness. Though treatment could only stabilize his worsening condition and could not stop the pain, he insisted on departing with Rayleigh and beginning the Roger Pirates’ “final voyage.” 61

During the crew’s journey through the White Sea and Upper Yard, Roger won over Skypiea’s inhabitants with his stories and personally moved to protect his crew when he learned they might be endangered in the Shandian conflict. He ultimately respected Gan Fall’s wish to avoid war, while using Observation Haki to locate Reg’s battle with Scopper Gaban. 95

At Shandora, Roger warned Reg away from the Poneglyph’s dangerous knowledge, then found and cleared the route to the Golden Bell. His illness visibly worsened during the expedition. 98

Golden Lion Shiki later demanded that Roger join his campaign to rule the world. Roger refused outright, valuing the freedom to be a pirate on his own terms over dominion, and the Roger Pirates fought Shiki’s vastly larger Flying Pirate fleet. 166
